Editorial Reviews

Roadrunner Records group Coheed and Cambria have announced details of their long awaited new album and label debut, The Unheavenly Creatures (album art & track listing attached). The sprawling fifteen track, self-produced, 78-minute epic finds Coheed and Cambria returning to the conceptual narrative of The Amory Wars.
Coheed and Cambria recently released The Unheavenly Creatures' 10-minute prog manifesto, "The Dark Sentencer," which was leaked to fans by frontman Claudio Sanchez along with the opening paragraphs from the album's aforementioned novella. "'The Dark Sentencer' opens with prickly guitars that build into a stadium-sized thump," noted Rolling Stone while Revolver declared, "the soaring song with its rolling guitar riff could soundtrack the montage to any intergalactic underdog story." Consequence of Sound hailed "The Dark Sentencer" adding, "Gang vocals and ephemeral harmonies underscore the band's trademark shredding."

To start, this album is leagues better than "Color Before the Sun." The band is back to doing what they do best. Polished, catchy prog rock. Fans of peak C&C should be very happy with this. My only vice is that the 80 minute length of the album detracts from the overall impressiveness. The best songs are the first 3, and the last 3. With the exception of "Gutter," nothing in between really stands out, and listening to the whole album feels like somewhat of a chore. There are 7 great songs, which would typically make the album a triumph, but, because of it's length, it feels like too much humdrum in between the great parts. Cut five of the average tracks, this would be a five-star release. Nonetheless, it's a big return to form from a great band.

EDIT: I just have to edit this review now in 5/2020 because that original 4 star rating I gave this album is NOT RIGHT! For the first few months I owned this album, my original review was suffice, but over the course of last year, I just kept coming back to this album, and enjoying my favorite songs more and more. Then I got lazy and stopped bothering to skip around. Those tracks that originally seemed excessive have truly grown on me to the point where a year and a half after it's release, this has become my favorite album in the world. Some songs are better, but calling them "excessive" was the result of having not listened enough. Albums that grow on you like this are the ones that really last. This album, for me, is just peak C&C. The beauty and heaviness they convey is a rare combination. They have a truly unique sound and this album may not be "innovative" but it's their best one yet.

Another masterpiece by Coheed and Cambria. Truly, I love every song on this album, but my favorites include The Dark Sentencer, Unheavenly Creatures, The Gutter, Queen of the Dark, and Lucky Stars. All of the songs exhibit their strengths in creating songs with many musical layers and lyrics with deep meaning. They are famous for their music telling a story and I'm glad to see a continuation of that style. Claudio is always theatrical in his singing, which makes each song full of energy. These guys are brilliant. We were lucky enough to see Coheed and Cambria VIP style in Asheville this past Friday for my husband's 40th Birthday and it was a pinnacle in our lives. We even got this cd signed and a picture with the band.
The CD itself is amazing, but hearing the songs live is total euphoria. They are true artists. I was a fan for many years because of my husband, but now I'm completely hooked and thirsty for more. If you are trying to decide whether or not to buy this album, do it! You won't regret it! If you haven't already, buy the other albums too. You're welcome!

Great to see that Claudio and the guys are sticking to it. The Pavilion covers Claudio's thoughts on leaving the band, so I'm glad he didn't follow through. The Gutter is an absolute masterpiece, Love Protocol hits so hard and you just want to belt out ever chorus at the top of your lungs. I've been around since the IKSSE3 days, fell in love with almost all of their songs from each album, and have stuck with their music for 15 years. This newer album has such a nice variety of tones, between the heaviness of The Gutter, the pop rock vibes of Old Flames, the pump-up heavy rhythm of The Dark Sentencer, the heart-felt emotions blasting through in Love Protocol and the very Island-esque nostalgic groove of The Pavilion.

The production quality is outstanding, the lyricism and rhythmic structure is elegant and intense, and some songs from this album easily break into my top 10 for these guys. Saw them live, as well, and the Prologue into Dark Sentencer really gets the crowd moving.

Easiest 5 starts I've ever given to an album.

Long time Coheed fan here and personally loved Color Before the Sun even though it was a departure. If I had left a review the first day or two of listening to Unheavenly Creatures, I probably would have left 3 or 4 stars. For whatever reason, the enjoyment curve feels exceedingly long for this album. The more I have listened the greater I appreciate the variety of songs and frequent moments where I'm compelled to sing along. Just give it some time before making your final assessment is all I can suggest. I have also read many reviews that had pretty different takes on which songs were deemed quality or "filler". So, it's obviously highly subjective as is the case with art.

Coheed extends their Amory Wars universe in an amazing way! There are no skip-worthy tracks on this album. 20 years later and this band is still putting out bangers! I highly recommend this album to new and old fans alike

This is just a masterpiece of an album. I found these guys a long time ago because of other prog metal bands and I've always found these guys good, just not great. There would be songs on previous albums that would be awesome and songs that fell flat for me. This album is a lot different.

This album offers so much. All the songs are so different from each other and I absolutely love it. I've listened through twice and there isn't a bad song.

I have been recommending this song to a lot of people because this album just blew me away with how good it is. Hope you all are enjoying it as well!

I remember seeing an interview with Claudio and he dropped a hint at a new Burning Star V-like album. Wow, did they deliver!? This album is something quite incredible. I was spoiled with Breaking Benjamin's Ember this year but this album absolutely blew me away on the first listen. The progressive sounds of Burning Star IV run right through and especially in songs like The Dark Sentencer.

The style is bright, vibrant, clear and punchy. Claudio's vocals and range are stunning and blasted out in every accompanying style in every track. You feel like the band knows exactly what will work on a conceptual album and on stage. It's really very clever how they have done it and a real joy to listen to.

I was so hooked on listening through for the first time and a few listens on I get something new each time, I don't think any of the songs tires which is impressive for an album almost 1 hour and 20 minutes in length.

If you are a Coheed fan you will love it and even for a newcomer to the band, I would highly recommend it. Love Protocol, The Pavillion and It Walks Among Us are fantastic new tracks (excluding those pre-released) but I don't think it's worth singling out tracks from the album, they really are solid in their own right.

I am aware that my opinions could be seen as "Fanboying" and that's understandable enough as a long time listener of the band but definitely give this a listen. I can honestly say it's one of the best albums I have ever had the pleasure of listening to.
