But this is a serious matter that the author is dealing with. He opens the book with the statement of his motivation: "I shall leave this book with you as a legacy of my dearest love, desiring the Lord to make it a far greater and sweeter legacy than all those carnal legacies that are left by the high and mighty ones of the earth to their nearest and dearest relations...My desire to you are, that you would make it your business to study Christ, his word, your own hearts, Satan's plots, and eternity, more than ever;... For a close, remember this, that your life is short, your duties many, your assistance great, and your reward sure; therefore faint not, hold on and hold up, in ways of well-doing, and heaven shall make amends for all." (p. 18-20) Interestingly Brooks notes "The strange opposition that I met with from Satan, in the study of this following discourse". This intensified his resolve to write this treatise so as "to shake and break his kingdom of darkness, and to lift up the kingdom and glory of the Lord Jesus Christ, in the souls and lives of the children of men." (p.17)
From these, one can sense the urgency and sincerity in this treaties, something that the Puritans never fail to convey in their writings, according to my experience. This book is not the easiest to read because it is jam-packed with truths in the most intense form. It is not a book that you skimp through but go through at a steady pace over a period of time. It is one of those books that should be digested slowly rather than read speedily. There is a lot in there to reflect and contemplate. Brooks himself observes that "It is not he that reads most, but he that meditates most, that will prove the choicest, sweetest, wisest and strongest Christian." (p.21)
The subject matter I find very helpful. Brooks notes that one of his motivations in writing this book was because it had not be attempted before. In that kind of depth and comprehensiveness, I will not be surprised that this still holds true. What is the application for us? Battling sins is daily struggle for Christian. Christ's victory does not feel like reality in our life. We often feel lost, hurt, disabled, perplexed, and trapped in situations, and Christ cannot be more distant and irrelevant. Now, this book is a comfort for two things: (1) Satan's plots and devices are exhaustive! It can be numbered and counted through. (2) There are remedies - and they make up the longer list than the former! We are on the winning side!! "Being forewarned is being forearmed." If we have thought through Satan's schemes in advance, the remedies do follow. Our Christian walk should be more effective and profitable for Christ's sake. But the challenge is: do we have the diligence and devotion as the Puritans to heed to and to act on these remedies? I feel we are used to life at peacetime and economic boom time that we don't know much of working hard. We expect food to be served to us on a plate, and we lose the hunting skills. Life is so convenient and comfortable (especially more and more are available and accomplished at the click of buttons!) that we become less and less resourceful and resilient. Passivity and inertia are what modern day trends we are fighting. But Brooks says, "Christ, the Scripture, your own hearts, and Satan's devices, are the four prime things that should be first and most studied and searched. If any cast off the study of these, they cannot be safe here, nor happy hereafter." (p.15) In the advanced countries, most people are literate, but are we reading and what are we reading? That is what makes a difference between defeat and victory. It is not that we don't know the winning formula, but whether we will seize it and obey. How do we overcome our wilful ignorance? "An ignorant heart is an evil heart." (p. 211) "Ignorance is the mother of destruction." (p.212) "Ignorance is a sin that leads to all sins." (p.212) It is a moral issue.
"A man may lawfully sell his house, land and jewels, but truth is a jewel that exceeds all price, and must not be sold; it is our heritage: 'Thy testimonies have I taken as an heritage for ever' (Ps 119:111). It is a legacy that our forefathers have bought with their bloods, which should make us willing to lay down anything, and to lay out anything, that we may, with the wise merchant in the Gospel (Matt 13:45), purchase this precious pearl, which is more worth than heaven and earth, and which will make a man live happily, die comfortably, and reign eternally." (p. 21) May the counsel not fall on deaf ears, but spur us on to cherish and possess this treasure and pass it on faithfully.
