Purchase options and add-ons

Simple and evocative language and charming illustrations describe a boy's experience in the garden.

In this gently rhyming board book, a young boy creates a garden, one small action at a time. First he digs in the dirt and plants seeds, then he adds soil, water, and some patience. With time, the seeds grow and the boy excitedly discovers what he has helped to make.

Elizabeth Spurr and Manelle Oliphant together create a perfect sit-in-your-lap reading experience for toddlers.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"With many close-ups and a realistic feel, this has potential to both introduce an understanding of how things grow and be a useful easy reader."—Booklist

"Subtle, understated spreads complement the powerfully quiet text. The soft lines move just enough to create gentle energy within each frame. . . With a little water and tender loving care, it's a pleasure to watch this garden grow."
—Kirkus Reviews

"Delicately illustrated. . . Oliphant's illustrations express the passage of time through changes in light. . . while Spurr's careful descriptions capture the slow but gratifying process of planting and harvesting."
—Publishers Weekly

Very simple but cute book. My 5 year old and I recently started a garden so this was a perfect book to include in his nightime routine.

I like size of book. Good for preschoolers

This cute, rhyming story is adorable! We are big gardeners, & this book is exactly what I was looking for to surround my children with an appreciation for nature. The illustrations are great - the tomato plants look like tomato plants! The pumpkin leaves look like pumpkin leaves! I was impressed & very pleased with this book.

This has been my grandson's favorite book for many months (he is 15 months old now). Drawings, colors, simple story are ALL great! B. especially likes when the sprouts pop out. After the success of these one, I ordered the other two by the same author (this one is still favored).

This book could easily have been gender neutral. I don't think the child being a "boy" added anything to this story.

Sweet, simple text. Beautiful illustration. A great gift for young children (1-3 yrs.) who love to play in the dirt!

The children in my class love this book. We enjoyed talking about seeds and stages of growth for plants.

We got this from the library, and the LO (16mo) really seemed to enjoy it. So we got a copy. I was an avid veggie gardener in our old home, so I am hoping that encouraging this in books, will lead to her working with my outside when spring comes.
