In August I always have a huge crop of super fine, and super ripe, tomatoes -- way more than I can put into our daily diet. So with that big August and September crop from my yard (and my garden herbs), I make a few big pots of traditional chunky Marinara sauce, and freeze it for dinners in the winter months. This year, after blanching and preparing my fresh tomatoes for the big pot, I decide to do a taste test with these canned tomatoes: my garden tomatoes vs. the can tomatoes. I figured I would win, hands down. No. These were nearly on par. And the sauces I have made with them are really excellent.
Now I use them in winter months with fresh salads -- out of can, drained and sliced into the fresh salad. People asks where I got such good tomatoes in the middle of winter....
One caution. The cans do have a little added salt. Just the right amount, in my opinion. But if you are stewing them down into a sauce, the salt is their. Before adding more, do a taste test.
I bought a big box of these the first order, and I am buy more. They have a labeled shelf life of 2 years. And each can contains at least 6 to 8 small, firm, whole tomatoes, along with a modest amount of a very good tomato sauce.
Addendum 10/2018: I have just ordered my winter stock again. I have a good supply of my own tomato harvest, but having these on hand helps make the stock last. I have no idea why anyone would be disturbed by "dented cans" -- if the cans are intact, does it matter? My orders have never been dented. Oh well, so it goes. Inside the can, the product is superb, even if you find a dented can.
Addendum 10/2019: I do not mind a few dented cans. The order this year were all fine, no major dents. And still good tomatoes.
They have a great flavor and I love the fire-roasted taste. When I make my tomato sauce it has a nice rich color.
---------------------------------
Back in 2011, the last time I ordered this product from Amazon.com, the case of tomato sauce cans had no dents and were BPA free. Unfortunately, prior to that there were several dented cans in each case. Because Amazon was out of this product when I ordered, last week (8/22/2012), I received a case from another reliable dealer in which half of the case contained dented cans and all contained BPA. I wrote Muir Glen, which is a div. of General Mills, and a customer rep. called me today. The cans are packaged by them in case lots by automated equipment. She's sending the info on the dented cans to quality control. As to the BPA issue, she advised that 2 seasons ago they stopped using BPA cans but some pre-2014 use-by-date cans may still contain the white lining/BPA in the cans. About half of the cans that expire in 2013 contain BPA. So, please check the "use by date" on the can. My case lot had a use-by-date of 23Feb2013, the bar code number is (small 7) 2534228571 (small 4). FYI, I'm not buying this product again unless I can see the "use by date." It's still a great tasting, no-salt-added tomato sauce. (Revised 8/27/2012)
