About this item
- 16x4 DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem plus a built-in AC1600 Dual Band (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz) WiFi Gigabit Router with four Gigabit (GigE) Ethernet ports, a firewall, and more. This product is recommended for actual cable Internet service speeds up to 375 Mbps. A Broadcom cable modem chipset provides security from Denial of Service attacks.
- Requires cable Internet service. Approved by Comcast Xfinity and Xfinity X1, Cox, Charter Spectrum, BrightHouse, WOW., CableOne, RCN, Mediacom and other cable service providers. Eliminate cable modem rental fees up to 168 dollars per year. (Savings are shown for Xfinity and vary by provider). Not compatible with Verizon, AT&T, CenturyLink and other fiber optic, DSL or satellite services. Model MG7540 does not have a phone jack. This model cannot be used for making or receiving telephone calls.
- Built-in high-speed Wi-Fi router with AC1600 Wi-Fi provides Internet access for Wi-Fi devices including smartphones, notebooks, tablets, game stations, HDTVs, Amazon Echo, Google Home, Chromecast, Roku, Amazon Fire TV, and AppleTV. 4 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet LAN ports provide wired connections to Windows and Mac computers, HDTVs, game stations, streaming TV devices, and other Ethernet-capable devices.
- The router can work on WiFi DFS frequencies, unlike most routers, so it is much less vulnerable to WiFi interference from neighbors. AnyBeam beamforming at both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequencies focuses the signal on wireless clients to further enhance performance and range.
- Integrating the cable modem and router creates a reliable connection that reduces unwieldy wiring and power adapter clutter while conserving desk space. The vertical design minimizes shelf space and improves cooling while looking great in any home or office. A 2-year warranty plus rugged lightning and power surge circuits protect your investment.

Better WiFi with AC1600 Dual BandDual band gives you two WiFi networks operating simultaneously in the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Single band routers only use the 2.4 GHz band. This band is often full of interference as all your devices share that single band with your neighbors. The 5 GHz band in dual band products is typically much less crowded and has less interference. The bottom line? Dual band delivers much better WiFi. |
BeamformingAnyBeam WiFi beamforming at 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz focuses the wireless signal on your wireless devices to further enhance wireless performance. |
Clean and EasyIntegrating the modem and router saves space, reduces wires and power cubes, and provides a single user interface. |

I bought this cable-modem to replace the one from Comcast. Rental fees are the one thing that keep increasing over time even though the rented goods depreciate, and Comcast is no exception. But the thing that pushed me over the edge, was that the Arris modem from Comcast also couldn't keep up with my connected devices, requiring frequent restarts. Does this modem from Motorola do any better? Keep reading.
Setup was fairly easy. Almost everything went as per the setup manual. The one thing that didn't work for me was the activation through the Xfinity web page; it tried twice but failed in the end. I was able to activate the modem just fine over the phone through the Xfinity automated system. But heads-up to Xfinity Instant TV customers: If you subscribe to Instant TV (the cable TV service that doesn't use a cable box because everything streams through the Xfinity Stream app), activating this Motorola modem somehow messed up my Instant TV service and replaced it with regular cable TV service. Not a huge issue; I was able to resolve it quickly with an Xfinity customer care rep over the phone.
With both of my Xfinity services working the way they were supposed to, it was time to test out this modem/router. I have 15 devices connected to my home network, 2 over Ethernet and 13 over Wi-Fi. That said, I don't use all 15 devices at the same time, so 6 or 7 devices are connected at any given time. This was enough to bring the Arris modem from Comcast to its knees... and unfortunately things are the same for the Motorola MG7540. At first, speeds were great - a bit over the 150 Mbps I pay Comcast for, though their cable modem also gave me a bit more than my plan's speed. The problem is that the speed degrades as the days go by. 2.5 GHz speeds degrade first as expected, but eventually the problem hits my 5 GHz devices as well. On the sixth day using this Motorola modem/router, connectivity came to a screeching halt and I had to reboot the router. SIX DAYS! That's not good.
Speaking of rebooting the router, the Configuration Manager is poorly designed. You have to go into Advanced Options for pretty much everything, and everything is quite buried so you'll be clicking on link after link after link, even for things as simple as rebooting the router. The one thing I didn't find is where to check for software updates, so this router either doesn't get any updates at all, or they download behind your back without any control from the user, and you have to believe by faith that your router is receiving security updates.
I would not advise anyone against buying this router, but I also wouldn't recommend it either.
I'm the stubborn tech-brother, and I insisted on an upgrade. While I personally can attest to the stronger overall use of a split unit arrangement (cable modem --DOCSIS 3.0-- and separate wireless router), I know this household has to have a SIMPLE single device system. This works AMAZINGLY WELL. Simple setup via PC or handheld device, and I'm getting over 30mbs in the basement on both regular and 5G signal tests. It's only been two days, but for now, I HIGHLY recommend this unit. As a plus, when I called SPECTRUM cable to "activate" the modem, the Customer Service Rep, said (before anything else after I said I needed a personal modem activation) "I will first credit your account the $10 per month cable modem rental fee. Just return the rented unit to your nearest SPECTRUM CABLE facility". That was a nice surprise, though I don't expect any further great service from SPECTRUM cable....
I will update this review in future months if it doesn't live up to my expectations. I DID also pay full price for this modem on Amazon. There is no discount or incentive given to me. Just try to skip the similar modem/wifi units that date back to 2012...
