Product Description
The 17-35mm f/2.8-4 Di OSD (model a037) is an ultra-wide-angle lens featuring superb image quality integrated into a compact, lightweight body. The use of specialized glass materials enables comprehensive control of the axial chromatic aberrations conspicuous in ultra-wide-angle lenses. The model a037 offers a high level of sharpness and contrast comparable to the very best of lenses. From the 35mm standard wide-angle for user-friendly snapshot photography, to the ultra-wide-angle 17mm used for professional landscape photography, this lens can meet a wide variety of your needs and yet still offer amazing portability being only 90mm (3.5 in) in length, 83.6mm in diameter, and just 460G (16.2 oz.) in weight. With a minimum object distance (MOD) of only 0.28M (11 in), opening the aperture while approaching the subject lets you blur the background. Wide enough to encompass the entire landscape, the model a037 lets you capture the thrill of the moment in each and every image you shoot.

Never used this lens for anything but 17mm, but it still requires carrying around everything required to go to 35mm, which is a pain. The manual focus ring just flops in the breeze. Manual focus is used all the time at 17mm, since you're always trying to get as close as possible & it's a pain to keep the ring pinned down. Wish there was a way to keep the motor engaged in manual mode, as a form of drag, or maybe tell the camera not to drive focus when the lens is in autofocus.
The zoom ring is a bit tighter, but is a hassle to manage if you're just using it at 17mm. I use the faster F1.8 prime for 28mm. The color on the Tamron is not as vibrant as the F1.8 & the F1.8 is smaller, even though the F1.8 has famously bad chromatic aberration.
Among cheap ultrawides, there's also the Yongnuo 14mm F2.8. I don't own one, but Chinese lenses are apparently improving fast. It's 1/2 pound heavier than the Tamron & slightly bigger according to the internets, but it's cheaper & those 3 extra mm allow more artistic possibilities.

Many other RF Tamron lenses have rescinded firmware updates for R comparability, this one got discontinued.
I like the RF mount on teh RP as it allows use with the veritable ND filter. Great for wide angle log exposure shooting.
To solve this lenses poor performance I rotate the lens to disconnect the contacts.
I would check out other options before buying this lens.
