Parental Advisory: As usual for a pirate show there's some mild violence though some of the protagonists due get injured at times (not from weapons but creatures, though thankfully there's no blood). There's some chaste flirting at times between Ren and Tula, and Tula from episode 6 to the end wears a midriff baring outfit (think Princess Jasmine in pink). Finally there are some dark moments that would require parental supervision. Ren loses his father in the first episode, one character's face melts in one episode, and some villains are frightening from Bloth himself to the Dark Dweller in two episodes, but the most disturbing foe is Morpho, a disciple of the Dark Dweller whose face is half-human half-razor tooth fish.
As a tease and in the hopes of creating another season, the final episode starts the second stage of Ren's quest to find the remaining treasures. You can tell that instead of recycling the same plot from the first season, that they are going to offer something new but maybe not as exciting. The show starts to feel more mature, growing with its audience as the characters themselves 'grow up/develup'. From here, you need to jump to the comic book series. (I have three collectors copies!) The comics follow the series but you get a bonus 3-part side adventure. The comics appear to be written off the series so they did not continue into the season season content.
There is rumor that season two existed but some idiot taped over the master copies, which to this day appear to be the only copies made. Hopefully, the studio keeps a secret vault with backups that may appear on its 40th anniversary or something. It's heartbreaking to know we may never see the end of the quest. These characters stick with you. In fact, I've reached the point where I will no longer watch new cartoons or anime until the series concludes. Seems all my favs are pulled prematurely, the Thundercats remake being one of them.
As to the quality of the recording: I have the original VHS movie release - which is a compilation of the first couple of episodes. JEM and Gargoyles both did a feature using the same method. I also have the original home recordings. My recordings are crystal clear, great sound, and without cuts. The DVDs I purchased were through Amazon as a print on demand so they took a while to receive. I was ecstatic just to discover they were finally available! I grudgingly paid $30 US dollars. The disks arrived in a normal case and the cover art was fantastic! You could tell it was a lower quality burn on the DVDs just by looking at the watermarks on the disk. But hey, I went into this knowing it wasn't remastered.
I wasn't disappointed at first. The color was brilliant and vibrant! Overall, the sound is also fantastic and well balanced. Now, if your like me and get really OCD about the playback: quality, grain, coloring, viewer settings and so on...all the things your friends say you are imagining, then you may notice a few stray glitches now and again where the sound or sync might seem off or the image a tad fuzzed. Very minor. Its an old cartoons and some of the issues are just with the way it was created, not the fault of the DVD reproduction. I was fortunate enough to be able to watch this on a tube TV which was originally designed for, and a flat screen that adjusted for older content. I overlooked these imperfections and accepted them as normal. Then you reach the Money Bird Episode - Pandra or something like that.
I love this episode because we really get a look into the type of person and King Ren will become. This adventure isn't just about his quest or his own homeland, it's about doing what is morally right and about virtues. At this point, he's not just a cute, willful teenager leaping into action before looking...here he shows he can be a responsible and respectable person worthy of loyalty and allegiance. The episode itself is a turning point for Ren. So while not a fan-favorite its a corner stone to the development of the series. It is also the problem child of the DVDs.
The episode starts off fine, but then starts to glitch, skip, and eventually freezes. Naturally, this also affects the sound track and the synchronization of the sound with the video. This issue carries on throughout the episode and half way into the following episode. This issue is aggravating for all fans and is the worst it gets! However, it doesn't render the episode unwatchable. The most you really miss is some dialogue about the queens egg during the cave scene segment or there-about.
I tested the video on four DVD players and my computer noting the timestamps of the issue and reached out to Amazon. They replaced the set for me twice. I had repeats issues with the same episode at the same timestamps. This told me the issue was with the coding and maybe Amazon had a bad batch. I reached out to the manufacturer directly. Having already watched the series twice to test the new disks I requested they just replace the bad one, which they did. Same issue. They looked into it and stated that the original recordings they taped the DVDs from were purchased through the network. The networks copy was damaged. Something I feel they should have disclosed in the item description. If any one else has purchased this series and not had issues with this episode, please let me know!!! If it's been fixed, I want another copy! It is my belief they purchased the tape copies they recorded from through Cartoon Network. I believe this because the episodes are cut.
I have two recordings of this content on VHS. One from the cartoon network which is cut, and one from another network which I believe to be the Canadian copies. These copies are uncut and without blemish. From that same secondary network I also have recordings of Jem and other shows that are also uncut compared to their 'American' release which was used to make the DVDs. It would be nice if they would purchase the uncut episodes from more respectable studios or return to the original masters rather than collect the cheep damaged ones. And stop cutting out the PSAs!!
I wouldn't pay another $30 dollars for this series unless it was properly remastered to Blue-ray. For DVDs I feel its worth about $20 if they fix it and $15 if they do not. The series itself I have nothing against and highly recommend. It'd be a shame not to share it with the next generation. With the price dropping for the holidays, I am considering getting a set for my brother. He's already seen mine and is aware of what to expect.

Kleinere Kinder spricht Pirates of Dark Water wahrscheinlich eher weniger an.
