Ideal dosage and good price
It troubles me to see 5 mg and 10mg melatonin supplements as the top options when I search for “melatonin” on Amazon. These are far too high a dosage to be effective. In the past, I had tried 1 mg and 3 mg melatonin supplements, and actually had trouble falling asleep. I looked it up and found that even 1 mg is too much and can cause an opposite effect. I ended up cutting the ones I had into smaller portions, and it was a pain. I really like that these are a low 300 mcg (or 0.3 mg) dosage, no cutting necessary. It’s recommended to take 30 minutes in advance, but I take these 2 hours in advance. I tested it on a night I didn't have anything important the next day and found it took me about 2 hours to feel the effects.According to several MIT studies, 300 mcg or 0.3 mg is the ideal dosage. When the brain’s melatonin receptors are exposed to too much of the hormone, they become unresponsive. And that is why you either can’t fall asleep, will wake up shortly after sleep, or even feel groggy the next day if you take too much melatonin. Despite this product being the correct dosage, I would still caution against using it long term. Good for adjusting your sleep schedule short term, but since it isn’t regulated by the FDA, we don’t know if there are any detrimental long term effects.I’d also like to note that despite the marketing saying it’s “clean nutrition” without gluten, dairy, or artificial flavors, realize that the ingredients are all synthetic. Even the brand name “Sundown Naturals” gives the perception of being natural. But remember the melatonin along with all the other ingredients are actually synthetic.Likes:- good dosage (higher doesn’t mean better)- good price (purchased for $4.18)- works at adjusting sleep schedule- tiny tablets you take with water (not chewables or gummies)Dislikes:- synthetic ingredientsSummary: Glad to have found this dosage. It helps me to change my sleeping pattern whenever it gets out of whack. I wouldn’t suggest using it long term, but temporarily to adjust your sleep schedule should be fine.

So basically everyone is overdosing on melatonin. The recommended dosage is actually 300 mcg. I used to buy the 3 mg pills and split them - but then I read that even 1 1/2 mg is way too much. Unfortunately the lower dosage melatonin is harder to find, however Amazon never lets me down and I found this brand.

I was worried that it wouldn't be enough, since it seemed like I was needing more to get to sleep - but I have found that this lower dosage actually works much better. There is less grogginess in the morning and I am falling asleep faster than I used to. In addition, I used to take melatonin every night to fall asleep but now I’m only taking it a couple of times a week. I guess those fancy schmancy sleep scientist people may know a thing or two about sleep. As a bonus, these pills are chewable - and don't taste horrible. Don’t get me wrong - they don’t taste great - but chewing them won’t leave you gasping and gagging unless you are into that….
If you are on the fence about trying these, I strongly suggest you try them out for a month. If you are moving off a lower dosage - you may need to start with two each night, until your body adjusts to the lower dosage. (Let me add that I’ve also been reducing late night screen time as those same sleep scientist suggest that the blue light of the screen inhibits natural melatonin production but your mileage may vary.)

I should preface this review with my sleep condition. I have a shifted circadian rhythm, my melatonin naturally starts producing at 4am, thus having a 9-5 is almost impossible. Because of this I had pretty bad insomnia which also caused frequent sleep paralysis.

After a while I went to a sleep doctor to figure out the issue, and they gave me ambient. I used it for 3 years with great success to my sleep. Ambient can have cause some serious health issues, but needs doctor's approval for every month of refill; I decided it was time to shift to a different sleep hypnotic, that had less of a chance for health issues.

When I brought this up, I was requested to try taking melatonin as specific times every day. One issue, the normal 5mg doses that stores sell was too much for me. It was like being so high that you just wanted to crawl out of your body, not a good high.

So I purchased these .3mg versions. The calculation is odd, but I can say that these have been quite useful in my sleep. Since I started taking the medicine, I haven't needed an ambient to sleep in over 3 months and it looks like I won't be needing it for the rest of my life.

I don't know if this is a common thing for others, but I can only handle about 2.7mg before I become physically "drunk" on melatonin—I can't explain the feeling any other way.

If you want melatonin and need it in smaller doses than 5mg, pick these up. You do have to buy an order of 3, but it's so cheap that it's not an issue. I'd say that at about 0.9mg - 2.1mg a day, give or take, can last you about 3-4 months or so, which is currently cheaper than ambient.

Hope this review from for the non-sleepers helps.

Love this low-dose melatonin. I'm very sensitive to melatonin, I have no idea how people can take 3 mg at a pop. This is crazy to me - I tried 1 mg and slept for over 12 hours! lol

But really low doses like this - 300 mcg, which is like a little over 1/4 mg, works great to regulate my sleep cycles and actually helps me from sleeping too much, which I tend to do. I'll easily sleep 9-10 hours or more. If I take large doses of Melatonin, forget it, I'll sleep 12 hours and then feel like I need a nap.

A small dose like this is perfect, it regulates me to about 8 hours and I feel good when I wake up, like I actually want to get up and out of bed! Really seems to normalize my sleep cycles. It's a little expensive I wish I could just cut up the 1 mg. pills into 4 pieces, but that doesn't really work, they don't break evenly and then I end up getting too much or too little.

I also feel like the quality and absorbability of this supplement is really good. If you respond well to small amounts of Melatonin - this is the supplement for you! If you don't know if you do - and you respond badly to high doses (or even average doses) of Melatonin, give this a try - it might really surprise you.

I honestly don't think most of us need these large doses of melatonin that are usually sold - it is a hormone and should be taken with care. My opinion, anyway. YMMV.

For a while I was taking 5mg and was having the most craziest dreams, the most sluggish days afterward, and the most depressive feelings after multiple days of 5mg melatonin. I tried chopping the pills, and was getting to the point of smaller and smaller sizes, like using a razor to cut a single 5mg pill into 8 pieces, and was impossible to do evenly and consistently. I even thought about getting a pestle and mortar and grinding down to powder and making my own pills using gelatin capsules. Luckily, I saw a recommendation online that smaller doses were available, and after doing some research I found that smaller dose is just as effective. So I ordered these for myself and the results have been great. The pills are only 300mcg (micrograms) but they give me a restful nights sleep within 30-40 minutes of taking the pills. Best of all, no crazy dreams, no sluggish dehydrated morning after feeling, and no depressive accumulation! Also, these Sundown brand pills are unique in that they melt on your tongue after about 20-30 seconds. As someone who doesn't like swallowing pills, the melting style works really well for me, its just tastes like a little bit of sugar. I'm really glad I got these and will be ordering more for the future!
