Where Are the Tubes?
Ask any guitarist what they want most from an amp and they'll answer with a single word--TONE. That quest for tone drove us to develop our amplifiers. Behringer's proprietary VTC (Virtual Tube Circuitry) gives the AT108 its in-your-face tube amp tone. It's an amp with such rich, harmonic character and buttery tube-like goodness, you'll wonder where we hid the tubes.
Classic Control
This 15-Watt guitar amp is a singer/songwriter's dream come true. The AT108 features an instrument input as well as a mic input, both with their own volume control. Just plug in a dynamic mic and an acoustic guitar, and you're ready to rock the coffee shop. A three-band EQ gives you precise tone-shaping capabilities.
A Little Privacy
If you're not yet ready for primetime, or just need to hold a low-key rehearsal, the AT108 features a 1 /4" input for playing along with your favorite songs, and a headphone input for private jamming.
Built to Last
The AT108's electronic components are built into a robust metal enclosure for maximum protection. The cabinet is made of high-grade wood covered with durable vinyl.

At first, I was wondering if I wasn't hearing the amp since it seemed like the strings were making the sound, but then I realized that the sound coming out of the amp was close enough to the sound from the strings that I couldn't easily tell them apart.
This is a great deal for the price. The size is great for lugging around and the unit's 8" speaker can definitely belt out the sound.
Definitely going to play with the hi/mid/low adjustments to give better balance between the upper and lower ranges from the guitar.
There are cheaper kits out there... but this is a great unit for the price if you don't want any built-in effects and don't want to deal with USB/firmware updates like some of the amps out there.
Note, was deciding between this unit and the KT108, which is a keyboard amp system. The main difference as far as I can tell between the two units, beside the external aesthetics, is the 3 pin XLR input on this one and the second 1/4" input jack on the KT108. With a balanced XLR to 1/4" jack cable or adapter, you would be able to plug in a second guitar. Each input has its own volume dial, which is nice. But the hi/mid/low adjustments is for the output only.
Notes about hiss/hum. I had the unit plugged into a guitar and dialed up to about 5/6 on the instrument volume and I did not hear any his. If the cable plugged in is connected to a loose jack with poor insulation, however, that's when I hear hiss.
Update:
So getting the strings to balance on the output was fairly straightforward: adjust the guitar's outputs so that it's not favoring the bass strings. :) And adjust the amp's outputs so that the hi bands are getting more amplification. I suspect this unit can work with a wide range of instruments, just need to ensure the settings are optimized for your instrument.
We plug their iPod into the input jack (1/4 inch plug meant for a guitar), and they can sing makeshift karaoke with the mic input running at the same time.
You can pretty much be a one man band with this guy. 1 mic input, 1 music input, separate volume adjustments. Someone had their head screwed on when they designed it. In contrast, from the same company, I can't understand what the designer had in mind when they assembled the Behringer GM108 True Analog Modeling 15-Watt Guitar Amplifier . The GM108 seems like a single purpose device only for the guitar. From an input point of view, I would avoid it.
I look forward to many more years of use from this AT108. The multiple inputs makes me confident that when we upgrade their acoustic guitar to an electric, we are ready.
The volume at 3 (of 10) isn't horribly loud, but works for fun. At 8 it holds up well with the volume output. We can hear it on the 2nd floor, and it is in the basement. It is a good 15 watts. I hope it can hold up for the long term. The mic is built like a tank, which is why I went for this brand Amp. Plus, I just didn't have any confidence in what Fender squire products were worth. Fender seems to have bought up every competitor and re-branded them. I'm not certain what I'm getting there.
The microphone and foam covers linked above, plus a cheap mic stand ( Musician's Gear Die-Cast Mic Stand Black ) and a CBI Low Z XLR Microphone Cable, 20 Foot add up to about $52. Combine that with this speaker, and you can put a nice setup together for about $130. Altogether these items make a nice gift set that really sounds way better than you would think. As a parent of young kids, you can also have the peace of mind that each piece (excluding the XLR cable) is quite durable. Thankfully XLR cables are not that expensive on Amazon.
[update 19APR12]
This thing is still going strong after 16 months, while enduring some significant abuse in our play room. It has not had any problems. It still looks brand new. The only hiccups are that the (cheap) XLR cables go bad after a while. I replace it, and all is well again. It isn't the speaker's fault. I have repeatedly heard the cables are the issue across the industry, especially when you buy cheap ones, which I do. The kids sometimes leave it on for days at a time, and it does not seem to affect the Behringer hardware. I have managed to train them to keep the volume below 4, which has been nice for the parents. We still have yet to connect a Guitar to it. I'm confident it will be capable when that day comes.
I also have a real tube amp, a Bugera 5 watt, that was twice as expensive, but it doesn't sound as good as this amp, however the bugera is not geared towards acoustic guitars.
I hook my laptop up to this amp by using a special cable I bought at Radio Shack. I connect the headphone output on my laptop to the CD input on the amp. That way I can play along with songs that I have downloaded. A lot of amps do not have the CD input jack hookup but this does. With my PC, headphones and guitar all connected to this amp, I can be very quite and not disturb the neighbors.
There's no gain adjustment or distortion of any kind but an acoustic guitar player normally doesn't want those, or will have them as low as possible.
I hooked up my electric guitar to this amp, a Squire Strat and an Epiphone hollow body. Surprisingly, the Strat sounded great, but the Epiphone hollow body sounded poor. The Strat sounded like early Beatles. I guess because the early Beatles always used tube amps with no distortion. They also used hollow body guitars with tube amps, like on their song The Night Before. Ah but I digress. The Hollow Body and Strat are not acoustic guitars and not meant to be played on this amp.
My Acoustic Fender Kingman sounds superb with this amp. It sounded better then I expected. It really sounds acoustic and tube like.
So, to sum it up:
The good news: Has tube sound, CD input, you can connect your computer to it.
The downside, the fake leather covering looks cheesy. No Gain or reverb control. Some electric guitars will sound a bit muffled.

Eigentlich waren ja 2 andere Amps in meiner Wunschliste...
