While Garmin happily replaced my old unit and strap for free, I impatiently ordered this one on Amazon so that I could continue my training ASAP. (Never hurts to have two! =P ) Both of the replacement units have the "new" soft strap, and I'm super pumped, because they're significantly better.
First and foremost, all heart rate and conductivity issues seem improved. While, I'm not sure of the exact science, there are some clear changes in the form of different patches of material on the band. Whatever it is, it seems to work!
Despite my own skepticism when reading about the "increased comfort," I have to admit that something about this material is also much more comfortable than the old version. It seems slightly thicker and sturdier. The material on my old one actually began to wrinkle after a year of use, so it became somewhat morphed. 90% of the time it just hung in my closet, so it really wasn't under and major stress. A few hot days of sitting wadded up in my gym bag distorted it. This strap is hold it's shape much better!
Overall, this unit and strap are great. Both of my previous issues seem fixed with the "new improvements," so I can't report any complaints.
Works great with any ANT+ campatible device, very comfortable, and supposedly more accurate than their other heart rate monitor. I never had any problems with them old plastic monitor and would still be using it if I hadn't lost it, but some people found it uncomfortable and inaccurate. This model doesn't really seem different as far as accuracy, it may be a little more comfortable, and there look to be a LOT more adjustablity in the strap. The device snaps onto the strap with buttons and is secure but also easy to remove for cleaning. As far as accuracy goes, I haven't noticed anything different, but there are three sensors on the strap, two on your chest and one on your side under your arm.
Cons:
The only negative I have with this comparing it to garmin's regular HRM is that the strap only disconnects at one point. This is probably because the strap now goes all the way around yourather than only around your back like the old one, not a horrible thing but something I'm having to get used to.
All we did is open the box, straped around chest turn the sensor on the 64 series GPS on, and it started searching for it, found it, then immediately started working, when the strap was driving we had to place your hand over it several times pushing it down on her chest to make sure it would send a reading out to the 64 series GPS when the strap is wet it works much better 100% without losing the connection so far we haven't tested it that rigorously but the little bit we have done shows the major difference
Four stars is because when you're wearing it if it is dry and you don't wet the straps down the contact between your skin and the strap 10 to at times not make that contact and every now and then you lose the signal. We're still testing it and we like it and we noticed when the strap is wet it definitely keeps the connection between you and the strap much better.
Just wearing it around the house dry the signal works and is intermittent times in less you grab your hand and press it against the strap it will reconnect your heart and the signal to the strap at times it does create a problem when the strap is dry Garman recommends wedding it it's also in the instructions about wedding down the three spots for the sensors, this definitely improves it a lot. Also Garman does not recommend using it dry it is recommended to wet the sensors on the strap in the three spots and then use it as a connection definitely stays more true and has less non-connecting issues.
Wearing the strap under a tight shirt will definitely help for it not moving if you use the strap by itself and you were very aggressive person the strap when you're sweaty may tend to slide around or fall off depending upon how aggressive you are with your activity so using a tight shirt with or a whisk away dry sweet shirt, shirt was a big help
We also use the German temperature gauge pod it's the one that does temperature only we have no problems with it works 100% and is always on with the temperature when you turn 64 series GPS on.

I've been using this HR strap daily for about 1 month now. I use it for running, cycling, boxing, HIIT training, rowing, and a number of other activities.
I was initially concerned that the strap would move or fall down when doing vigorous activities using the upper body (like boxing). When I first put the strap on, I felt like it was constantly moving down and was almost ready to send it back. I kept tightening it more and more, until I gave myself red marks around my chest when I wore it. However, I found that loosening the strap solved the issue. Since then, I've found the strap does actually stay in place. Regardless of whether I'm running, cycling, boxing or anything else, it stays up, and remains in contact with the skin.
For maintenance, I remove the electronic element after each workout (I've noticed my Garmin watch remains connected to the strap even when I've taken the strap off, if the strap is wet - so removing the electronic element ensures battery is not drained). I then wash the strap in water and lay flat to dry.
To enhance connection, I lick the connection elements before applying the strap each time. This just ensures good contact between skin and strap (but does look a bit weird if you're spotted!)
Only on very rare occasions (once per 20 activities?) have I noticed the strap disconnect from my watch or show any erroneous readings. And when this has happened, it's lasted for less than a minute.
One minor issue I do have is that this strap has no "memory". Therefore, unlike Garmin's more premium straps, if this strap disconnects from your watch/phone, it won't save your HR during this disconnected period. Therefore, when I do some activities during which I can't wear a watch (e.g. boxing), I have to keep my watch in my pocket to ensure it's within range of the strap and, therefore, recording my HR.
One final thing I would say is that the strap is hard to adjust in length, due to the overly complex triple-back adjustor. Therefore, set a size and leave it. I wouldn't recommend sharing one strap between two or more people, as regularly adjusting the length would be frustrating and (I imagine) wear out the material quicker.
Overall, very impressed.
Sinon pour la longévité on verra bien, je n'ai pas assez de recul, elle semble plus solide que la SUUNTO mais l'avenir le dira.
Quick pros and cons.
Pros:
-Comfortable even at its tightest fit. I prefer a super tight fit because slippage on a long run is distracting and irritating. It's easily adjustable. Just play with the straps until you get what you need.
-Picks up heart rate easily. Some people have allegedly had difficulty finding their heart rate. I have had none. Many workouts without issue. All I do is quickly run the straps conductive pads under tap water, snap the monitor into the chest area, put it on, and off I go. Takes no time at all.
-Easy to sync with Vivofit 2. Just set my device to Sync, and it found the heart rate monitor instantly. No problems.
-Super easy to wash. Up to 7 workouts in a row, Garmin's instructions recommend just running it under water. I usually do that for a run or two. Call me a cleanliness enthusiast. Next, it goes in the washing machine. Remove the monitor (aka. little chest piece), and throw the strap in the wash. I personally use a bra bag so that it doesn't get snagged on anything. I tend to toss it in with my delicates in a cold wash. Comes out smelling lemony fresh, and I've had zero issues employing this method.
Cons:
-I've been using it for a month and a half now with zero issues, but I could see the strap wearing out after successive tightening considering what it's made out of. However, I'll update the moment I have a problem. If you've seen any of my previous reviews on electronics, I tend to be rather exhaustive on the updating. I think my humidifier update had 4 over two months.
All in all, I love my new heart rate monitor. I'd owned Polar before and been happy enough with it, but I'm equally happy with this Garmin product. I've also heard some rather horrific stories about chests being chafed and in some cases cut up by harder, plasticky straps. No thank you.
The following is why I chose to purchase a heart rate monitor in the first place and how it has benefited me over the short time I've used it.
5 months ago, I suffered a concussion while kickboxing. Every day, I wake up with post-concussive symptoms. Think of a balloon slowly inflating or deflating based on how much activity you're doing. In the beginning, walking to the bathroom was enough to inflate the balloon. After 5 months of slow, incremental rehab, I have returned to my sport full time, working out 5 days a week, but I still have to be careful because the pressure is always there. Symptoms are prominent when I am working hard. My physio therapists and I knew there was an obvious correlation between raised heart rate and symptoms (basically, the harder I'm working out, the more the pressure builds), but we wondered if there was a specific threshold that triggered a negative event. When you're in an elongated state of recovery, you grasp at every opportunity to get back into exercising fully, so I thought what the hell. I'll give a heart rate monitor an overdue shot (I'll refer to them as HRM's for the rest of the review). The catch was that I needed an HRM to update me DURING not AFTER the workout - something that would be great for running, HIIT, and intense kickboxing pad work/bag work.
I looked into things like the Wahoo Tickr and its myriad competitors, monitors that connect via bluetooth directly to your phone. Sounds great, right? For the price, it was a frontrunner. The problem is that I can't exactly check my phone while I'm hitting the bag - ditto when I'm doing hill sprints. I didn't want the distraction. Being able to glance at my wrist is a huge plus, so I opted to go that route. If you're in the market for a running companion, definitely look into bluetooth compatible HRMs. They're neato, and they don't require you to buy a wrist band ' they simply work with your phone.
Okay, then. So what about fitness tracker wrist watches with built-in HRM? I can't say this any clearer: emphatic NOPE. In my research, I found that wrist-based HRMs are terribly inaccurate. Even the most accurate on the market (I read many boring review articles on the subject) are only accurate within 20bpm. Sad to say, even Garmin's own products are guilty of this. And if we aren't buying a heart rate monitor for accuracy, what the heck are we doing? Obviously, those were out.
Clearly, we're going with a chest strap. A chest strap uses similar technology to an EKG machine to measure your heart rate through pads that sit against your skin. I used an old Polar heart rate monitor that I liked back in the day, but I went with the 'Garmin Premium Heart Rate Monitor (Soft Strap)' here on Amazon. Why? The reviews were good, the price was right, and I didn't want to spend ten dollars less and have to deal with compatibility issues. So far, the soft strap has been awesome. I paired it with a Vivofit 2 from Garmin. It was stupid easy. Basically, you press and hold the lone button until 'Pair' shows up. Release the button when your heart rate monitor is within 6 feet, and bam. They're new friends until death do they part (or a lazy owner forgets to replace the battery). If you're in the market for a wrist monitor/step counter, be sure to check out my exhaustive review on the Vivofit 2, also on Amazon.ca.
Running with both has been a dream. It''s easy to think, 'I know when I''m working out hard.' That''s usually true. You''re sweating profusely, you''re getting tired, but the unilateral, unbiased indicator is heart rate. What I''ve found is that, without the heart rate monitor, it''s easy to be lax, to not push AS hard for a set or a stretch of road. Obviously, you can get fit this way, but at this stage in my life, I want to train with the utmost efficiency. Not only has this provided a new way to monitor intensity, but I have a new found respect for the importance of heart rate recovery. I''ve always known it's important to get your heart rate down between intervals (or boxing rounds), but it''s super interesting monitoring set to set, activity to activity.
As for accuracy, it seems as accurate as my Polar was. Checking my wrist and seeing consistent results is uplifting. Reading a quickly dropping heart rate is even more so. Fortunately, my recovery continues to progress. Even when I''m healthy, I''ll continue to use the Softstrap, Vivofit, and friends. I can't believe how much more engaging it is to run based on heart rate rather than some arbitrary goal.
