AD700s vs AD900xs and other info
I stepped up from my Audio Technica AD700s. I had them for six years and I tripped over the cord breaking the jack. Although I will be repairing my AD700s, I never was 100% satisfied with them. The 700s were the first headphones I had with an emphasis on soundstage, and at this point, I will never go to something with significantly reduced soundstage. It's my main draw, along with other qualities, of course. The 700s were bright, and in a lot of ways were too bright for me. I think it is because of the lack of bass on the 700s. I'm not talking about being a bass-head (I'm not), but a lack of a whole frequency which made the emphasis naturally fall on the mids and then the highs.I was skeptical that the 900xs would be a step up. Most people said it was the 700 only a better quality. That translated to me: a tiny bit more bass and now more of what I wasn't already satisfied with. But, even without burn-in, it is apparent that they are higher quality and not the same cans. I am going to be getting an amp soon, but that hasn't been as big of an issue for me since I have a Asus Xonar DX to help with equalizing and boosting some frequencies.I really do like these cans! They actually have bass! If you've ever had/tried the 700s, there was no bass, really. What was there, was tight and punchy and I didn't mind it. But the 900xs retain a lot of the punch and tightness of the 700s while kicking bass up to where it should really be (waiting to see if burn in helps. but it isn't as tight and punchy as I would like yet). Yet, there isn't too much bass for a guy like me who appreciates bass, but doesn't like it overpowering everything else.It still retains the airy nature of I've come to love in my Audio Technica open phones. Jazz is amazing in these. They are bright (I still want to get some open phones that are warmer, but I do like the brightness. I guess I better save for those Senn 650s!). But unlike the 700s, it is a much more neutral sound. It just all goes together! The 700s felt very focused on the mids. I did like that and might use the 700s for movies every once in a while. However, the 900xs are just a much more balanced headphone.Note: I did not like the clamping force at first, but it "broke in" within a week to be super comfy like my 700s. But at first it was a lot more pressure compared to the 700s. Mind you, I have a really big head! Someone with a smaller head would probably like that it stays on your head well enough. People with smaller heads would like the 900xs better than 700s I would think. People with big heads would like both the fit of the 700s and 900xs. To give an example, my seven year old son couldn't wear the 700s without holding it on his head with at least one hand. The 900xs just stay there and he can game away listen to music and whatnot without them slipping off. I think that's actually a huge plus for the 900Xs, that they can become equally comfortable for a someone with a big head and with someone with a small head.Edit: July 18, 2015: After a few months of use, I can say they are amazing headphones. But the clamping force is NOT as comfy as the AD700s. They are by no means horrid, and they have broken in a bit more, but I can get a little fatigued after about two hours time. So I will take back that they are just like the 700s. Mind you, I have a big head, this will not apply to everyone.Edit: August, 2015: I hardly notice the clamping force of the phones now. They stay on without crushing my skull. I have a big head 7 5/8 hat size. I actually do not feel the pressure in a negative sense anymore. I also have slight issues with my tmj muscles which are very sensitive. It hurt them at first, and now I have no issues with these headphones.Edit: June, 2017: The left wing of the headphones (the wing is the part that rests on the top of your head) has broken. The headphones were not dropped, indeed, even a drop would be unlikely to damage the wings. Over time, the spring-loaded wing must have stressed the plastic it was housed in. Upon looking at the break, I can see what appears to be a rather silly choice for the headphone, to attach the wing by screwing it directly into plastic. Really? A wing that will have a spring pushing against it rather firmly for its life is going to be attached to plastic? And couple that with the fact that you will put pressure on it while wearing it, adjusting it, taking it on and off... well... I have problems with the build quality. All in all, Audio Technica staff were very respectful and started the return process spectacularly fast--thank you Tip--it isn't worth it to me to send it in for repairs, when I can buy a new one. And while the repair would give the cans a new left wing, how long until the right wing breaks off too? And yes... I was just a couple months over the warranty... of course.I still love the quality of these headphones' sound signature. They are great, and sound amazing. The build quality is suspect and I cannot support these phones fully anymore. Below are pictures of the break and you can see where the small screw fits into the plastic housing which snapped off due to what was likely stress over time.
