Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

So far, on the first day of use, the only negative I have seen is when it updated to Android 7.0 (whatever food name that is); Google took eMail away. The account and messages were preserved, but the eMail app disappeared. It's an account in the Gmail app now, which I don't like (I use IMAP, and hate Gmail). But that has ZERO to do with this brand or model.
Now after a couple of weeks, we like it even better. My wife is just delighted. Seems to have very very good battery life.
PROs (so far):
Bright, clear screen (it's only 1280x800, but looks great)
Snappy performance
Not much bloatware (I removed/disabled 5 or 6 apps)
The fast SD card I installed has excellent performance!
Nice build quality, and very good if not super-premium materials (it's going to be in a case, so what?)
Very fast WiFi (the fastest of any of our handheld devices)
CONs: About three weeks in, we just lamented that the (rear) camera has no flash. We found out by trying to scan a QR code in low light. It was just a blurry blob until I used a flashlight.
I will add this caution: There are several ZenPad 8 models, and evidently they are different sizes. I ordered the wrong case. Be sure to know your model number and order the correct case.
2018-05-09: My wife still loves it and, other than the lack of a camera flash, it works just great!
I believe the 2Gb RAM helps a lot: it can handle some of the more complex web pages quite smoothly, unlike some other entry level tablets I've used. Asus also supports upgrade to Android 7, which is a big plus for me (see below).
The screen is nice if you're okay with 720p:
- resolution is okay for my use. 720p video is nice and clear on the screen. I feel it is more than enough for a screen of such size.
- the black is really black, which I like.
Button placement is only so-so:
- the power and volume buttons are near the middle, rather than closer to one end of the device. I found them inconvenient, e.g., using volume buttons as page up/down is problematic.
SD card slot is somwhat hidden:
it is hidden behind the cover. So if you intend to put in / take out the SD card frequently, this device is not for you. Otherwise, it is fine.
The power cable might be short: it is about 30" long, a tad short for my use cases.
Night time use:
- It comes with a bluelight filter app for night time usage.
- However, the main stumbling block is the white background of notifications, which is very distracting. While I understand it is Android (Marshmallow) demands white / light notification background, I wish their ZenUI would provide a way to customize it.
- There is a partial workaround for some cases: it comes with an (experimental) option to invert the color (found in accessibility) such that notification (and various white background settings, apps) wold have dark background instead. I personally am still experimenting, and am on the fence whether it works well or not.
== Update May 2017 on Android 7==
Asus provides an upgrade to Android 7 (7.0 to be exact), of which I greatly appreciate.
The change I appreciate the most is on the notifications:
1. It becomes more friendly to use at night. Notification (and the quick settings "tiles")'s background is no longer white (glaring at night), but a muted, blurred of the underlying screen.
2. The quick settings widgets (called tiles) can be added / removed more freely. I can finally remove all the unused tiles, reducing clutters.
The new split screen feature is somewhat useful, e.g., reading at one side and taking notes at the other side.Too bad Amazon Kindle's android app does not support split screen.
I received some security updates and while it does not run the latest and greatest Android I think this is the best you can get on a budget tablet today unless you go iOS or FireOS which personally I think both suck big time.
The best thing about this tablet is that you can replace the battery (the only tablet I found so far). Check Youtube videos because it's the only tablet I found that has screws and no glued battery, parts. This is the main reason I hit buy right away.
This is far better than the Kindle Fire both in hardware and software. For reading, Netflix and media consumption this 8 inch size is perfect. Its not a gaming tablet but for my surprise a medium heavy game I tried (XCOM) runs just fine.
It also has a kid mode which works great.
For the price. This little guy is a nice purchase.
Top reviews from other countries
Build quality is acceptable. It doesn't creak when handled, and the back cover isn't too easily removed, but most of the seams are visible to some degree. Materials don't feel overly cheap, back is textured to make it grippy and overall unit has a nice weight.
The battery saving app seems to do a decent job of shutting down battery hog apps that aren't currently in the foreground. It frequently updates to indicate that some app has been "managed."
The kids management app I found too restrictive. The list did not allow me to select all the books and apps I have for my two kids (2 & 5). I've installed Kids Zone by Out of the Park Apps which has all the sandboxing elements I need including booting into the kids mode, restricting access to settings or messaging apps, browser/online access (e.g. can't open browser or Play Store to buy another game linked within a game). Also see MX Player Pro and the Kids Lock plugin for playing videos. I don't feel the need to root the device to lock the tablet down anymore than these apps allow.
Overall ZenUI is fine. It's not garish, and is a means to an end. Customization is li. I'll probably replace the Home app with Nova Launcher at some point. I wish that apps that use a white Material Design base would allow for a dark/night mode. The notifications pane and settings screens are blinding at night. I guess how often do I need to go into settings?
At the MSRP this is a good value tablet with the right compromises. At 25% off as it was on Black Friday 2016, the value of this tablet can't be beat.
For kids the Bobj ZenPad Z380 case is a great fit for this tablet. It bulks up the tablet quite a bit but gives a secure place for little hands to hang onto while also increasing bumper protection, because you know it's going to get dropped.
Given the price point ( I got it on sale at $60 off the $200 suggested price) this is an excellent choice for casual use and the size and weight is easy to carry along on daily activities or especially when traveling.
Very satisfied so far.
