Product Description

On Blu-ray -- the visually bold and striking DICK TRACY packs a wallop with picture and sound as sharp as Tracy's jaw. Imaginative performances color this extraordinary action flick directed by and starring Oscar(R) winner Warren Beatty (Best Director, REDS, 1981), Grammy-winning singer Madonna, Oscar nominee Al Pacino (Best Supporting Actor, DICK TRACY, 1990) and Oscar winner Dustin Hoffman (Best Actor, RAIN MAN, 1988). When gang lord Big Boy Caprice unites the town's racketeers and gangsters, police detective Dick Tracy devotes his career to foiling the entire bunch of bad guys. Complete with richly evocative music -- including Stephen Sondheim's Academy Award(R)-winning "Sooner or Later (I Always Get My Man)" (Best Original Song, 1990), DICK TRACY is a stunner in Hi-Def Blu-ray.

Great looking/sounding Blu-ray, but a shame we still can't get any extras.

Great looking/sounding Blu-ray, but a shame we still can't get any extras.
Dick Tracy, probably the most unique comic book film I've ever seen. True to form, the costumes and sets come in bright, bold, primary colors like those found only in the comic strip, itself. Although the story is pretty standard good-versus-evil fare, the substance to the film's exemplary style are the engaging performances by Warren Beatty as Tracy and Al Pacino as his nemesis, Big Boy Caprice. Coming on the heels of Tim Burton's darker and slicker Batman, I believe people were quick to draw comparison, despite this being a different, more Saturday-matinee stylized film. Although critically not as well-received as Batman, it still apparently went on to win 3 Oscars.Although I owned it on DVD, I picked up the Blu-ray because the film's visuals are exactly the reason to watch this film on the HD-medium. As expected, I noticed the colors pop more vibrantly and with better balance thanks to being in 1080p. Although the image can be a little soft in terms of sharpness at times, I believe this may have been intentional on Beatty's part, as it's pretty prevalent throughout.Sound is appropriately bombastic in 5.1 DTS-HD. Most notably, the scene in the boiler room where the pipes burst with steam get some good rear-speaker activity. Sondheim's jazzy song-and-dance numbers have robust dynamics, and of course, anything involving Tommy-guns promises to be loud and lively. At least my incentive here for picking this up again were the additional language track options - French (which I want to learn), Spanish (which I am improving), and Russian (not at the moment, but maybe in the future?).Unfortunately, like with the DVD, we get a bare-bones Blu-ray, save for some theatrical/home video previews from 2012. Given the legal wranglings the Dick Tracy property has been under for some time, I presume maybe that has something to do with it. However, I was able to find some interviews and the like on YouTube. Still, given this was one of Beatty's pet projects, I'm surprised he hasn't been able to contribute a commentary track at the least. Overall, if you appreciate the film, the Blu-ray is the way to go. Casual fans may just want to rent, or get a digital copy.

When I first found out that this movie was finally on DVD I knew I had to go get it. "Dick Tracy" is a first rate action comedy classic with an all star cast that brings comic book characters to life in this entertaining spectacle that's fun for the entire family. As an active movie goer myself, after seeing it for the first time as a kid with my mom and my cousin it's still a joy to watch even after all these years. Looking back on that fun time in my life I was a big fan of the "Dick Tracy" franchise; so much so that I even got some of the action figures like "Dick Tracy" his partner Sam Catch Em' and of course Big Boy and one of his gangsters. And who can forget the Nintendo game and the Loony Toonish cartoon that followed the release of the live action film. Those were the days.
The film takes place in the long and forgotten era of the 1930's where sleek long hooded antic cars, extravagant suits and lavish party dresses were the exception and the outlawed necessity of the Tommy gun set against the backdrop of crime ridden streets was the rule of a menacing criminal element. The story follows the tense and sometimes romantic exploits of its hero, top cop detective Dick Tracy as he struggles to rid the city he has vowed to protect from the vice like grip of terror orchestrated by a belligerent and cunning mob boss known throughout the city as, "Big Boy" as he and his thugs launch a crime wave of racketeering, intimidation and murder. When the call comes over his wrist watch radio Detective Tracy is always on hand to answer it no matter where he is or what he's caught up in the middle of. It doesn't matter whether he's at the Opera or having a touching conversation with his love interest when duty calls Dick has to go. Actor and Director Warren Beatty plays the title roll opposite of Al Pacino who plays his arch nemesis, "Big Boy". Both deliver powerhouse performances in this movie, everyone else is also perfectly cast for their unique rolls as their characters begin to take on personalities of their own. Another unique character in this film is one that takes on a double roll throughout the story, "Breathless Mahoney" played by Madonna is a charming fire cracker of a character who often tries to manipulate Tracy during his investigation, covers Big Boy as the lead singer at a nightclub that his gang has taken over and shadows sinister criminal activities as her alter ego the mysterious "Blank" a trench coat and top hat dark figure that hides in the back alleys and dark corners lying in wait to spring a surprise attack that leaves those she encounters stumped as to the lone figure's existence.
I agree with what the previous reviewer posted about the film. This film was made for DVD simply because of the great sound that the stereo produces during some of the more action packed sequences in the movie such as, shoot outs, drive by shootings and a car bombing. In all, this film has something for everybody. A great storyline, character dialogue and development along with a good film score and soundtrack. For those who might worry about what their kids might get out of this film, this isn't your typical cop drama as opposed to some of the more violent films that have preceded it. There's very little in the way of foul language, graphic violence or censored sex. If anything its one of the more tame cop movies that's actually come out over the years and it makes for a great flick for the whole family to sit down and enjoy. As far as the DVD itself, I would have liked to have seen some behind the scenes features and cast interviews because it's always interesting to see how something that's now a classic got put together in the first place. For the critics I'll give this film a 9/10 but definitely worth the time to watch.

Like an earlier reviewer so cleverly said, the less you know about the strip, the more you'll enjoy the film!

"Dick Tracy" is not a movie about the strip, but about the memories it evokes. Unfortunately, you'll have to be eighty years old to have those! (the Tracy I recall was a boring TV cartoon that flew around in a trashcan). And chances are even so your memory will trick you, for the strip itself was anything BUT "nice clean fun".

A failed masterpiece that -literally- ended up in the moon, "Dick Tracy" was in its heyday a cartoonist's personal crusade against organized crime. Outraged by the murder of fellow Chicago journalist Jake Lingle (who turned out to be corrupt), cartoonist Chester Gould created Tracy as his way of exposing criminals for what they were, and what should be done with them. For him, they were the scum of the earth: human souls of such deformity, it even reflected on their features. Thus there was no joke on The Brow's brow, or on Flattop's flat top. These guys were not ugly villains, but true human monsters.

Confident of its Law & Order moral framework, the strip had no qualms about depicting sordid situations (sons murdering their parents, lovers quarrels with knives, villains getting impaled, victims beheaded, teenagers drowned, etc.), much to the delight of its millions of young readers. Today,"political correctness" would make such a comic strip unthinkable, but back then no one thought of it that way. People saw it as a simple Good vs. Evil moral story, where bad guys are ugly and good guys always win. "Nice clean fun".

And that's just what appears in the movie. A bland and predictable story, sugarcoated in eye candy. It's all make believe visual nostalgia in bright colors and retro cars. Lots of fedoras, spats, tommy-guns and badges, in a fantasy 1930's American city full of newsboys wearing caps, sodajerks in bowties, Chinamen with pigtails, and elevated trains against the sunset. Shanties swing when hosting fistfights, boilers tremble before they explode, calligraphy gets written with bullets, and entire gangs fly through the air if they face Tracy up front. To top it all, there's an all star cast in outlandish makeup, several catchy Stephen Sondheim songs, and even a Madonna nipple if you look for it. Enjoy!

P.S.: To most older people, Ralph Byrd was THE Dick Tracy of the movies. Actually, he sucked! Warren Beatty does an acceptable performance here, but nothing to write home about. Me, I always thought Robert Stack had Dick Tracy in mind when he portrayed Eliot Ness. "The Untouchables" itself is closer to the spirit of the Tracy comic strip than this movie is. As for looks, Victor Mature would have made the ideal silver screen Tracy. Alas, he never played the part.

5.0 out of 5 stars A visual masterpiece!

i remember the 1990 summer movie season growing up.There was something very special about it.I think it's because 1989 had been a huge year for movies with hollywood starting to get at ease with creating huge blockbuster action movies that came out every summer.Either original movies or also lots of sequels.1989 seemed to be year that really started it with movies like Indiana Jones and the last crusade,Lethal Weapon 2,Ghostbusters 2,Back to the future part 2,Honey i shrunk the kids,Star Trek 5,The karate kid part 3,James Bond licence to kill,The Abyss,Tango and cash just to name a few but 1990 seemed to be the year that put the full pedal on the whole thing and then going foward every summer afterwards just got bigger and bigger. And advertising also got bigger and more in your face about thoses big movies. But the summer of 1990 had a few big movies that you couldnt go anywhere without hearing advertising about it.And one of them was Dick Tracy with Warren Beatty. An extremely stylish adventure from Disney directed by Warren Beatty and starring among others a roaster of big stars including Madonna and Al Pacino.I remember being excited about getting the vhs when it came out.It was one of several summer movies i wanted to buy and see. When i did end up seeing the movie i remember liking it well enough. What really delivered for me back then at first viewing was the stunning visuals of the movie.Mostly the make up of the bad guys and especially the use of matte paintings to create the city shots.Watching it today now on this bluray i'm still stunned at how beautifull it all looks. The colors are in your face gorgeous.Just like when i watched it back then i find the story seems a little thin but then again its based on a comic strip and Beatty i guess wanted it to feel exactly like the comic strip so i guess you can't be too harsh on the story being a little thin. The real star here is the visual and that really delivers fully.Danny Helfman who did the score the previous year for Batman 1989 does a great job here again even if this score is less memorable than the Batman one.Madonna is a bit laughable in here but then again the role she plays fits her well.Beatty is well suited to play Dick Tracy he's got a great jawline like the comic strip character.Al pacino is lots of fun as the bad guy and kinda steals the show. The make up on the rest of some of the bad guys is stunning make up work.I believe it won an Oscar that year.Anyways hadnt watched the film in a while but i still enjoyed it as a visual masterpiece and one of Disney's best blockbuster of years past. This bluray looks amazing. Its a surprisingly great transfer of an old catalogue title. No DNR at all was used and it seems to really be a transfer true to the source. There is great details in close ups and nice texture and light film grain that looks natural.Colors are great and vibrant. This is how i remember Dick Tracy looking when the film came out except it looks better cause its in HD.Too bad Disney didnt include any extras at all.I guess they dont care much for this film. With all the work that was put into making this movie a huge full lenght documentary should have been included. The audio mix for the movies is also pretty good. There is good panning effects in the front stage.I dont have side surround speakers so i can't comment on surround action but i can imagine there must be some in this mix since the front stage speakers were active enough for a movie this old.Anyways if you like the movie get the bluray it looks real good.
