Product Description
Comedy legends Bud Abbott and Lou Costello encounter one of Universal's most unforgettable monsters in Abbott and Costello Meet The Invisible Man. Recent detective school graduates Bud and Lou are minding their new business when accused killer Tommy Nelson (Arthur Franz) bursts into their office. Proclaiming his innocence, he convinces the two to get him to his beautiful fiancée Helen (Nancy Guild). Just as the police arrive to investigate, Tommy injects himself with invisibility serum being developed by Helen's uncle. Tommy convinces Lou to go undercover as a boxer to help expose the real killer. With Tommy's unseen assistance, Lou reluctantly goes into the ring as "Lou the Looper" for one of the most hilarious fight sequences ever filmed.

"Mexican Hayride" (1948) showcases Lou Costello's brilliance at physical comedy. Every time he hears music, he has to dance the samba. His attempt at bullfighting is hilarious. However, Bud plays a bigger heel than usual, making him a very unsympathetic character. I give this movie 3 stars.
"Abbott and Costello Meet The Killer, Boris Karloff" (1949) is one of my favorite films. The Lost Caverns Hotel is the perfect setting for this murder mystery/comedy. Dead bodies keep turning up in different rooms and, in one especially funny scene, two corpses play bridge with Abbott and Costello! The scene in the lost caverns with the bottomless pit is scary and surreal, resembling hell itself. I have to give this movie 5 stars.
In "Abbott and Costello In The Foreign Legion" (1950), Bud and Lou are wrestling promoters who travel to Algeria to bring back Abdullah, a proud wrestler who refuses to lose any scripted matches. Bud and Lou are tricked into joining the Foreign Legion, avoid getting killed, encounter many mirages, and manage to save the day. I give this film 4 stars.
"Abbott and Costello Meet The Invisible Man" (1951) is another terrific film. Bud and Lou, having graduated from detective school, set out to clear boxer Tommy Nelson, who was framed for murdering his manager. Tommy uses the invisibility formula to avoid arrest until his name is cleared. With Tommy's invisible help, Louie the Looper (Lou Costello) wins the middleweight championship, in one of the funniest fights ever filmed. This is another 5 star film.
"Comin' Round The Mountain" (1951) is my least favorite film in this collection. The scene with Lou and Margaret Hamilton, battling it out with voodoo dolls, is one of the few highlights. Dorothy Shay has too many musical numbers and Bud Abbott, playing a character named Al Stewart, should have sung "Year Of The Cat." At least that would have given him more screen time. I'm afraid I can only give this movie 2 stars.
"Lost In Alaska" (1952) is a moderately funny film. Nugget Joe McDermott (Tom Ewell) is a former sheriff and prospector who finds gold, but loses his heart to a dance hall girl. Bud and Lou save him from committing suicide, after the floozy he's in love with doesn't want to marry him. It's interesting to note how Bud and Lou almost died of heat stroke and dehydration in the desert when they were in the Foreign Legion, only to nearly freeze to death wandering around, lost in Alaska. I give this movie 3 stars.
"Abbott and Costello Go To Mars" (1953) is unfairly criticized as being one of their worst films. Having traveled the globe in their movies, it was only natural that Abbott and Costello go out of this world! When Bud and Lou accidentally fly a rocket and land in New Orleans during Mardi Gras, they assume that they're on Mars. When they actually fly to Venus, which is completely populated by beautiful women, they initially assume they're back on Earth. The Three Stooges also have some similar experiences in their feature film "Have Rocket, Will Travel" (1959). The stooges accidentally fly a rocket to Venus. In both films, the accidental astronauts return to Earth as heroes, complete with a ticker tape parade. Perhaps that's why critics don't rate "Abbott and Costello Go To Mars" highly. This film features sight gags, such as them flying a rocket through the Lincoln Tunnel and making the Statue of Liberty duck, instead of featuring their usual humorous dialogue. I give this film a firm 5 stars. The total number of stars for all of the films is 32. Divided by the 8 movies, that gives this boxed set collection a total of 4 stars.
The Thin Man formula was so well known by now that it was not hard for the new writers to create a new story, this time dealing with corruption in horse racing. Once The Charles's are back in San Francisco again. Oddly, for a series that pays attention to detail (the police lieutenants in New York and San Francisco are played by the same actors in each role), they are no longer living in the house they had in After the Thin Man but instead are esconced in a palatial hotel suite. Instead of a full staff they have Stella (Louise Beavers) to assist them. She, Nick and Little Nicky (Dickie Hall) provide comedy as the film opens.
Nick gets pressured into helping Police Lieutenant Abrams (Sam Levene) when a day at the races turns into an investigation of the murder of a jockey. News reporters, members of organized crime gangs, bookies, secretaries and girlfriends get drawn into the affair as a more murders take place. Of course everyone involved could be guilty and before the end everyone is gathered bin the police station for Nick's usual dramatic interrogation. Of course the murderer cracks and it's Nora who helps save the day. Between times there's a hilarious bit in a seafood restaurant where the waiter recommends sea bass. The usual cast of excellent supporting players includes a young Barry Nelson in a fairly substantial role and Donna Reed in only her second film appearance.
