Wagner’s Cracked Corn
Our Wagner's Cracked Corn is enjoyed by a variety of ground feeding birds such as Blue Jays, Cardinals, Doves, Juncos, Quail, Pheasants, Ducks and Grouse. Rabbits, chipmunks and other playful wildlife will be attracted as well. It can be fed on its own or mixed with other seed. Many people feed cracked corn separately from their regular bird feeding area so that playful squirrels and other small animals have their own place to eat - diverting them from eating at your bird feeders. Sprinkle some on the ground where it is easily accessible by both birds and animals. Use Wagner’s Cracked Corn and enjoy that "close to nature" feeling that comes with feeding your own backyard wildlife. Trust your backyard birds to the experts at Wagner’s.
Bird Feeding Fundamentals - When Feeding Wild Birds, There Are 4 Keys To a Successful Program

FoodProvide different types of food to attract more variety of birds. Sunflower is a great seed that many species love. Higher quality mixes attract more birds. Keep feeders full so birds will continue to visit. |
FeedersProvide a variety of feeders to attract the greatest variety of birds. Use hoppers and tube feeders for Sunflower and mixes. Use Finch feeders for Nyjer and Finch mixes. Platform feeders will accommodate ground feeding birds. |
WaterProvide a shallow water source (2 inch-3 inch deep) so birds can bathe and drink. Water also attracts birds that feeding stations alone cannot, such as ones that feed on insects alone. |
LocationPlace feeders in locations already frequented by birds. Place by shrubs and/or trees to offer protection. |
FAQ's
Where should I locate my feeder to attract the most birds?
Make sure that your feeder is close to natural shelter such as trees and shrubs to provide protection for your birds, but be careful not to make it too convenient for squirrels. Also, place it in a location so that you can enjoy watching the activities of your feathered friends.
Should I feed the birds year-round?
Yes, birds need food year-round, so it is best to keep bird feeders full all year. Birds have a high metabolism and need to continually eat. Birds nest from late winter through late summer and during these months there is not an abundance of natural foods, so they need additional food for breeding and raising their young.
What is the best bird food?
Oil Sunflower Seed is one of the best seeds to have in a wild bird food mix. It is popular with a large number of species and is easy to feed in a variety of feeder styles. Wagner's blends provide a wide selection of seed choices that will attract a largest variety of birds to the backyard feeder. Wagner's has the mixes that will attract the species you want and will fit any budget.
How can I attract specific birds and not attract others (e.g. starlings, grackles and cowbirds)?
Make sure that you have the right bird food to attract specific birds. Sunflower is a great seed that many species love. Also specialty blends, such as Wagner's Cardinal Blend or Finches Supreme, will attract these specific birds. Birdseed with less milo and corn won't attract as many cowbirds, grackles and starlings if you would rather not see these birds.
How do I stop squirrels from eating all of my birdseed?
Squirrels are a common problem at bird feeders. There are now a number of feeder styles designed to prevent squirrels from reaching the seed. Additionally, there are two seeds that squirrels do not like -- safflower and nyjer seed. An optional method is to supply the squirrels with their own supply of food away from the bird feeder area. Cracked corn works nicely.
Where and how should I store my bird seed after I bring it home?
Store your bird seed elevated on a shelf in a cool, dry location. Make sure that it is closed or sealed tightly in original package or in a storage container. It is important that the storage location has good air circulation and is away from direct sunlight or heat source. You should avoid storing your bird seed on a cement floor, since moisture from the floor can be transferred to the seed.

Peanuts are a sure win, though since I have a nut-allergic friend coming over regularly that's literally off the table. They are the most popular, and if that's an option for your birds, go for it. The only downside there is sometimes it looks like the birds, especially the doves, might choke on it.
For morning doves, sunflower hearts and this cracked corn are tied for second. As I type one dove it sitting on the windowsill eating the hearts and the other is eating this. Doves are city birds. They don't care. A human wants to watch? That's fine. There's food. They're fast and they know it. They just eat. Some of the doves, having had thistle seed, will settle for nothing else. Yep, we've taught a flock of scavenger birds to be finicky.
The bag say titmice won't eat this. The titmice did not read the bag. They love it. It is tied with sunflower hearts, but for them I suspect it's based on comfort level with humans. The ones who just snatch a seed and fly away prefer the more portable sunflower hearts. The ones who feel confident enough to stay a few minutes and eat prefer these. If your feeder is in a place birds feel less threatened, I think this will be a top winner. That means I like this best for them, because I get to see them longer.
For blue jays, this is more popular than the sunflower hearts. Again, there is the nervous nature of these birds. I'm more likely to catch them eating when I first come into the kitchen, before they see me. Sometimes they hang out and eat, and that's awesome. They're beautiful, and I hope this tempts them to hang out more. I'm definitely getting more visits from them since I started putting this out.
For woodpeckers this is beaks down a winner, even over peanuts. They love this stuff. I've had more of them visit since putting this out than ever before.
It's trial and error to find what the local birds like, what tempts them, and I'll probably keep experimenting but I'll be stocking this for my feeder. It's a hit.
The bag is very sturdy, opens easily, and sadly doesn't reseal. I don't know why that isn't a more common feature in bird food bags. Seems a needed and obvious one to me.
