One bag of this, buying a box of 4 bags at a time, costs about $3.50 for 16 oz., but it's organic and from what I've read from reviewers, grown in the U.S. Considering what I could be eating, this is actually a really good deal.
I'm not quite sure what the difference is supposed to be between "regular," steel-cut and rolled, I just know that lately when I went looking for a more sophisticated oatmeal in the store it was like something ultra-special just to get steel-cut, with limited options. Before the oatmeal packets invaded my childhood I remember eating oatmeal that didn't take 3-5 minutes, but something like 15-20 minutes. Where'd that go? Amazon, apparently. I guess anything else is the dust leftover from the special stuff. The instant crud in a packet that I used to eat as a kid certainly looks like dust compared to this stuff.
All I know is that I just wanted something that resembled what the grain looked like coming off the plant. I wanted soft, but textured. All this "fast living" has really flipped the presentation of a simple breakfast grain to the public. No time to cook? Eat mush! It's fast and yummy! Here let us give you tiny packets of dust with added flavor - "special" real (dried) fruit with sugar or how about "maple flavor" WITH real maple. Nah. Turn the TV off, go to bed earlier and wake up in time to cook a good breakfast on the stove. (I haven't had cable in years. $70 buys a lot of maple syrup, oatmeal and used books on Amazon. If I want to pee away my time, I'll do it wandering the internet looking for oatmeal recipes and writing philosophical and snarky reviews that might allow another consumer to perhaps make a more mindful purchase.)
I thought I'd come so far, but just having to sift through the oatmeal trash to find the real deal at this stage in the game has humbled me in my "unlearning process." You go, Bob. Keep it real.
I have been conjuring up a smoothie just about every morning for the past year and the ingredients have seen a great deal of tinkering in that time. There are over a dozen different ingredients in carefully-honed proportions used in my breakfast pick-me-up, and the addition of a half-cup of these oats is the finest upgrade I've enjoyed since October of 2012. My smoothies now come out with an extremely filling, extremely pleasant thickness that complements all of the other ingredients. I have always loved oatmeal, but these oats truly make my smoothies a joy to consume, bringing the consistency to a perfect state of calibration.
Naturally, these oats are fantastic outside of a smoothie as well. I like my oatmeal thick, meaning it takes me more toward the 20-minute end of the spectrum suggested on the packaging to get them to the right consistency, but they have a rich, wholesome taste that makes the wait well worth it. I've even taken to eating the dry oats straight when I want a quick snack.
It certainly doesn't hurt that these oats are certified organic with a robust nutritional profile, and at $2/lb (price as of this review), these oats seem like a great value from where I'm sitting ($16 for 72 servings, which lasts me one to two months).
I really don't have anything negative to say about this product. I suppose it would be nice if I didn't have to clip the product shut, but unless the manufacturer used a lidded container (which would probably drive up the price), I'm not sure how this issue could be corrected. That being said, it's not really a significant complaint, and I'm extremely satisfied with this product, which to my mind delivers on all fronts.
There's no reason to pass up on this wholesome, flavorful addition to your healthy lifestyle.
Thank you.
BUT… it is a very small bag at more than a large bag costs, I didn’t notice that when I ordered. I would keep looking…
