Run the World: My 3,500-Mile Journey Through Running Cultures Around the Globe Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 246 ratings

From elite marathoner and Olympic hopeful Becky Wade comes the story of her year-long exploration of diverse global running communities from England to Ethiopia—9 countries, 72 host families, and over 3,500 miles of running—investigating unique cultural approaches to the sport and revealing the secrets to the success of runners all over the world.

Fresh off a successful collegiate running career—with multiple NCAA All-American honors and two Olympic Trials qualifying marks to her name—Becky Wade was no stranger to international competition. But after years spent safely sticking to the training methods she knew, Becky was curious about how her counterparts in other countries approached the sport to which she’d dedicated over half of her life. So in 2012, as a recipient of the Watson Fellowship, she packed four pairs of running shoes, cleared her schedule for the year, and took off on a journey to infiltrate diverse running communities around the world. What she encountered far exceeded her expectations and changed her outlook into the sport she loved.

Over the next twelve months—visiting 9 countries with unique and storied running histories, logging over 3,500 miles running over trails, tracks, sidewalks, and dirt roads—Becky explored the varied approaches of runners across the globe. Whether riding shotgun around the streets of London with Olympic champion sprinter Usain Bolt, climbing for an hour at daybreak to the top of Ethiopia’s Mount Entoto just to
start her daily run, or getting lost jogging through the bustling streets of Tokyo, Becky’s unexpected adventures, keen insights, and landscape descriptions take the reader into the heartbeat of distance running around the world.

Upon her return to the United States, she incorporated elements of the training styles she’d sampled into her own program, and her competitive career skyrocketed. When she made her marathon debut in 2013, winning the race in a blazing 2:30, she became the third-fastest woman marathoner under the age of 25 in U.S. history, qualifying for the 2016 Olympic Trials and landing a professional sponsorship from Asics.

From the feel-based approach to running that she learned from the Kenyans, to the grueling uphill workouts she adopted from the Swiss, to the injury-recovery methods she learned from the Japanese, Becky shares the secrets to success from runners and coaches around the world. The story of one athlete’s fascinating journey, Run the World is also a call to change the way we approach the world’s most natural and inclusive sport.

Fresh off a successful collegiate running career—with NCAA All-American honors and an Olympic Trials appearance—Becky Wade was eager to connect with her counterparts across the world and to broaden her perspective on running: the oldest, purest, and most global of all sports. With the funding and support of the Thomas J. Watson Fellowship, Wade packed a year’s worth of running clothes and shoes; said good-bye to her family and friends; and took off on a solo exploration of global running cultures.

Wade’s journey took her to England, Ireland, Switzerland, Ethiopia, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Sweden, and Finland, each country with a unique running history and a community of local athletes and coaches who welcomed her into their homes and onto their teams. Becky Wade's "Run the World" is just what you want in a running book: an interesting story, a compelling writing style, adventure, and inspiration. Wade has a unique story few other elite runners can claim: rather than merely running iconic marathons around the world, Wade got the opportunity to study running with locals in countries around the world. With funny and sweet anecdotes, savvy advice, and recipes to boot, Wade's book fulfills every runner's hunger for a story, and readers will be left satisfied and motivated to continue their own running journeys. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in running and/or international travel and would definitely recommend it as a gift to any runner in your life, young or old.

What can be better than reading about my two great loves ......... Running and Travel !

This book is a fantastic read and a captivating cultural adventure from start to finish. This book is an inspiring story for anyone, whether you're an elite runner or you hate the thought of going for a run.

Wade's stories show us that across the world, people are more similar than they are different and no matter where you go, you can almost always find people that share one of your passions.

This book made me want to put some of Wade's travel destinations on my own bucket list and inspired me to get out and find others that share my passions.

Thank you for giving us a look inside your travels, Becky!

The book was interesting but not what I expected.

I love traveling and running, so this book was a no brainer. But I was excited to see that it delivered so well on that premise! I loved that she got into the differences in approaches to training to see how they can be so different but also equally effective. However, you could tell in the Japan chapter that she was probably starting to wear down from the rigors of travel as the book lost a little bit of the momentum from the earlier chapters as her year finished up... understandably so though. It was an easy, fun read though. I am a fan of Becky as a writer and I look forward to see where her career goes as a runner as well!

I loved reading this book. The wanderluster in me loved learning about new places and adding new destinations to my travel wish list; the wannabe athlete in me loved how physically motivating and surprisingly relatable Becky made elite distance running/training sound through her experiences and narrative. She is relatable and reminds the reader that the world can be a lovely place. Not all travel needs to cost a million dollars and there are a multitude of ways to experience a city, state, country or continent. It was such a fun read.

Such an easy and pleasant read. Not just another book about a day in the life of a runner, but an amazing account of the different cultures of runners from around the world. Running may be a common goal for each of them, but the way they execute it and fit it into their own unique culture really is a fascinating eye opener. A must read book to help inspire your own running.
