A decent story that badly needs editing.

A decent story that badly needs editing.
I read a different series by this author that I enjoyed so I picked up this one. The premise of the story and everything going on is generally an interesting read. This series badly needs to be edited, though. Or be edited again, if it was previously.Across all five books, there are many simple mistakes made in quotations or punctuation. There are many times where there is no opening quotation mark, so you don't know that dialogue has started or there's no closing quotation mark, so you don't know that dialogue ended. Quotation marks should be in pairs so that it is clear when a character is speaking and when they aren't.One or two across five books, sure... That's something that was missed. However, I counted at least 4 times in the last few chapters of the 5th book and noticed more of these mistakes in the previous chapters and books. The author should have an editor go through the books and catch these mistakes so that they can be fixed for future readers.Outside of simple punctuation mistakes like these, the story is fine. I think the author had a clear idea of character arcs but the story does drag them out a bit. There's a lot of action, which makes sense in the scope of the series but there is a lot of internal monologuing about the characters flaws and what they think before they do anything. The story itself did drag on and likely could have been shortened some.Overall I think the story itself is fine but needs an editor to comb through it again.

With a twisty plot, unforgettable characters, and scary descriptions of the everglades, this is a set you won’t want to put down until you know “what’s going to happen to them?”

This was my first Kyla Stone book and my first time reading a survival thriller like this. It won’t be the last. I really enjoyed this book, and the entire series, which I sped through because I couldn’t put it down/stop listening.

There were several hooks early on that had me very curious about things, above and beyond the obvious catastrophe. Some people may find the over descriptive parts about what to do to survive a little tedious, since it’s often said that the author should show and not tell, but in this instance, I really liked it. It is done in what, to me, feels like a very natural way as Dakota teaches the others. It almost felt like a manual, like a suspenseful and tension-filled manual of what to do and what not to do. It seems like a lot of research and thought was put into it. I felt invested in the interesting characters. I was surprised with the abrupt ending, but the following books make up for it.

Tensions really start to build in the subsequent books, with more than just the overall catastrophe and the other survivors. The action gets even more edge-of-your-seat and non-stop. The later books also tugged at my heartstrings a little more. A great journey and a satisfying conclusion!

I read part of the series and listened to another part on audiobook. The narrator, Stacey Glemboski, was great.

A couple of things bug me about this book. First, sometimes the author describes things in way too much detail. Not like flavor text or flowery language, but by listing all the contents of a pack or what the characters had for dinner. That kinda bugged me a little. The characters also had a habit of monologuing, too. Whether it's an infodump about nuclear weapons given in the form of dialogue or the story's message summarized in a conversation, it feels a bit out of place.
That said? I enjoyed reading it. Nothing about this book is outright bad. The characters felt real-ish, the story was compelling, and the author definitely knows her stuff.
I was able to predict most of the major plot points. I mean, things just sort of followed the paths other books have worn out. But the characters are solid enough, the writing good enough, that I enjoyed it.

Very good and gripping story, no unnecessary love scenes. I really liked Ezra, the prepper and the cult around the Prophet.
Only small drawback: The pace was a bit slow at times.

Loved the amount of details, even some grotesque, of what a nuclear apocalypse would cause. This series is completely binge worthy and I was almost sad to finish it. Started on the audio version just to keep it going a little longer.

Surviving the blast is only the beginning...

Following a catastrophic nuclear attack which targeted 13 major cities, millions are wiped out in an instant while others are left to deal with the after effects of radiation poisoning. Troubled teen, Dakota Sloane has been working in a bar in Miami, trying to save enough money to get her younger sister Eden, out of foster care. Two years ago, they escaped the Everglades from a cult called the Shepherds of Mercy, which is run by the fanatic Solomon Cage. Dakota has changed her name and stayed incognito since.

Minutes before the attack, Dakota spots Maddox Cage, the cult leader’s son, getting into a taxi through her bar window. Realising he’s tracked down Eden’s whereabouts, Dakota decides to up her plans to leave with Eden sooner than she had anticipated. As different cities come under attack on the news bulletin, Dakota comes to a horrifying realisation and is able to text Eden seconds before a blinding light flashes and Miami also succumbs to an attack.

Following the blast, Dakota and a few survivors from the bar seek refuge in a movie theatre as they wait for the radiation levels to drop. The survivors include Julio, the bar owner, Shay who has some medical experience and Logan Garcia, a loner, haunted by his past who seeks solace in a bottle.

Forty eight hours later, Dakota’s anxiety for Eden has worsened as she suspects that Maddox may have survived and will possibly head out for her sister. Sensing that he can handle himself with a gun, she makes a deal with Logan; access to a secure safe haven deep in the Everglades in return for accompanying her while she rescues her sister. Logan agrees. With Julio and Shay also insisting on going her, the group set out on a journey through wasteland that is fraught with danger not only from radiation but from aspects of humanity itself.

As the books progress we learn that the Shepherds of Mercy have been behind the attacks all along. Can Dakota save her sister and prevent another catastrophic attack on US soil?

This boxset consists of all five books in what has been a tense and exciting post apocalyptic survival series. Each instalment is told from five points of view; Dakota, Eden, Logan, Maddox and Shay. From the offset, I found myself totally immersed in the premise of the story. The impact on survivors from a nuclear explosion where knowledge and survival skills could be the only thing standing between life and death? Luckily our group has Dakota, who thanks to her mentor Ezra, has been taught survivalist skills.

The strength of the book lies in the fascinating world building that the author has managed to create. It’s apparent throughout that the author has done a lot of research which sets it apart from other novels of similar themes.

The characters were quickly introduced, developed and understood. Dakota, Eden and Logan are troubled protagonists, each with a dark past which is only hinted at in this instalment. We learn that Dakota and Eden were sent to a religious compound by their Aunt, following the death of their parents. They escaped and sought refuge with Ezra, a hermit who lived in the Everglades. While Dakota is tough, resilient and a survivor mainly because she’s HAD to be, Logan chooses to drown his demons in a bottle. Eden, despite being alone and hearing impaired, handles her situation admirably for a fifteen year old. Her faith in her sister, unshakable. The secondary characters were equally appealing. Ezra, Julio, Shay, Park and Hawthorne came across as decent, caring people. Unfortunately when society breaks down, it brings out the worst of humanity too and our group are exposed to its good and bad aspects.

All in all, the author has delivered an intriguing well executed, gritty edge of your seat box set. The plot moves along fluidly and while certain scenes crackled with tension, others genuinely tugged at my heartstrings. This has been a fantastical multi layered journey of self discovery, powered by adept character development, relentless pacing and building to a climax that is neat and satisfying. I’ll definitely be looking out for future works from the author.

Trigger warnings, religious cult, patriarchal societies, physical and mental abuse, child marriages, torture, gang related violence.
