I have used the built-in milk steaming wand, and it does exactly what it should, but, as previously mentioned, I use a separate frother so the milk is done simultaneously while I pull the shots (three for me, and three for the spouse).
It’s gotten to the point where I can now make the cappuccino so exactly how I like it that most coffee shops have lost their appeal because their coffee just doesn’t taste as good as mine. This machine is turning me into a coffee snob. I don’t care though. It’s worth it. I honestly don’t know why people buy those super expensive fancy machines when the ones like this do the same thing??? This one is possibly even better because it doesn’t have any finicky delicate inner workings.
Some notes: do hand wash the thing the espresso goes in (don’t know what it’s called), and, don’t immerse the handle in water. It is hollow and it will fill with water and it doesn’t drain quickly. I always set it on its side after washing so any water can drain overnight. Dishwater sloshing out of the handle when trying to make espresso is a bit unappetizing.
Also, don’t use the machine when the water reservoir is on empty (this one is probably obvious). It doesn’t like it. It takes a while for it to recover and forgive you for doing that. I now make it a habit to always add water when I turn it on just to be safe.
Anyway. I love this machine. If something happens to this one, I would buy the exact same one again.
If you can work simple machinery and like espresso/cappuccino from freshly ground beans, get this machine and enjoy.
If you are a bit lazy and prefer everything to be automatic and are the type to use "pods", do not get this machine.
It does make nice coffee and lattes. In the two hundred dollars price range is one of the better options.
EDIT: If you want the best coffee, get a non pressurized basket for this machine, get whole beans and use a grinder to grind the coffee, preground is not the best for espressos.
If I knew how big of a difference having a good grinder and non pressurized basket, I would have done it when I got the machine.
Though is easy to use, pls note these, I am not sure these are in the instructions.
* DO NOT TAMP WITH TOO MUCH FORCE and/or too fine coffee. You gotta remember the BASKETS ARE ALREADY PRESSURIZED and tamping too hard will take a toll on the pump. Also do not use too much force on the handle when putting coffee.
* Try different coffee grinds and roasts, until you find what best suits your taste.
* DO NOT store away with the basket or frother wand dirty. Clean before you store to prevent coffee or milk from getting hard on the surface and damage (because components will work harder and coffee will not taste the same)
* Check the drip tray every now and then.
* If you will preheat cups in the cup warmer tray, turn on the machine at least 10 minutes before you use it. It is a passive warmer so it needs time to preheat the warmer. Coffee does not need that long.
* Do not underfill. Put coffee even with the surface and tamp it. Do not use too little coffee.
The first one I had came defective and they replaced it a new one.
It has its pros and cons. I will get the cons out of the way.
* Tank is small, at least for my needs.
* Temperature is not as consistent as I would like. Sometimes my coffee is all right. Sometimes a little lower temperature than I expect. Never too hot.
* When removing water thank you have to wiggle with the intake hoses. it is not a big deal, but it is annoying
* Baskets are pressurized. No option for non-pressurized basket included
* A little big. For such a big machine, it should have come with a bigger
* Plastic made. machine is mostly plastic, except the heating tray (passive). Tank feels like if you drop it, it will break.
* It is not possible to repair. in my case something stopped working. They use special screws with very long and fine tunnel so I had to make my own tool to get inside. Once inside, it is hard to replace the pump.
Now the pros:
* Easy to use. Put some coffee in the basket. lightly tamp it and pour coffee. You can use pre-ground coffee from the market. I love dark roast on this thing.
* Great for beginner and excellent entry level machine.
* Fast. It does not take long to operate.
* Milk frother has plastic outside. I am not sure is a pro or con, but in my case it helped me prevent getting burned.
After some experience, and learning about coffee and grinds, I am not sure I will buy again. not being able to repair it is disappointing.
For the my first espresso machine, it made me love espresso. so I recommend for beginners.
Top reviews from other countries
Pros:
- the cheapest option with everything in one, and don't think I'm compromising on taste
- doesn't take up too much space
- makes good coffee and with de-scale maintenance every 3-4 months, machine works really well
- very easy to clean all the parts
Cons
- hard to dump out coffee because of the way the filter holder is designed
- coffee tamper is not great, had to buy it separately
- the tray is just about perfect for an espresso and cap, but wish it was easy enough to sneak in a normal-sized mug under there
The only reason I would sub this out for a better machine is to (1) have a grinder built in and (2) coffee filter holder that's easier to dump out
