First off you're getting Makita's trusted craftsmanship in their product and although you may pay a bit more for the name, they've built their name to be trusted. Makita tools also come with some of the best hard shell cases to keep your new tool protected which is always a huge plus for me.
The sander has a speed selection dial that goes from slowest of 1 to the fastest of 5. This feature alone is worth every penny. Hard wood? Crank it to 5 and melt away the wood. Softer wood? Put it down to 3 and be confident that you won't dig into the wood. I just used the sander on about a 1.5-2 to very gently soften the edges of a 45º rip cut and it worked perfectly.
The power button is actually a hold-to-stay-on trigger but there is a button above the trigger that will keep the sander on after you let go of the trigger. Even without keeping it on, the trigger offers no resistance and it's effortless to hold down while sanding, but the keep-on button really is a plus.
The sander comes with a quick release handle that surrounds the middle of the base for two handed operation. This is such a great feature and allows two handed use and saves the strain on the main arm if this feature wasn't included. Again, big surface area? Hard wood? No problem! Crank that dial up to 5, put a 40-80 grit paper on there grab this sucker with two hands and let the sander do the work.
The base is a standard 5" hook and loop base that accepts any paper that has the soft end portion of hook and loop attachments. I even found a 400grit "paper" at a big box store that makes the wood soft as a baby's bottom. It's actually not paper at all, it's sort of a soft screen but it grabs the hook and loop base with no issues.
There is seriously zero to complain about this tool. It has cut back so much frustration and probably hours of work and muscle strain. Trust the name. If you're in the market for a sander, this is the top of the heap.

The random orbital action seems to significantly decrease the possibility of over sanding and burning the wood. In any event the risk seemed much less than a belt sander. Also from reviews of belt sanders, there seems to be less risks and problems when using this type of sander. This also has a variable speed switch from 1-5. The instructions give you guidelines for what speeds to use for certain jobs. There is also a button you can push that allows you to take your finger off the trigger, like cruise control. Just pull on the trigger and it releases the button and gives you manual control. If you use the cruise button, you can very comfortably sand with one hand on the top of the machine. You could just use the trigger grip, or you could use the trigger grip and the removable handle. It is well designed for comfort and to decrease fatigue. There is very little transferred motion to your hand and this means the sander does the shaking and not you.
I purchased the Mirka 23-615-AP 5-Inch 8-Hole Assorted Grit Dustless Hook-and-Loop Sanding Disks with the sander. I used the 80 grit disk to level out some plywood sub-floor before putting down some laminate. The sander was quiet, amazingly powerful, easy to manage with one hand, and relatively clean. It was great to have the "hook and loop" method to attach the disks so that I can either reuse them or easily switch out disks when going from a heavy grit down to a fine grit. The disk was very easy to install and was about 1/8-1/4 inch in diameter larger than the sanding base. The lip seemed to dissolve away during sanding and this may have been part of my inexperience using it. The sander quickly dispatched of the job. The bag was half filled when I finished and I vacuumed it clean. Almost all of the dust gets sucked up through the eight holes in the disk and I did not notice dust coming away from the circumference, but I also had the vacuum on. The holes did not get clogged up during my job. The disk held as if it were glued.
Most of the sanding was initially done with very little pressure. With a little pressure the work goes very quickly.
I'm overall very satisfied with this. This is a solid and well built feeling machine; not cheap and plastic feeling. I'm looking forward to using this on small jobs I previously used hand sandpaper for. I don't think I will be hand sanding much in the future.
I was trying to sand out scratches on my 24 year old Avonite kitchen countertop. I have a 20” x 20” extra piece to experiment with. I intentionally put some scratches in half of that extra piece. I started with 5” - 400 grit hook and loop sanding disc, moved through each grit until I got to 2000 on my 5” Makita orbital sander I cleaned the piece between grit changes. Absolutely no problems with the sand paper. But only doing ½ of the 20”x20” piece with a Makita 5” orbital sander. It did seem that the sand paper did load up with a white dust from the Avonite pretty fast. Especially the lower grits numbers. I had a nice satin finish but it was duller than the original polish on that extra piece where I had not done any sanding. I then tried a 5” hook and loop orange foam polishing pad with Meguire’s 105 compound and a light spray of clean water. I only used four tiny drops of the Meguires. The final results are fantastic. Scratches completely gone and the half where I scratched the piece now has a polish that matches the original polish on the Avonite extra piece. I then did my countertop the same way and we love the way it looks. I almost spent 100s for a professional to come in and redo the countertop. I also almost spent 100s one a 7” polisher.

This Makita replaced a Rigid that failed due to a design flaw. It was so loud and vibrated so much, I simply looked for another brand instead of getting it fixed thought their lifetime agreement.
Low vibration vibration transfer. Perfect balance. Switch is recessed, accessible and awesome variation of speeds. Handle is so nice.
More power than needed.
I am very impressed. My only gripe is the dust collection is average. Fine dust escapes the bag.
Nothing a vacuum attachment can’t fix.
Money well spent. One of the nicest wood working tools I have owned in over 30 years.
