Product Description
The eon travel backpack is a versatile pack that's ideal for overnight travel alone or as a companion piece with other eon travel bags. The triple coated front panel provides weather resistance while the padded back panel, sternum strap and shoulder straps allow for comfortable and stable carrying. A dedicated technology compartment features a padded sleeve that fits up to a 17 inch macbook pro, an ipad slip pocket, and smart organization for cables, chargers and other accessories. Even better, the tech compartment's butterfly design opens flat for quick and easy airport security screening. This allows you to keep electronics fully protected as your bag passes through the scanner, and eliminates the hassle of moving your devices to security bins

First, I need a bag that holds my camera gear for street photography (2-3 lenses + 1 mirrorless body). All camera bags does this job, but most of them is a overkill to me with too much padded space for camera gear and less organized space for other essentials, such as notebooks, books, kindle, Switch, chargers, cables, clothes... Or they are either not slick enough or too bulky for everyday use. That comes to my second need: urban daily carry. Taken those two needs together, I started looking into 20L bags that have a "thick" main compartment (4-5") so that I can fit a camera cub into it (I'm fine with no quick access to the camera cuz I use shoulder/wrist straps) and have a potential to expand since I also wanted to use the same bag for short urban travel so it needs to be able to fit a few clothes and a jacket. After 3 months of searching (with a $300 budget), I settled to Incase EO Travel Backpack.
Pros:
1. Aesthetically great for daily urban use
2. Fits my essentials without expansion
3. After expansion, I can put clothes for multiple days in it.
4. Fits camera inserts in the front main compartment
5. It is lightweight
6. Love the spacious laptop compartment. I can fit my 15" MBP and its charger, a slim book, a traveler's notebook and a kindle in it.
7. Love the handles. Very comfortable.
To be improved:
1. Use better water resistant material, especially at the bottom. Zippers feel okay, but can be better. Clips are cheap.
2. Space organization is already incredible, but can be improved. e.g: i) in the front main compartment, all expandable mesh pockets are at the bottom and the space on the top is wasted. ii) make the front pocket (with the sleek horizontal zipper) big, into both the top and the bottom of the bag.
3. Lack of a waist strap. Should have a detachable one
4. Lack of a loop on the back to secure on luggage handles
5. No D ring. Please add some inside.
6. Lack of outside water bottle holder. Those large pockets in the front main compartment fit water bottles but it would be great to have a compressible one on the outside (like Aer Travel 2)
7. Add a small flat compartment at the bottom for rain cover.
8. Add a popular passport pocket on the back.
Finally, let's compare Incase EO with several popular backpacks so that you can see the pros of it:
vs [WANDRD Prvke 21]
Prvke 21 fits my need. Although it has a large camera compartment, other pockets and organizations are good enough plus it's expandable. Prvke is made out of good materials including YKK zippers. However, there is a critical point that made this bag an absolutely no to me: it is not an urban bag; you look like a traveler when carrying Prvke in a city. It is a great adventure bag.
vs [Boundary Supply Errant]
That bag is a rising star. Boundary made a successful Prima system and is famous for their "nipple clips". This new Errant pack is made out of insanely good material (I bought it so I know it) and is very comfortable. However, I discovered 2 biggest flaws of Errant 1) space utilization: pockets fight with each other for space. 2) CB1 camera cube makes it really hard to open and close the lid. It is a great backpack if you don't have the need to put cameras.
vs [Aer Travel 2]
Aer has better material and better organization pockets. However, it lacks a main compartment to fit camera inserts and I don't like the look when it's compressed (literally it doesn't expand/compress).
vs [Peak Design Everyday 20]
I'm a big fan of PD and have multiple their products. My major concern about the Everyday 20 is that you have to use dividers to separate everything and small things may sneak between dividers. For my EO, I throw all the chargers and cables into the upper zipped pocket in the clamshell-luggage-like compartment. Of course, it also cannot compete with the volume of expanded EO.
Incase, thank you for making this backpack. Please keep improving it and many of us will be happy to buy newer versions in the future.
This is just the start, though. It fits comfortably over a casual sport coat and being able to cruise through the airport without having to wheel around my carry on is night and day. It's also got clean lines and a simple design so it doesn't make me feel like a dork (well, not like any more of a dork).
And then you get in the plane. And it fits easily under the seat in front of you so you don't have to battle the great airborne masses for overhead storage. And, since the zippers for your laptop and main stuff storage are are on the top of the bag, provided you have enough room to actually open a laptop, you can slide it out without having to pull your bag all the way out and open it up. Same goes for a book, water bottle, lunch, whatever.
Another thing I love (and an unlikely one): the top handle. This is truly great. Pulling the bag out from under an airline seat: top handle. Putting the bag in/out of a cab: top handle. Also: under the top handle: a tiny pocket for headphones/cables, keys – that's FAUX FUR LINED!!
I'm not kidding. This bag's amazing. I couldn't be happier with mine. (Obviously)
The main reason I purchased this bag was I wanted the flexibility to use it every day for work, carrying my laptop, headphones, and various books, notebooks, and papers. As well as have the option to use it while traveling, and be able to carry a bit more. Say, extra clothes, some toiletries, without having to switch bags. You can definitely do that with this bag, but you're going to sacrifice some things, on the daily use side.
No external bottle holder is the big item for me. Though there are two internal pockets that would hold, at least my, coffee cup and 20oz hydro flask upright, these items tend to leak and I'd wouldn't know until it's gone through the bag. Add to that, you need to open the pocket to get to them, along with the fact that it kind of gives the bag a funny shape, I think side, or external pouches would have done well. However, I don't see where or how that could have been done, as it would have gotten in the way of one of the features I do like, being the compression straps.
Another negative for me, is the top, lined pouch which I can only imagine would be for smaller items, you need to access in a hurry. It's a bit difficult to get to, since it's nearly right under the top handle, and when compressed all the zippers look the same, and I've ended up opening the wrong one more than a few times. I believe most reviewers have said it's too small for sunglasses, however I haven't had that problem. I do have to angle it to get it through the zipper, but mine do fit in the pocket itself.
Empty, the bag feels a bit heavier than most it's size. Hopefully, that's due to quality material being used, rather than just bloat. I think this makes it a bit difficult to wear with only one-strap. However, using both seems to make the weight problem a non-issue.
Finally, I don't think I'd ever carry this like a suitecase, with the side handle. The shoulder straps can't be tucked away, and I can only imagine they'd get in the way while traveling. I imagine though, that the only time it would be practical to carry this bag like that, would be when traveling, which would be even more difficult with the added weight of clothes. Maybe if there was a shoulder strap you could attach to this bag as well, but that's not something, at least I was looking for. I imagine this handle is more for another grabbing point, to pull from TSA checkpoints, or overhead bins, etc.
With those main negatives out of the way, there are more than a few positives for this bag.
As mentioned previously, the compression straps on the side, are a key feature for me. They seem heavy duty enough, and keep smaller items I'm carrying upright so they don't fall awkwardly in the bag, and dig into my bag. Think, pouches, smaller books, etc.
The outer most pocket, is large, and easy to get to for those frequently used items, and if accidentally left open, it's not a gaping opening in the bag. I wouldn't/don't put anything of significant value in there, because it would be the easiest pocket to get things out of but to be able to put my headphones in there, and quickly access them is great.
The straps, and handles seem to be of good quality, and only time will tell if they stand up, but the overall wear of the bag is comfortably for me. At 5'8'' 200lbs. I don't think the bag is too big for my frame, but any bigger and it would be. It does feel large on my back but I think that's due to the wide shoulder straps, and back padding, making it seem like a bigger bag.
The laptop compartment holds my 13 inch macbook pro fine, and I'm sure the 15 inch would fit with more than enough space as well. I also have some notebooks, and papers in that pocket as well with no problem. The lining definitely feels premium, and though not extremely padded on the bottom, I'm sure your laptop would be fine, lest you slam the bag on the ground.
The amount of organization is just enough for me, with a few pen holders, and larger pockets to allow for flexibility. I use a tech pouch for my smaller items, and think I'd continue to use it even if a bag had enough small pockets.
The large travel compartment is a beast! Setup almost like a suitcase, I was able to get what I felt like a weeks worth of clothes in there. Though, for weight sake I don't think I'd realistically carry more than 2-3 days, as recommended. I primarily use it compressed, but even when that pocket is compressed, I put my tech pouch, and other things in there, so the space doesn't go to waste. You could definitely fit a jacket or sweater in there for everyday use.
I really like the overall simple, minimalistic design of the bag. I have it in black, and am glad it doesn't scream INCASE across the outside. Bottom right corner does have the brand, but black-on-black keeps it subtle. Around the bag you'll find the logo, and and another tag that says INCASE, but you'd have to be looking pretty hard to find them.
