Under Night In-Birth
Under Night In-Birth Exe: Late
Under Night In-Birth Exe: Late[st]
List of Changes:
1. One new playable character (as appose to 4 in Late[st]): Londrekia + Story (Arcade only, not in Chronicles)
2. New moves and balance adjustments to every character with 1,000 balance adjustments and refinements. Some characters play way different than original if you look into it
3. 5 new color scheme for each character (total of 40 new color schemes)
4. Gallery Mode has been expanded
Those that owned Under Night In-Birth Exe: Late[st] will get free balance patch
For those who haven't played Under Night In-Birth, it's a visual novel + 2D fighter (1v1).
--Story/plot. Visual Novel (Chronicles mode):
An event called Hollow Night occurs once a month where monsters called Voids appear. Different characters and organizations come together to take them out.
There's a lot of filler text and exposition. Only one character portrait per character. No dialogue choices or battles in between.
Only English sub, no dub so tons of reading. There are some grammatical errors for you Grammar Nazis to pick at
This mode will last around 25-30 hours depending on how fast your read
--Gameplay:
Tutorial in the game is really good. Best to go to this mode before jumping in. There's also a mission mode where it teach you basic mechanics of each character
Has a basic 4 button layout: light, medium, strong attack and universal mechanic button (charge GRD meter). Pressing multiple buttons have different functions like grabs, Force Function (push away attack or double jump) , etc
This game is very reliant on combos for high level play. There is an auto combo mode for beginners
There's a EXS gauge (or special meter) to do special attacks. when meter is at 100%, characters can use Infinite
Worths move for massive damage
If your health is below 30% and you press all four buttons you will activate their Infinite Worth EXS which is does least 1/3 damage to opponent's health
There's a GRD line meter which both players share. This increases or decreases based on damage taken (can be charged up as mentioned before). When the circle timer is max out, player with the most meter in the tug-o-war will get a slight damage boost. This makes for a more fast and offensive games, which esports tend to lean towards nowadays, also to get players off the machine faster/put in more coin at the arcades
Each character is unique with no clones. Battle animations are fluid, and lends itself to a lot of play styles
Game modes: Versus, Arcade, Score Attack, Time Attack, Survival mode, and Network (online mode).
Versus: play against local friend or CPU
Arcade, score attack, and time attack mode pits you against 10 characters in a row. Only difference is arcade has very short individual story (opening, middle and end) of character you select, score attack you can upload and compare scores, and time attack records how fast you can win against 10 random fighters.
Survival mode is an endless gauntlet. Health bar/damage does carry over to next round. You do get to heal a small bit of life after each round (maybe 10%)
Online is a mixed bag. Sometimes there's a smooth connection and others there's tons of lag. May depend on opponents internet speed compared to yours. There are still tons of players playing this game online as of this review (Feb 2020).
There's also a gallery mode which you spend in-game money through battles on player icons, banners, concept art and music
Load times are excellent in this game. This is saying a lot for fighting games where most are stuck at vs screen for 15-20secs. This game has less than 5 second transition.
If you own the last game in the franchise 'Under Night In-Birth Exe: Late[st]' there's not much new from this update aside from one new character. Unless you're planing to join in on the competitive scene or fan of the franchise. For just jumping in; it's a good purchase for the definitive edition (assuming they don't release another one).

This game is killer, and will teach you everything you could possibly want to know about fighting games. Can't beat 2D sprites.
