(As a previous reviewer pointed out, a soldier's wife iirc, the US Army Survival Handbook is available on the Internet -- just use search term "FM 21-76-1" (old Army numbering system) or "FM 3-05.70" (new Army numbering system). It's available online in Adobe Acrobat PDF format FOR FREE, so unless you NEED a hard copy, you don't necessarily have to buy a book.)
This version seems to have a good, sturdy binding, but is still paperback. The cover seems water proof, but the pages aren't.
It's got the usual information you'd expect on evading "the enemy", finding your fellow troops, and surviving in various climates. It's a good, bare-bones survival guide.
There's a lot of information you also wouldn't expect -- like how to maintain hygiene, which is important for maintaining your health (consider the possible parasites in the various geographical locales or climates, especially tropical! ick!). And there's useful info on building quick shelter and how to distill drinkable water when the water around you is not drinkable or there *is* no water around you.
One caveat: this manual presumes you have some basic equipment with you -- like a big knife, fishing line or nylon, those sorts of things. If you don't, you won't be able to do use some of the survival techniques the manual advises. So keep that in mind.
the section on tracking and counter-tracking is almost negligible.
a U.S. special forces tracking/countertracking manual exists on the web in .pdf format and is waaaay more in depth with tracking/countertracking. search for "TC 31-34-4".
i know its impossible to cover it all with such limited space (1 book), but i figure why even have a section on something if your not gonna cover it well. anyways, thats my complaint. this is the only survival book ive ever bought. im pleased. organized very well. 5 stars.
Arrived quickly in perfect condition. Just stick it in a large ziplock bag (a quart size bag was just a bit too small) and leave it in your pack. Knowledge is the key to survival.
