Maria Weston wants to be friends. But Maria Weston is dead. Isn't she?
1989. When Louise first notices the new girl who has mysteriously transferred late into their senior year, Maria seems to be everything the girls Louise hangs out with aren't. Authentic. Funny. Brash. Within just a few days, Maria and Louise are on their way to becoming fast friends.
2016. Louise receives a heart-stopping email: Maria Weston wants to be friends on Facebook. Long-buried memories quickly rise to the surface: those first days of their budding friendship; cruel decisions made and dark secrets kept; the night that would change all their lives forever.
Louise has always known that if the truth ever came out, she could stand to lose everything. Her job. Her son. Her freedom. Maria's sudden reappearance threatens it all, and forces Louise to reconnect with everyone she'd severed ties with to escape the past. But as she tries to piece together exactly what happened that night, Louise discovers there's more to the story than she ever knew. To keep her secret, Louise must first uncover the whole truth, before what's known to Maria--or whoever's pretending to be her--is known to all.

SYNOPSIS
Louise, a recently divorced single mother receives a disturbing FB Friend Request from a former high school classmate, Martha. Not only is Martha dead, but Louise was not very nice to her in high school and she may have played a part (indirectly or possibly even directly) in her death. With a class reunion coming up and ominous Facebook messages popping up, Louise is desperate to find out who is behind these messages. As she digs into a past she has tried hard to forget, she comes to terms with the teenager she once was and the adult she is now.
WHAT I LOVED
Yet another Brit-lit book! Man, I love those British books. This one in particular was great because I did the immersion reading/audio. There were several phrases which the book "Americanized" but the audio book left pure Brit. For instance, if we lived in England, instead of attending a prom, we would have gone to a "leavers party!" My prom sucked. I think I would have had much more fun at a "leavers party."
Great plot. There were times I was convinced Louise was paranoid and creating the whole thing in her mind because I couldn't piece together exactly what happened. In fact, at one time or another, I found myself suspecting every character in the book with the exception of four year old Henry. It turned out I had part of it correct but parts of it never even crossed my mind.
I could very much relate to one of the main themes in the book; the idea of doing some stupid things when you're young and being unable to foresee how potentially damaging these things could turn out to be. Not that I may or not have been involved in anyone's death BUT there are times I wished I had been nicer or didn't mind my own business and instead stopped someone from doing something mean. Unfortunately, you cannot change the past and erase those mistakes.
I love books with complex characters and I felt like Louise was a good example of that. She had made mistakes in life but was not a bad person at all. I loved Esther. She was just such a spunky nerd. Loved it.
WHAT I DIDN'T LOVE
There are often times in books, particularly in the thriller genre where the characters do something stupid, trust the wrong person or omit something big when talking to the police or another character which makes things go awry. Louise did this and it annoyed me! She could have saved herself a lot of trouble if she had come clean about a few things. Sometimes I couldn't relate to her instincts.
It is a story told in two different time frames. 1989 when unkind bullying of a teenager (Maria) takes place at school and 2016 when one of the people(Louise) who bullied her gets a friend request from Maria. The problem is that the night of the leavers’ party 27 years before, Maria went missing and pronounced dead by the police.
Louise continues to get disturbing messages via Facebook from Maria and this forms the thrilling part of the story as the reader is drawn into the events that have shaped the lives of those involved. I liked the character of Ester who shows that it’s not impossible to rise above unkindness and go on to good things. The best revenge truly is to become successful.
This is on one level a good read for those who think bullying is a harmless childish stage that will be grown out of. On another level, it is a lesson to keep one’s business reasonably private instead of publishing it for all to read. The desire to have countless ‘friends’ and evoke an unrealistic portrayal of one’s like in the pursuit of making oneself more desirable also forms an undercurrent. In 1989 this took the form of being in the popular clique at school. In 2016 it seems to have been taken over to a certain degree by Facebook.
Deeply disturbing and enlightening at the same time, don’t believe that people just get over hurt they experience as youngsters. Neither do those close to them.
“Maria Weston wants to be friends. But Maria Weston is dead. Isn't she?”
So, most of my reviews are always super positive but for this book, I am actually torn. It took me
Very long to get into this book but I didn’t want to give up. I wasn’t really hooked until the last few chapters. This is no fault to the author because the book was written very well, but I didn’t connect with characters. I actually couldn’t stand Louise for 80% of the book. Louise was constantly saying that as an adult she has changed, but she still was dishonest and secretive and to me, still to much a coward to face the truth.
The things that Louise did to Maria when they were “young” annoyed me because all the characters say “you do stupid things when your young” but I was also young once and I never treated another person that way. I was taught right from wrong at a young age and learned to be a leader not a follower and clearly Louise never had that, which is why I could not connect to her character
I almost wish the book talked more about Maria. I loved her character. A sweet and innocent character who did not deserve what happened to her. I also wish that Maria hadn’t died and she was coming back for her revenge.
I didn’t love this book, but I didn’t hate this book. So I guess I liked it haha If you love twists and turns, then this is the book for you because I can honestly say, I HAD NO idea that villain was going to be who it turned out to be.
