INTRODUCTION

It’s hard to say when I first began keeping a journal, but it was probably in high school. I remember spending nights avoiding my homework, writing and doodling in my diary. I never wanted to reveal too much for fear someone would read it, so I always held back a little bit and expressed serious thoughts and feelings through random doodles and drawings, only hinting at the big stuff with a few words. Drawing made me feel less vulnerable than writing out all of the details of my days, and creating those drawings helped me decompress. Handwriting as an art form is an expression of oneself, and I have a deep appreciation for how different writing utensils can alter my script. I have always loved the act of simply writing words—stringing them together in various shapes and sizes or using them to create abstract patterns. The words don’t actually need to say anything. Writing words or single letterforms in groupings—more like stream of consciousness thoughts—has always been a fluid and calming exercise for me. In college I had sketchbooks filled with random writings of patterned words alongside small drawings. I would photocopy these to use in collage work. The sketchbook I used for class notes and planning how I would solve design projects was the most precious thing in my schoolbag. My husband even proposed to me in one of my journals. When I became a mother, I filled journals with our boys’ first words and milestones. I keep travel journals on every trip we take, and I encourage my kids to always have a blank book in their bags as well. There is something about turning the pages of a book—this compact object that contains days, or months, worth of artwork and thoughts, transporting us to another place and time—that has always been so satisfying to me.

As the years passed, I noticed that the drawings were disappearing from the pages of my journals. As my life got busier with work and family, I spent less and less time drawing. Months turned into years, and eventually I felt as if I could no longer draw. I had spent more than eighteen years working as a graphic designer, and one day I realized that I was desperate for a creative outlet free from computer screens and technology. When I had our boys, I was running a successful design business, and I continued to work throughout their young years. I somehow balanced work and being Mom, but by the time they were in school full time, I knew the commercial design work wasn’t scratching my creative itch. The thought of sitting at the computer for eight hours a day became daunting. So I began to look for a new creative hobby that could enhance my days. But where to begin and what to do? These were scary questions, and I felt that the best place to start was in one of my trusted journals. My husband encouraged me by saying, “You used to draw more. The talent is there, you just have to find it again.”

So I made a commitment to include some drawing practice on each page of my journal. I had no idea what would happen, but I began to practice. I figured there was no safer place than inside my own private journal to relearn how to draw by hand. After a few months of drawing patterns, letterforms, birds, and food, I gained confidence. At that point I decided not to just draw random sketches, but to use the pages to draw a true record of my life. I thought,
Instead of writing out my day for my journaling practice, why not illustrate it?

I love this book!

I love this book!
I purchased this book after learning the basics of watercolor painting. After reading through the entire book I started making my first sketch journal. I returned from vacation with several fun photos and memories to refer to. I'm new to sketching, so this part was harder for me. But I took it slowly, adding pencil sketches, then ink using Micron pens. Next, I added some journaling about my vacation and finished using watercolor and Tombo water-soluble markers for shading. It was a blast! I added a few more pages about my vacation and am currently working on pages about my spring garden. This is addictive! Samantha's book is inspirational and contains a ton of examples and advice. I loved this book so much that I recently purchased her book, Draw Your World.I likely won't be sketch journaling like a daily diary, but more to record snippets of my experiences and use photos I've taken as references to compose them into pages. I'm fairly slow at this point so trying to keep up with a daily complete page would turn it into work for me and I want to keep it light and fun.Samantha, your books are wonderful! I can tell this is a new hobby for me that won't fade over time.

This book really taught me how to layout my journal pages in an attractive fashion. I also found a lot of ideas and inspiration in the author’s text.

First of all, let me say that I love the content very much. I have been following Ms. Baker for sometime and I feel that our styles have - a lot in common. My goal was to stick to YouTube tutorials or online teachings however I felt that I had to have this book. I debated the Kindle or the paper addition. Since we live in an RV and are very limited on space I should’ve chosen the Kindle, but as a treat I purchased the book. It’s been a long time since I’ve held a book in my hands and I just thought it was me, page after page text being so small. I look at the pictures and I love the continent again. I finally decided that I would try Miss Baker’s other book Draw Your World, and I ordered it for kindle. It wasn’t me after all. I love snuggling down in bed with my iPad and browsing to my hearts content with text that I can actually see. I thought I would miss the feel of the paper but the ability to read so easily even without my glasses is just amazing. I wish I knew how to swap this paper copy of draw your day with the Kindle edition so that I can enjoy it too. The point is to really think about The text size before you order. Miss Baker if you read these would you be willing to let me pay this paper copy forward or even return it? it’s in perfect condition. And get the kindle version. Consider the text size before you order.

I love this book and think it is so beautiful. Mrs. Dion Baker is an extremely talented artist. I am no where near being able to execute sketches as beautiful as hers. However this book gives me so much inspiration and a great desire to pick up a pencil/paints and give it a try. If I keep trying I will get better and better and this book gives me so much beauty to strive for and makes me want to journal!!

I'm not done reading but so far it is just what I need for inspiration and ideas how to. I'm spending some time in an adult camp as such and want to document in drawings mostly to protect the innocent. And as I move into my new home, I will keep track too.

I love books. I love art books. But I’m not always able to take a book out of my book case. This one is lovely to have on hand for when you’re in a waiting room or laying ill in bed and such.
As for the content, this is a great book for when you want to sketch, paint oe whatever but are stuck on the how to begin and how to know what to paint or whatever.
The illustrations are inspiring on their own so even when you are in such a bad place in your life, scrolling through and seeing the pictures might spark something

I hate writing a diary but I can never remember what happens and when. so I thought as I like drawing this might be a good place to start. really good ideas for doing a journal and hopefully I can. look back and say oh yes that is why that happened without start=ing a diary and giving it up by jan 3rd. been doing this for a few weeks now and it focusses me on to taking time out just for me so its really goo for mental health if you like sketching.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fa venire voglia di incominciare subito un diario illustrato
Reviewed in Italy on March 16, 2022
