With these special crimpers it takes a fraction of the time an no soldering over it required.
The portion on the far side in the pics, which holds the hooked part of the anderson contact, is plastic and is held on with an extended length screw which holds the dies in the crimper. These screws use a 3/32 inch allen key. I have used aftermarket dies within these crimpers.
i have used these crimpers, with the plastic portion removed, to crimp regular yellow blue or red terminals whose insulation I have removed.
Will the regular 'Butt cheek' crimp dies, sold in some racheting crimper kits, for the same price as this tool, work to crimp anderson powerpoles? I believe so, but one would have to insure the hooked business end of the Anderson contacts to not twist during crimping and pay more attention to the depth of the contact in the crimp dies, and especially on the 45 amp contacts.
To get these to make th best possible crimps, one needs to slightly rotate the conacts in the die so that when closing the arms of the 45's are folded
in equally on both sides.
The 15 and 30 amp anderson contacts can be crimped well enough without these specialized crimpers, those with many crimp tools and skills and experience can likely attain satisfactory crimps without this tool. I put myself in the skilled enough category, but still had a few 45 amp contacts pull off the wire, which had me start soldering over them which is time consuming and takes some practice to keep the solder from the hooked portion of the contact.
This tool is almost required for someone with little to no experience crimping, and especially so the 45 amp contacts on 10AWG wire. I probably should have gotten them sooner and saved some time and effort.
What this offers is indexing for the powerpole pins. The crimp is in the right place, and there is a perpendicular crimp spot at the correct spot for the locking tab.
I collect compression tools (odd perhaps, but everyone needs a hobby), I have over 25 tools that would put a good crimp on the anderson 45 series contacts. This is simply the 'right' tool, and it makes the connection 'idiot proof'. Some day in the future, I will get the anderson branded >$300 tool. But this tool is not a 80% solution, it works.
Yes, it is a generic anderson die set in a nice generic frame, and I did put a shim in it, but the crimp would have been fine without it.
I was expecting another typical 'B' crimp, the index next in the picture looks almost like a shadow. The nests are correctly sized and placed.
It is as good as any non-oem tool I own, and better than most.
Bought this AFTER pliers-crimping or soldering most of the Powerpoles that I needed to set up my ham shack. But after reading the reviews for this product, thought I would give it a try. Why didn't I buy this sooner? It works great! Perfect crimp the first time I used it.
So now that I have the tool, I'll never go back to my old methods. Remember, the right tool makes the job go much better.
