It's been 8 months since I last updated this review, and I thought I would chime in once again. I'm writing this on the tablet itself. It is still going strong. I wrapped it in a nice case and a screen protector, and it has lasted and lasted. There are the occasional (rare) times when I need to restart it, or it crashes (Firefox + Disqus forums seems the culprit). Normal Android stuff. It's rock solid.
I have not regretted the purchase. This thing has gone above and beyond my expectations in durability and quality. It is as slick and smooth as the day I got it. No upgrade to 7.1 at this time.
8 months in with daily use, still highly recommended. This is a very good tablet, folks.
***Update: 7/13/17***
This device just got Android 7.0 (not 7.1 yet), nougat. With this continued support and my excellent impressions let me move this up to five stars. This device is everything a tablet should be. It is a responsive piece of hardware beautifully designed, and at this price it is a love letter to the community.
Android tablets are becoming scarce, they tend to be expensive and a strange middle ground between laptop and phone. This device breaks that mould. It is portable, powerful, and inexpensive. I have it by my side at work. I use it for writing, gaming, and reading. Movies, browsing, and more.
It is truly an excellent device that I look forward to sitting down with.
For all that, I still have yet to see this thing quick charge, but I hear it can. It does have strange incompatibilities with the odd app. 7.0 features multi-app, but this can be unstable for some programs. 7.0 fixes PS4 controller support. Battery life needs to be monitored, some things will slurp right through it. The community doesn't have a way to crack the boot loader, so tinkerers beware. But, I didn't buy it to tinker. I bought it to use it.
It is a joy to use.
Original review:
This is a place holder review for the time being. Four stars. Four stars not because it isn't everything I dreamed it would be, but because I need time to test this thing to it's extremes; to feel genuinely assured of its quality and longevity. Also, four stars because my first impressions are very promising. If this thing can hold up to a week or two of scrutiny, then it will be five.
I received this device about 18 hours ago. The craftsmanship is lovely. The perfect weight for a 9.7" slate made of metal. The rounded edges, the screen. Presentation is paramount, and this device had me with hello.
The software flickered to life. It shipped with a touch more than half battery for me to play with. I begin the familiar process of initializing a new device. The start of a new partnership. I give it the weary eyes. It stares back calmly. No dead pixels, no imperfections. The colors are beautiful through my 'getting to know you' process. So, I take her for a spin. Youtube up.
Hey there music videos. Something flashy, just a touch of corn. Lindsay S. 1080p. Sensory feedback.
The colors are everything they claim to be. Rich, sharp. The viewing angles hold up at just under 180', it looks brilliant and shows no signs of stress with this basic work load. The sound is loud, albeit one-sided with the speakers hanging out bottom. Bass is kicky. Not bad at all. In fact, quite good. I'm impressed.
Performance has another name. How does it act when I overload it with queued downloads and browse the web.
The downloads are going, right? No stutter. The read/write performance to the disk is flawless. I can sense no slow down as it installs apps, downloads them, and flips through some larger web-pages. I leave it alone for a while to finish up.
When I pick the thing back up again around 8 hours have passed. The battery is slightly below half now. Everything has finished downloading, about 44 apps. Just getting started. I boot up Vainglory.
Vainglory is a strenuous game that relies on your internet connection to connect you with five other players. 3 versus 3. It has sharp graphics and twitch-action that requires precision controls. It runs like a dream. I play several matches sequentially. No slow downs. No heat beyond that of my own hand on the smooth metal backing. At this point I've had it plugged in so I can verify quick charge.
No dice there. I'll wait until I have a second quick charger (3.0 support) to test it.
Throughout all of this I have been using the fingerprint recognition to unlock the device. It's so very fast you can't see the notifications pop up on the lock screen. It simply blinks and you're home. Is it just cheesing me? Is it accurate? Other fingers? Meet lock screen.
So, I've got a crush on it. I like the direction this is going. I want to love this device, but I'm not place holding with five stars. Why? Because the bad reviews for this thing are just plain scary. A week, a month, the reboots, the broken-on-arrival SD tray (I still need to test this). I shouldn't have to be terrified it isn't going to work out. If it survives my paces, I'll be back to give it that prodigal star. But, until then, I'm cautious. I wish I didn't have to be.
What surprised me is how close the specs on this tablet are to my Transformer ASUS TF701T-B1-GR 10.1-Inch Tablet really, my favorite tablet. Virtually unobtainable now, that tablet was way ahead of it's time, with a 1.9 ghz Tegra 4 and 2560 x 1600 screen resolution, it is par with the specs of last year's surface pro, though ASUS released the 701 in 2012! The 701 is a premium tablet, and in many ways more comparable to the Zenbook than the Zenpad, especially with the addition of the dock. It is my preferred device when I travel and often used at home, but while very compact for a laptop replacement, it is heavier than I want to carry in my purse day to day.
When I noticed that the screen resolution on the 3s is actually lower than on my transformer I considered returning it but am keeping it because:
1) it is lighter and less bulky
2) has comparable battery life and storage without an added dock
3) both front and rear cameras are much improved
4) the processor, though only slightly faster (2.1 vs 1.9) is multi-threaded
5) considerably more ram (4G vs, 1)
6) comparable build and finish level in a budget tablet!
I suspect that few people are comparing this to the 701, as it is near impossible to get at this point (and, I will add, not my first ASUS tablet which has increased in value with age)! A couple of years ago I returned both the Lenovo Miix and Nvidea shield because the Transformer was a better tablet (in the case of the miix, in every way; in the case of the shield, it was screen resolution). The Zenpad 3s is a premium tablet at a budget price, comparables costing double what it costs. )If money is no object you can get a *slightly* better tablet, albeit for a good deal more). It is a single piece of aircraft grade aluminum, textured for a good grip. The screen resolution is excellent, a "retina quality" display, again at half the price. It has a tough Corning Gorilla glass display and a fingerprint scanner that really works (as opposed ot the one on my HTC 1 max). Like their smartwatches it is a quickcharge device, charging in less than half the time of other tablets. It is snappy with no lag or skipping (in interactive games and streaming video) and doesn't groan under the burden of multiple tasks. The availability of an active pen ASUS Z Stylus for ZenPad (Z580CA; Z300C/CG/CL; Z500M) adds a feature not available on my 701, or any other tablet in this price range. The one downside is that it is so popular I would not hold my breath waiting for it to go on sale. I waited until after the holidays and then had to wait a month to get the one I ordered from Amazon. Wait too long and I expect to see something like what we are seeing with the ASUS ZenPad S 8 Z580CA-C1-BK 8" 64 GB Tablet and the 701, price gauging (by third parties) on sold out products. I might have preferred the z580 as this was replacing an 8" tablet but personally much prefer the peace of mind I have purchasing from Amazon vs. an unknown marketplace seller, so I opted for the 3s.
The primary reason that I am writing this review is to point to a beautifully made (genuine) leather cover, made for the ipad, which works pretty well with this tablet. The KAVAJ "London" case KAVAJ iPad Air 2 leather case cover "London" black - genuine leather with stand-up feature including stylus. Thin Smart Cover as premium accessory for the original Apple iPad Air 2 is a perfect fit with cutouts in the right places. but for the headphone jack (though I wish the opening for the camera lens were a bit larger). Remarkably, in some ways it fits the zenpad better than the ipad since it grips the edge leaving the screen unblocked, but on the ipad exposes an inch of plastic on either end "to show off the color," white). It is currently out of stock at Amazon, but I would recommend watching for it or looking at their other cases for the air 2 and ipad pro,, as the dimensions are only a fraction of an inch off, and KAVAJ makes products worthy of housing an ASUS premium tablet, an excellent quality product at a very good price for the quality.
This is at least the 5th ASUS tablet I have purchased. I had to look back in my Amazon history to find the first, my eebook, purchased in 2008, and still running! I am a huge fan of ASUS products, and for good reason.
Top reviews from other countries
One aspect I did not understand was the wild swings in price of this product, over just a few days. I managed to buy it at an excellent price in Canada, and the next day the price rose 30% . I can only conclude that demand for this high quality tablet is rising fast. So far so good, I am a happy consumer.
The delivery of the package is another thing. Delivery guy left in on my front porch in view of the entire street. He made no attempt to see if anyone was home. Left it and walked away and it's all on security video. If a signature is required then whats the point. Amazon you need to review your delivery service in Toronto Ontario. If you order fast delivery you get poor service.
