Leather and Lace: Book One of the Southern Gothic Series Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 85 ratings

Falling in love with a vampire bites—and sometimes loving a human bites back.

Dorian Villeneuve is an unlucky vampire from the slums of Devil’s Row. He makes ends meet for himself and his emotional support Chihuahua by working sleazy bars and nightclubs, doing what it takes to get by. Cash Leroy is a monster hunter from East Texas with a golden voice and an unrivaled devotion to Stevie Nicks. Hunting does not leave time for friends, let alone love.

When their paths cross during a bloody run-in with the vampire mob, Cash upends Dorian’s life—and takes Dorian under his wing to teach how to hunt monsters. The unlikely pair become partners, and soon, best friends. However, their deepening bond grows complicated when Dorian falls in love with Cash. Their friendship is too important to throw away over an interspecies attraction, especially in a career that is already nasty, brutish, and short.

And things become even more complicated when Cash finds himself returning the vampire’s affections.

When an unusually deadly case lands in the hunters’ laps, their ill-fated affair takes a backseat. A pair of man-eating weredeer are on the loose taking victims’ hearts. With the pressure on to end the killing spree, Dorian and Cash must set aside their feelings and hunt down the blood-thirsty deer. Can Dorian and Cash’s friendship survive this monstrous romance, or will they lose their hearts in the process?

Originally seen in the Eisner-nominated TWISTED ROMANCE anthology from IMAGE COMICS, this is the full-length adaptation of the critically acclaimed short story.

I pre-ordered this book after hearing about it online. What fun! While I do love paranormal romance, the genre doesn't always work for me. The Southern Gothic Series VERY MUCH does. Cubed's world is nicely fleshed out for a first book in a series, and I find myself endlessly curious about her supernatural species and their modern society. I was really excited when the book touched on modern vampire religion. While some aspects of the supernatural world are less developed (supernatural creatures feel common in the book, but human society is primarily unaware of them, which feels odd), Cubed has noted herself online that she plans to expand on this in future stories. And she even gives a good reason for the issue: as a vampire and a hunter, both of our main characters are on the fringes of human society.

On to the story... before reading I read the Love Bites anthology. Cubed pulls the best bits out of her anthology and spins a full length novel. I enjoyed reading scenes I'd read previously, but that felt expanded upon and new. What's best is that when Leather and Lace starts, Cash and Dorian have been hunting together for nearly six months. Flashbacks in the book take us back to their first meeting and to their early and difficult days of hunting together. This story is not a who-dun-it, the book tells us in POV chapters from our 'villains' who-dun-it, but I didn't feel like that lessoned my experience. The climatic ending is very exciting and suspenseful. The romance is also delicious, and I so appreciated Dorian's backstory explaining his trust issues. Both characters do hard emotional work, and the sensual, erotic passages are excellent and very steamy.

THIS BOOK!
THIS!
BOOK!

Why is the entire world not raving about this book? I loved every single page of this story. I would defend Dorian with my life. He's such an emotionally battered sweetheart and I love him with my whole heart. Cash, too, of course. I wanted to duct tape them together at certain times in the story and MAKE THEM TALK. But the pain was so good and so worth it.
And that plot?! Monster hunters are so hit or miss with me but this was handled so wonderfully. It was never cornball or silly-in-a-bad-way. I just.. would like to own every book by Magen Cubed right this instant please because I'm hooked now.

I greatly enjoyed watching Cash and Dorian become friends, partners, and eventually lovers. The world where humans and monsters meld is intriguing, and I look forward to more with these two.

This is such a fun world, and I adore how the characters are just completely themselves. They know who they are, they mostly like themselves, and they have *fun* together which to me is key for successful sex scenes. If you can't laugh together, you're doing it wrong. The vampire/monster hunter angle is great, and the smart, occasionally snarky tone of the author keeps things moving right along. Reccomended

I love this book. I live the charaters and how fully fleshed out they are. I love how well the pacing flows and how smooth it runs. This is a well told monster hunt that feels more well done than most TV shows I've seen.
The characters themselves are solid and fully formed, and the way they are described and react feels both realistic and fantastic in its own turns.
I cannot wait for this universe to be expanded upon and I await the further adventures of this vampire, his emotional support chihuahua and the endlessly loving human who chose him.

Cash and Dorian are SUPER relatable, Dorian especially. I love the weredeer aspect, honestly that's what compelled me to read the novel in the first place. Cannibal weredeer? I'm here for it.

Serious though, Cash and Dorian had me howling, they're great. Hilarious even. Their banter is top notch.

I received an advance review copy for free from BookSirens, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This book has been a fun, engaging romp of a ride mixing supernatural elements with a bit of mystery thrown in. If you are a fan of Supernatural then I suggest you give this book a shot.

The strongest point of the story for me are the characters. I really loved the interaction between the two main leads. Cash and Dorian are quite interesting and their personalities shine through when they play off each other. The writer did a great job in showing us the history between them through the flash back chapters interspersed within the book. Both feel real with their doubts, fears, joys and sadness.

The pacing is also wonderfully done. Each chapter reads fluidly with just a bit of occasional hiccups but those times does not lessen one's enjoyment for the story.

The will they won't they got frustrating at times, but it makes sense within the premise of the backstory for Dorian and Cash.

Dorian's insecurity and his need to just run from a commitment is just sad when you get to know the reason behind it. Though there are times when I just really want to throttle him and make him see sense.

Cash is charming, down to earth and an utterly adorable protective guy over those he really care about. You can clearly see from the first parts from the book on how utterly smitten he is and yet how he just respects the boundaries that Dorian has set. I hurt for him during the times that he thought that he has lost Dorian.

The lore of the story is very interesting and the fact that the vampires and shifters in these are not shown in the usual light of richness, glitz and glamor is intriguing. However, I would've wanted to see more of things related to the inhabitants of this world. Are vampires just born or are they made? Are there still alphas in the were communities? How did they evolve to be like this?

Also, the general plot of the story feels like an episode of a tv series with the usual monster of the week kind of thing. It's a bit flimsy for my taste but still it did its job.

Overall, Magen Cubed was able to craft an enjoyable story with some charming and interesting characters with a world worth you wish the author would explore more.

I give this book 4 out of 5 stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars An interesting spin on conventional vampire novels

This book is like coming out of fresh breath for all the vampire lovers out there. The world building is amazing. The story is super engaging till the last page.

I loved the fact that even though the main character vampire suffered from anxiety, just made the story more relatable and nuanced.

I liked the fact there was minimal romance angle to the story. It was more centered around crime fighting, with a very unusual duo of a cowboy hunter and a vampire.

However, one thing that didn't work for me was the fact that it was hard to switch from one character to the other in the same chapter. Character changes within one chapter made it difficult for me to follow at time.

All in all it was a pleasant read.

5.0 out of 5 stars An intriguing and heartfelt story

There's so much I enjoyed about this book. The world-building is fantastic and Magen Cubed has written a story that pulls you in. This book takes the idea of vampires and other monsters and puts a fresh spin on it, and it feels like there are layers more to discover. I was fascinated with how this world works, and the way that monster societies try to exist alongside the humans they are separated from. Most of all, I enjoyed the interactions between characters. The messy, heartfelt and believable relationship between Cash and Dorian is portrayed well, with some great characterisation to help the reader better understand their actions. As well as this, other characters felt fully-realised, adding depth to the narrative. On a personal note, I greatly appreciated the portrayal of anxiety through the character of Dorian. It is refreshing to see a representation of this that feels realistic.

I cannot wait to read more in this series!

adore this book! Magen is such a sharp writer who handles her characters with both a lot of care and understanding and also regularly throws them off the deep end. A delight to read. If you like sweet cowboys, funny monsters, and queers, this is a book you need to read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful paranormal romance
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 13, 2021
This book is wonderful. I absolutely fell in love with the main characters. Dorian was an absolute delight and Cash is just a sweetheart. The plot is straightforward but doesn't feel simple. It's a formulae anyone that's seen Supernatural will be familiar with but it doesn't feel stale or like a rip off. There is enough of Magen's own voice in there for it to feel familiar but distinct. It's also queer as hell in a way that seeps into the whole text in the best ways. It's clearly written by someone familiar with how being gay influences your life and relationships beyond the obvious and I just absolutely love it.

If you want a pulpy paranormal romance then you won't be disappointed with this novel.

4.0 out of 5 stars I need more Cash & Dorian

There are some spoilers in my review. So skip it & read the other reviews.

I loved this book. It has a completely different take on Vampires.
Usually when you get Vampires you get Werewolves (there is a mention of werewolves) and the likes but with this book you get Weredeer and I’m here for it.

The 2 main characters Cash, a human and Dorian a Vampire (with an emotional support dog Dominique, because anxiety)

Cash is a Hunter and goes after Monsters that attack humans.
After saving Cash’s life, Dorian ends up being Cash’s partner and becomes a Monster Hunter too.

These 2 are fantastic. They unexpectedly & inevitably fell in love but were afraid to confirm their feelings towards each other thinking that neither was good enough for the other.

I’m glad Dorian had his friend Marcy who he could go and talk to about his feelings for Cash. He needed a kick in the ass to realise that he has something good with Cash and that he does deserve it, especially with what happened in his past.

I am so looking forward to more in this series.
