English duo Jadu Heart meld R&B, pop, hip-hop, and electronic sounds into ethereal yet groove-driven songs. They initially drew buzz for two 2016 EPs and their theatrically masked stage personas, a vibe they explored on 2019's full-length Melt Away. They have continued to evolve, embracing darker, atmospheric textures on 2020's Hyper Romance and 2023's Derealised.
Formed in 2016, Jadu Heart features singer/multi-instrumentalists Diva-Sachy Jeffrey and Alex Headford. The pair first met in their early teens, when Jeffrey moved to Headford's village. It was while studying music together at London's BIMM that they formed Jadu Heart for a school assignment to write songs in character. For the project, they created alter egos (Jeffrey became Dina and Headford became Faro), wore 3D printed masks, and created a comic book, all of which added a layer of theatricality to their Wanderflower EP, which they posted online. The EP made its way to producer Mura Masa, who signed Jadu Heart to his Anchor Point label and released Wanderflower in April 2016. Soon after, the duo decamped to the French countryside with John Calvert to record the Ezra's Garden EP, which was released that September.
Just over a year later, Jadu Heart returned with the single "Harry Brompton's Ice Tea" and "U Never Call Me," a collaboration with Mura Masa. Both tracks appeared on their full-length debut, Melt Away, which arrived in 2019. Following a move to Bristol, the pair delivered their sophomore full-length, Hyper Romance. Co-produced by Guy Sigsworth, it found them moving away from the masked mythology of their previous work and exploring a darker, more textural sound informed by '90s-style alt-rock, grunge, and electronica. Throughout 2022, they released a handful of tracks, including "Cocoon," "I Shimmer," "Freedom," and "Blame." All of these lead up to the release of the duo's third album, 2023's Derealised. ~ Matt Collar & Heather Phares
