Phantom Poetry: A collection of poems inspired by the tale of The Phantom of the Opera: Romantic Poetry and Prose Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 34 ratings

From award-winning author Kayla Lowe comes a collection of poems inspired by the classic tale of The Phantom of the Opera. Originally published by Gaston Leroux in 1909 and then later transformed into the Broadway award-winning musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber, the tragic story of the disfigured musical genius who lived in the bowels of the Palais Garnier has captivated audiences for more than a century. Never before has anyone published a book of poetry pertaining exclusively to the love triangle that existed between the Phantom, his ingenue (Christine Daae), and her vicomte (Raoul de Chagny). This poetry collection consists of three chapbooks that explore these characters from a poetic standpoint. Divided into three parts, the collection features more than 100 poems that take readers on a dramatic journey to the past and into the infamous Phantom’s lair where passion, obsession, music, love, and artifice reign.

The Phantom of the Opera is a tale more than a century old that has been told in theatre, fiction, film, and now, in a collection of poems that captures multiple perspectives within this literary classic. Using a series of persona poems, Kayla Lowe imagines the emotions and thoughts of each of Phantom’s three main characters by writing from their points of view. The result is a beautiful and often chilling account of the story from a three dimensional perspective. Most successful are the poems that capture the viewpoint of Erik, the Phantom; these works are excellent in their rendering of his personal torment, horrific past, and desire to be loved. Fans of the musical or book will appreciate the additional insight the different poems lend to the story, but Lowe provides sufficient detail and background that the collection can serve as an introduction to Phantom as well and possibly open doors for poetry readers to discover its seminal role in popular culture.

I have mixed feelings about this book. At times I liked the style, the verse, the feelings and imaginary. Knowing the story and the Weber version of the Phantom of the Opera it is impossible not to think of the verses that are immortalized by that musical. Keeping that in mind, judging only by what I read in this book I don't think they are as deep and as beautifully expressed as the Weber version. They are, as i said, good at times, interesting, but do not fit the purpose. Again, what is the purpose of the book? Sine we already have a perfect version with music and lyrics of the Novel by Leroux. I think this would be a nice addition if you area die hard passionate about the Phantom of the Opera. So I gave it 4 stars for the passion she has and some verses, like the one with the red scarf, "gifted from a father, rescued by a childhood sweetheart". I think the author has talent and should try something more original.

Gorgeously crafted poetry rich in beautiful and often poignant imagery will take you right into the heart of the story. A MUST HAVE for any PHAN!!!!

Pleasant poems. Poetry is a lost art nowadays, but I still enjoy them.

Note: I am commenting as someone who is not familiar with the story line of Phantom of the Opera.

I really loved the poetry in this collection—the author used a lot of beautiful imagery to transport me to another place entirely. It was a place filled with beautiful music and lavish costumes—and fragrant flowers and soft touches against the skin. It's a deep dive into the senses and the emotions to tell a story. I think I would have gotten more from my reading experience if I had been familiar with Phantom of the Opera, but it was enjoyable nonetheless. Highly recommend!

I picked up this book of poems because I was interested in the idea of taking a beloved musical, already filled with such poetry, and pulling more depth and emotion from the lyrics.

The Phantom of the Opera is a beautiful story, so I thought it quite brave of the author to reimagine it. An intriguing idea that is overall executed nicely, I found that poems written with Erik in mind were the most emotive and moving. "I Plucked A Rose" was the highlight for me, mostly because the rhythm flowed effortlessly, and I felt connected to Erik's psyche as the reader.

As with all poetry, I'm always curious how and why a writer decides to write their verse in such ways -- I felt that some of the verses in this collection were a little disjointed, while others sometimes felt the author could have gone deeper with her imagery. In Erik's sections, it seemed we delve below the surface of the character, which I loved. I wish I had felt that during Christine and Raoul's poems.

Overall, if you're a fan of the Phantom of the Opera and poetry, this collection does summarize the musical in a different, intriguing way. Of course, at the mention of famous lines, I had the songs going through my head, which overshadowed my reading experience somewhat. A very creative piece from a talented writer.

I have never been an avid poetry reader but something about this made me want to give it a try. I have seen Phantom of the Opera on TV (the movie and the Broadway show) like every living soul so I thought I would give it a try. It did not disappoint the author makes a great rendition to the Phantom of the Opera it was a fast and captivating read that made me turn every page to absorb the next poem. I love that the author has done different poems that embody different characters and different emotions, you can picture in your head what poem belongs to what scene.
