I really loved the poetry in this collection—the author used a lot of beautiful imagery to transport me to another place entirely. It was a place filled with beautiful music and lavish costumes—and fragrant flowers and soft touches against the skin. It's a deep dive into the senses and the emotions to tell a story. I think I would have gotten more from my reading experience if I had been familiar with Phantom of the Opera, but it was enjoyable nonetheless. Highly recommend!
The Phantom of the Opera is a beautiful story, so I thought it quite brave of the author to reimagine it. An intriguing idea that is overall executed nicely, I found that poems written with Erik in mind were the most emotive and moving. "I Plucked A Rose" was the highlight for me, mostly because the rhythm flowed effortlessly, and I felt connected to Erik's psyche as the reader.
As with all poetry, I'm always curious how and why a writer decides to write their verse in such ways -- I felt that some of the verses in this collection were a little disjointed, while others sometimes felt the author could have gone deeper with her imagery. In Erik's sections, it seemed we delve below the surface of the character, which I loved. I wish I had felt that during Christine and Raoul's poems.
Overall, if you're a fan of the Phantom of the Opera and poetry, this collection does summarize the musical in a different, intriguing way. Of course, at the mention of famous lines, I had the songs going through my head, which overshadowed my reading experience somewhat. A very creative piece from a talented writer.
