& WILL BUY SOME FOR PRESENTS THIS
YEAR!
Song wise: I've never been a big fan of the original "Merry Christmas". When she sticks to fun songs it's magic. For instance, "All I Want 4 Christmas is You". That song is just so festive! A true classic, even though it's overplayed. (Do we really have to hear it a billion times EVERY winter? Sheesh!).
All that aside I found most of the other selections too vanilla for my taste. Tommy Motolla convinced her to lower the volume, cut the signature whistle notes and be as adult contemporary MOR as possible on "Music Box" (My least fav early MC release) and it continues here. Take a note of how the album opens with "Silent Night". Of all the Christmas songs, why did they choose this one? Mariah sounds so stiff and so well, white. There's no R&B here. There's no fun here. It's just worship and it reminds me of those stiff, awkward catholic prayer meetings. Not what I look for in a Mariah album. Even "Jesus Born On This Day" has a cheesy children's choir. I'll level with ya, I live in the hood and this is NOT what I bought this album 4. To it's credit I do like "Jesus Born On This Day", all cheesiness aside.
When she lightens up is when this album gets pep. Her rendition of "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" is a huge favorite of this listener. In a lot of ways it's an improvement over the original by Darlene Love, which was also great. I also enjoy her festive versions of "Joy to the World" and the cheery, pep of "Santa Claus is Comin' 2 Town". "O Holy Night" is by far the best of the ballads. We all know by now that Mariah is a great songwriter and all her compositions on here are delightful.
The PACKAGING is gorgeous! I can't state how attractive is. It's a glossy fold out digipack. There are unseen photos from the original 1994 photo shoot. Mariah is seen in a red Santa suit frolicking in the snow with reindeer in the snow. She looks fantastic! The gloss of the package is SO smooth, shiny and visually and tangibly appealing, I can't resist touching it lol.
In 1994 Mariah was on top of the world. She had amassed several number one hits and was the biggest female superstar this side of Madonna and Janet Jackson. Vocally she was really impressive. Her tone, her control, her power, her range. U name it she could blow! Mariah Carey is still AMAZINGLY talented, but in her early career she represented Pop music. She's an icon. She's forever a legend and in a lot of ways releases like these are what the fans want to remember her for and how can you blame them? When the music is so timeless. Even 25 years after it was first released. The album was originally good and, with the addition of several live tracks in concert, rare remixes etc, it's made even better. And that's ALWAYS good news.
PS the newer tracks are worth checking out. Especially "Oh Santa".
Breakdown:
Original album - 3 & a half stars
Packaging - 5 stars
Vocals - 5 stars
Value - 5 stars
We'll start with the packaging. It's clear that Sony / Legacy has had this release lined up for a while - as indicated by its catalogue number - so to finally have it materialize is very nice. The booklets and two discs are (unfortunately) housed in an shiny embossed, multi-panel digipak, requiring the user slide the discs out to use them. Luckily in this instance the discs are somewhat easy to get out, but digipaks still make any disc prone to scuffing. Sony / Legacy could have still gone with shiny, embossed packaging if they had packaged the discs in a standard 2-CD case and used a slip sleeve. I woudn't have minded paying a few extra bucks for that. Despite the use of a digipak, the photos inside are nice, many of which I have never seen before. Fans are also treated to an all-new booklet with liner notes, which include an alternate album cover, some more new photos, and a written introduction by Mariah. Pretty cool! Also included is a separate multi-panel fold-out booklet, which includes a timeline of milestones related to the album on one side. The opposite side of each panel contains the same animated image of Mariah in a pose similar to the album cover.
As far as disc contents go, disc one (the main album) is timeless as ever. From covering the standards like Joy to the World or Silent Night, to singing gospel-esque songs like Jesus, Oh What a Wonderful Child, to breaking records with her modern-day jazzy pop classic All I Want For Christmas Is You, Mariah and her unmistakable voice absolutely shine on this record, even 25 years after its release. It should be noted that the version of the album included here is the non-US version, which includes God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen as track 11. The version of God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen that appears here is the original 1994 version, and NOT the "Anniversary Mix" included on the CD side of the DualDisc released in 2005.
Disc 2 is a bit of a toss-up. Opening the album is the Sugar Plum Fairy Introlude, Mariah's take on the Christmas classic. It's a short, 40-second intro and Mariah sounds absolutely incredible here, and even more so on the acapella version, which closes disc 2. Tracks 2 - 7 are breathtaking live renditions of songs on the album, recorded at The Cathedral of St. John The Divine. Mariah sounds phenomenal here, however, these live tracks really could have benefitted from a standalone live EP release with a bonus DVD of the performances to accompany it.
Track 8 is Oh Santa! from Mariah's second Christmas album, Merry Christmas II You. In a lazy move on Sony / Legacy's part, the version included here is the original album version, which segues from an instrumental Santa Claus is Coming to Town intro that isn't included here, so the beginning is very abrupt and sloppy. A "radio" / "single" mix exists out there that removes the included tail end of the previous song's instrumental, and that should've been the version on this compilation. Regardless, Oh Santa! is still timeless and should've been as big of a hit as All I Want For Christmas Is You. Christmastime is in the Air Again is another Merry Christmas II You track, and it's a beautiful, lush production that showcases Mariah's sultry vocals. Up next is When Christmas Comes, which appears here in its single version, which features a guest appearance by John Legend. It's fun, lighthearted and festive!
Tracks 11 and 12 are The Star and Lil Snowman, both of which come from 2017 holiday films The Star and Mariah's very own All I Want For Christmas Is You, respectively. The Star is a more subdued ballad, while Lil Snowman is a more fun and upbeat track, resembling Run Rudolph Run, another Christmas classic that has been covered by many over the years.
Track 13 is the "Anniversary Mix" of Santa Claus is Coming to Town, originally included on the CD side of the 2005 DualDisc release of Merry Christmas. This version features more upbeat vocals and a super fun melody, its arrangement nearly identical to the version recorded decades prior by The Jackson 5.
Tracks 14 - 17 are all remixes of songs from Merry Christmas, most of which fall between 6 and 8 minutes in length. Take them or leave them, but they seem to serve more as filler than anything else on this compilation.
All-in-all, this release has been highly anticipated, and it has finally arrived with mixed results. The main album sounds incredible and timeless as ever, and it's a real treat to have new liner notes and the beautiful live tracks. However, it would've been nice if the packaging was a little more durable, and it would've been even better to see some more newly recorded material, and maybe even the inclusion of the 2005 Anniversary Mix of God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen, and the super energetic Oh Santa! All I Want For Christmas Is You mashup would've served better purpose on this compilation in place of some of the many (long) remixes that were used to pad the second disc out. A bonus DVD would have also been nice, with live performances, music videos and the animated videos that were included on the 2005 DualDisc.
With All I Want For Christmas Is You predicted to hit the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 this year and Mariah's Christmas tour entering its 5th consecutive year, I highly doubt this is the last Christmas release we will see from Mariah. Here's hoping we get a more packed release next time around!
