Teen boys find love when their parents' NASA mission uproots their lives in this sweet debut perfect for Adam Silvera fans.

As a successful social media journalist with half a million followers, seventeen-year-old Cal is used to sharing his life online. But when his pilot father is selected for a highly publicized NASA mission to Mars, Cal and his family relocate from Brooklyn to Houston and are thrust into a media circus.

Amidst the chaos, Cal meets sensitive and mysterious Leon, another "Astrokid," and finds himself falling head over heels--fast. As the frenzy around the mission grows, so does their connection. But when secrets about the program are uncovered, Cal must find a way to reveal the truth without hurting the people who have become most important to him.

Expertly capturing the thrill of first love and the self-doubt all teens feel, debut author Phil Stamper is a new talent to watch.

My emotions over this book could reach space!
Space exploration through the eyes of teenagers who’s parents might be on the next shuttle out! This is a fun, sweet look at NASA on a reality show and Cal who is a teenage journalist fighting with the show runners. It’s more detailed than that with friendships and a cute romance and women who code but I need you to go read it so I won’t give away anything else! I loved Cal and how anxious he was all the time, I really had fun reading this story!

This book is YA fiction, focusing on space travel with a sweet m/m love story woven in. If that sounds like your kind of book; I highly recommend!

I loved the main character Cal and his planning and his unique take on journalism. All the social media numbers and influence was fascinating to me.

I loved the NASA aspect and the twists and turns in the plot I DID NOT see coming!!

I loved the “reality show” angle and the behind the scenes look at all of that.

And I loved Cal & Leon, big sigh! I loved the Leon was honest about how he was feeling and I loved that Cal was making an effort to learn to care for Leon the way he needed to be cared for.

And the best part of all was that all these elements fit together to make an amazing, entertaining and at times educational story!

It’s not just about NASA and it’s not just about Cal, and it’s not just about how journalism is growing and changing in our new age of technology. It’s all of it together!

Wasn’t huge on all of the spacey stuff, but I was totally there for all the romance and insightful wisdom on relationships and general humanity found within this book! There is some solid advice in this book about genuine love and well... I love it! The storyline was engaging but I tapped out a few times, the relationship between Calvin and Leon pulled the weight for me. I do recommend this to other young readers though!

THE GRAVITY OF US might be the sweetest book you read all year. The love story between our lead Cal, social media extraordinaire, and Leon, a fellow astrokid who's trying to find his way, is adorable and comforting. I want to squeeze them both into stardust because I love them so much! Where this book shines the most is in its insight and empathy. Stamper's characters are complicated and nuanced, and bring to light the varied experiences people can have with anxiety, depression, the difficulties of the spotlight, and much more. None of these characters are perfect, but they are all trying, and doing so (in most cases) with love. Pair all of that with a space race (get me even MORE excited about the Artemis missions, why don't you??), a reality show (with DRAMA), and a stellar execution (✨✨✨✨✨), and you've got a book to love to Mars and back.

I think that fans of YA lgbt fiction such as Simon and the Homosapiens Agenda" will probably have a wonderful experience reading Phil Stamper's "The Gravity of Us." For a first novel it's pretty solid: it has an intrepid, bigger-than-life main character, an intriguing suburban setting of NASA, and thoughtful themes about mental health and the difficulty of knowing yourself in a world of social media capitalism.

I had a few problems with the story, though. The love story at the book's center lacks chemistry and feels sort of forced. The prose is pretty generic and the plot is formulaic, unfolding without any surprises. Ultimately, I just didn't form an attachment to the story's characters. I felt disengaged for large chunks of the story. I typically enjoy just a handful of YA books each year, but this is one that I regret the time I spent reading it. For a story with similar characters and themes but far greater ingenuity, humor, and depth, I recommend "Red, White, and Royal Blue."

I finished this book in about a day and absolutely adored it. The romance was so soft and syrupy and careful and EXACTLY what people should be reading if they want an escape. The chemistry between Cal and Leon was not only believable, but incredibly compelling. It tackled a few heavy subjects with grace, including anxiety, depression, panic attacks, etc. I really appreciated how Stamper took his time with developing their romantic relationship, as opposed to plunging them straight into a "love at first sight" scenario that I see too frequently in YA. The relationship aside, Cal had a very strong voice, and his development was both realistic and fun to watch! I do wish that we had maybe seen more of Cal and his father, but really, it's such a small nitpick and doesn't detract from the story - if anything, it's another compliment, because I just wanted to read MORE haha. I was so sad when I finished it! Ultimately, it's a wonderful, quick, and fluffy summer read that I will definitely be revisiting in times of frustration or heartache. I highly recommend it!!

I enjoyed this book WAY MORE than I was expecting (seems to be a trend with me lately; yay for low expectations)! I listened to the majority of it (the narrators do a phenomenal job bringing the story to life) and I honestly didn't want to stop listening/put down the book. Cal was vaguely problematic (as most teens are apt to be by nature of that time in their lives) but I still liked him. The book is fast paced and I loved the inclusion of science, as well as the way it touches on modern journalism, social media, and reality television. But more than anything, the way that anxiety and mental illness are dealt with resonated with me. I was especially moved by the way Phil Stamper communicated anxiety through physical symptoms and descriptions - it made it feel very real and palpable way. I definitely look forward to reading more from the author. 4.5 out of 5 wine glasses.

The basic plot of a Mars Mission and a teen with such a high social media following seemed improbable and contrived and I struggled to keep reading.
I am glad I did keep reading though.
The love story wasn't so much about the story as much as it felt more like an infatuation with little about why they were in love.
So much angst and drama and anxiety and depression. It all tended to distract from the story itself.
I did read it over the course of a weekend so it was worth getting involved but I did not come away with any real warmth for any of the characters and will likely not reread it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Phil Stamper - The Gravity of Us - novel - outstanding craftsmanship
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 28, 2023
This month I read the latest two novels by Phil Stamper and loved them so I decided to buy their first two.

The Gravity Of Us is listed as Stamper's first novel and is aimed at the YA market. As with their other novels, I really do feel that the quality of the novel is suited to all adults, not simply young adults.

I was bemused how anyone could create a gay novel amidst a fantasy background of a NASA mission to Mars but Stamper not only succeeds, he nails it totally! I was engrossed from the first page to the last and his main character, Calvin Jr (better get the junior in) was beautifully written.

The writing style is conversational and easy to read, the scene developments have been crafted expertly, and the entire story is wholly credible. This is definitely a debut novel that Stamper should be proud of.

Great book, great story, I can only say ignore the YA genre and read it no matter what stage of adulthood you might be.
