The is an updated version of the now legendary Army 21-76 survival manual. This manual covers most anything that you would ever face in a survival situation. It probably does the best job of explaining the mental/psychological aspects of dealing with an emergency and how to cope properly with it. How to find water anywhere in the world. How to perform first aid for yourself and others. How to navigate using the stars and shadow stick methods and how to use your watch do determine direction. How to build shelters for the climate you find yourself in and how to make fire with various methods and how to hide it from enemy observation. How to make weapons and traps with what you find in the wilderness to catch animals for food. How to identify edible plants anywhere in the world and how plants in the right combination will meet all your nutritional needs even for the long term. How to also use medicinal plants to make remedies for many wounds and sicknesses. Also, you will learn about how to survive a nuclear blast and how to decontaminate yourself if you are exposed to radiation. How to procure food and water and how to make it safe to consume after a nuclear situation in your area. This survival manual covers nearly everything and is one of the most complete ever written. One of the things about the manual that I love is that it is simple and easy to follow and has no fancy pictures. It is very detailed and explains everything better than most manuals. It features line drawings that are clear and easy to understand. Jesus is your answer and God Bless You. Romans 10:9-10

This book is right up there with Hawke's Green Beret Survival Manual. The US Army Survival Handbook covers just about every survival topic a person might be interested in, especially the pertinent topics. It was written for soldiers, but it will come in handy for anyone interested in camping, hiking,or someone who, having gone camping or hiking, has gotten lost in the wilderness in any climate. You will find in this book everything you need to know about surviving, from how to light a fire without matches or lighter,to surviving after a nuclear, biological,or chemical incident. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the topic, because one never knows when it might come in handy. Anyone who has ever watched the television show, I Shouldn't Be Alive, knows that sometimes you just fall into survival situations;your car breaks down in the middle of a deserted desert while on a road trip, or any number of unforeseen possibilities. This book is packed full of good, useful, information should you find yourself in such a situation.

I bought this in hard copy for my 13 year old nephew. He seemed to like it. I haven't read this particular version, but they're all THE SAME -- they're based on the official US Army manual, which is online. I've downloaded and read the online version.

(As a previous reviewer pointed out, a soldier's wife iirc, the US Army Survival Handbook is available on the Internet -- just use search term "FM 21-76-1" (old Army numbering system) or "FM 3-05.70" (new Army numbering system). It's available online in Adobe Acrobat PDF format FOR FREE, so unless you NEED a hard copy, you don't necessarily have to buy a book.)

This version seems to have a good, sturdy binding, but is still paperback. The cover seems water proof, but the pages aren't.

It's got the usual information you'd expect on evading "the enemy", finding your fellow troops, and surviving in various climates. It's a good, bare-bones survival guide.

There's a lot of information you also wouldn't expect -- like how to maintain hygiene, which is important for maintaining your health (consider the possible parasites in the various geographical locales or climates, especially tropical! ick!). And there's useful info on building quick shelter and how to distill drinkable water when the water around you is not drinkable or there *is* no water around you.

One caveat: this manual presumes you have some basic equipment with you -- like a big knife, fishing line or nylon, those sorts of things. If you don't, you won't be able to do use some of the survival techniques the manual advises. So keep that in mind.

I'm enjoying this book. There are so many great survival tips I didn't know about. Concise, easy to read. It includes useful pictures for example, on building shelters, traps, etc.

one little complaint.
the section on tracking and counter-tracking is almost negligible.
a U.S. special forces tracking/countertracking manual exists on the web in .pdf format and is waaaay more in depth with tracking/countertracking. search for "TC 31-34-4".

i know its impossible to cover it all with such limited space (1 book), but i figure why even have a section on something if your not gonna cover it well. anyways, thats my complaint. this is the only survival book ive ever bought. im pleased. organized very well. 5 stars.

I have a survival pack and this book is in it. I've purchased several other survival books, but this one is the one you want to take with you into the field. It has nearly everything in it that that other books cover, but it is also sized right to fit in a pack. This is the US Army issue survival book. It's good enough for them. Believe me, it will be good enough for you.

I bought this handbook and the SAS Survival handbook around the same time. The SAS Survival handbook is by far a better survival handbook. It's laid out better has more detail and easier to understand. When the s*** hits the fan I will grab the SAS and run.

Lots of vital short term survival information in a condensed format, perfect for a small go bag. This is probably the most important item in my kit.
Arrived quickly in perfect condition. Just stick it in a large ziplock bag (a quart size bag was just a bit too small) and leave it in your pack. Knowledge is the key to survival.
