4.1 4.1 out of 5 stars 2,316 ratings

From New York Times bestselling author Karina Halle comes a delicious saga of wealth, luxury, and scandal—and the wicked secrets of success behind an envied family dynasty.

The Riviera means indulgence—if you’ve got money. For Sadie Reynolds, a down-on-her-luck student, the Riviera means dingy hostels and back streets. When a wrong turn puts her in jeopardy, the last thing she expects is to be saved by the most handsome stranger she’s ever locked eyes with. When she later wakes up in a luxury suite with a Mediterranean view, she’s in the tender care of her rescuer: Olivier Dumont, France’s most eligible bachelor, billionaire hotelier, and heir to the Dumont fashion fortune.

Olivier also owns his reputation for scandal. But Sadie is unlike any woman he’s ever met. Her humble persona and wild innocence promise real passion. He’s promising Sadie something too: anything she wants. From Bordeaux to Cannes to Paris, Sadie’s past in America is swept away and replaced with a fantasy too good to be true.

Pulled into Olivier’s orbit of wealth, glamour, and excess, Sadie discovers that the Dumont dynasty comes with a legacy of wicked secrets. And Olivier’s secrets may be the most damning of all…

Karina Halle is a screenwriter, a former music & travel journalist, and the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, & USA Today bestselling author of River of Shadows, The Royals Next Door, and Black Sunshine, as well as 70 other wild and romantic reads, ranging from light & sexy rom coms to horror/paranormal romance and dark fantasy. Needless to say, whatever genre you're into, she's probably written a romance for it. When she's not traveling, she and her husband split their time between a possibly haunted 120 year-old house in Victoria, BC, and their condo in Los Angeles. She seems a bit boring in her bio but I assure you she's a big ol' goof in real life. For more information, visit www.authorkarinahalle.com.

The most delicious French soap opera!

The most delicious French soap opera!
"I can feel myself being drawn to him like the stars toward a black hole."Discretion is smoldering drama in the French Riviera and I did not want this story to end! Olivier and Sadie's story captured my attention from the first chapter. It's fast paced, sexy, thrilling, and full of suspense.I can tell that this series is just going to get better and better as it unfolds. And with Karina Halle's classic style of mixing travel with writing, you can't help but feel completely immersed in all things French! It's really a stunning book to unfold.

I adored Karina Halle's "Discretion." The love story between Sadie and Olivier was romantic, sweet, and oh-so-sexy, and there was plenty of intrigue and family drama to keep me turning the pages quickly. I hated to put the book down when real life intruded!

What I love the most about Karina Halle's books is the emotion that is present on every single page. The characters are so real and relatable, and I can go from laughing with them one minute to crying with them the next. That was particularly true of this book and its main characters, Olivier and Sadie. I found both of them to be well-developed and incredibly likeable, and I couldn't help but root for them to find a way to outsmart Olivier's uncle and end up together.

You wouldn't expect Olivier, with his wealthy, privileged background, to be such a genuinely good, nice guy, but he is, and he's exactly what Sadie needs after what she went through with her mom in her childhood and later with the terrible way her ex-boyfriend Tom treated her. But Olivier needs Sadie too. She's like a breath of fresh air for someone in his position, because he is used to being surrounded by models and socialites who just want to use him for his money and position. Sadie doesn't want any of the trappings of Olivier's wealth; she just wants HIM.

Sadie and Olivier certainly faced their share of challenges in this book, but I appreciated that they never doubted each other or their love. They just kept moving forward, adjusting to things as they happened, until they finally found a way to make their relationship work.

I am very much looking forward to the second book in this series to see what happens next with the Dumont family. Surely this can't be how things end with Olivier's uncle and cousin Pascal! Somebody really needs to bring those guys down...

I've never read a Karina Halle book before and I usually don't go for soft romances. I also know from reviews that for some this book fell short. But, all in all, I actually really loved Discretion, in that type of way where you can see the hiccups made by the author but forgive them and go on. I also know I might be prejudiced as the first part of this book takes place on the French Riviera at the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc which I've stayed at and have wonderful memories of. So all of that section was very vivid and life like for me and I immensely enjoyed reading it as the backdrop for these two getting to know each other.

It starts with Sadie - an American college student backpacking her way through Europe about to leave Cannes to catch a train to her next destination. But she never makes it to the train station after being followed, attacked and mugged, only for a car to come to a halt and somebody to come to her rescue. And that somebody would be Olivier Dumont - 30 years old, hot as sin, billionaire hotelier and part of the Dumont family and heir to the Dumont family fashion house:

"You buy a Chanel to show the world you’ve made it. You buy a Dumont to show yourself you’ve made it."

Olivier immediately takes it upon himself to help out the poor college student, first by taking her to the hospital to get her fixed up and then giving her accommodations in his hotel. His is a world of models, social climbers and people who are attracted to him because of what his name is. But with Sadie, who he instantly feels an affection for, there is no recognition, no gold digging and when she does google him and find out who she's dealing with, there is absolutely no change in her. He is simply Olivier - the gorgeous guy who rescued her and spends the first few days with her while she recovers from her injuries. For Olivier this is like catnip and the first time he's felt liked just for himself and his attraction to her runs deep also.

"I don’t think I’ve ever met any girl so stubborn before, though that’s probably part of the reason why I’m so taken with Sadie. As callous as it sounds, I’m used to snapping my fingers and having a lineup of women at the ready, so the fact that now she knows who I am and still needs extra convincing to stay makes her an even more enticing challenge"

Yes, it's true, they fall fast but I would say it was insta-lust before love for each other in the south of France but that didn't really bother me either - it's hard not to down there when you meet someone who you connect with so I was able to swallow that.

The rest of the book takes place back in Paris with his highly dysfunctional family - half good and half absolutely horrible. In the prologue, Olivier has been caught 10 years prior by his uncle in a compromising position and signed something that is now back to haunt him with a deadline counting down quickly. This is held over his head the entire story, even with his relationship with Sadie. Was it a strong enough threat for Olivier to have given up so much in his lifetime? For me, I would say no, I was expecting more. For Olivier, coming from only good and being an honorable guy I suppose the author felt that the shame of it being made public was enough to hold him in check. That still didn't totally wash for me.

Either way, from the moment they get to Paris the story moves from a mere love story to a little more suspense, who's zooming who and betrayal, blackmail, power dynamics and action. Sadie and Olivier are still very much the center point but the other facets are a good 50% of the rest of the storyline after their initial 'honeymoon' period.

BUT for all the little pieces that didn't quite live up or fit into place , I'm still gonna be a total mush and four**** star this because I absolutely fell in love with Olivier and would quote him to the high heavens if this wasn't already too long as it is!!!

P.S. - the pieces left untied I hazard to guess come to fruition in book 2 - Seraphine's (Olivier's sister) book....

I ignored other reviews and decided to read it anyway because the plot sounded romantic. It starts off romantic but quickly deteriorates into family feuds and intrigue - and not well done. The H is a weak character, comes across a little stupid and easily manipulated. The mistake he makes is not good, but I don’t think it’s so terrible that he allows himself to be blackmailed for years and betrays his own family. Wouldn’t it have been less damaging to have the truth revealed than the alternative? That part never made sense to me. I kept thinking that his uncle and cousin would be outed or the plot would come back on them, but at the end of the book they are still victorious. Was this meant to be a cliffhanger so we’d read the next book? Unfortunately, I don’t care enough to continue.

I love Karina Halle's books, this one is no exception. It's a fun, easy read that brought many smiles to my face. Even laughed out loud a few times too. The connection between the characters feels genuine, not forced or boring. I really enjoyed it. 👌

I adore all of Karina Halle's work so it’s no surprised that I was engrossed by "Discretion." The love story between Sadie and Olivier was so unexpected, romantic, sweet, and oh-so-sexy, and there was plenty of intrigue and family drama to keep me turning the pages quickly.

Sadie Reynolds is an American college student backpacking through Europe. She broke up with her cheating ex and her funds are low. Now, Sadie is off to her next destination–Spain. However, on her way to the train station, Sadie gets mugged and attached and is soon saved by a very handsome Frenchman named Olivier.

Olivier Dumont is a rich man coming from a wealthy family whilst Sadie barely has even a dollar to her name. He doesn’t just save her, she saves him. Two opposites from two different worlds - Olivier brings her into his lavish life... but at the same time he needs to keep her safe from his vile and manipulative uncle and cousin.

You wouldn't expect Olivier, with his privileged background, to be such a genuinely good guy, yet he is, and he's exactly what Sadie needs after what she went through... Olivier needs Sadie too...
‘Our lives are made up of nothing but moments. But I want to live in every moment with her.’

She's like a breath of fresh air for someone in his position, because he is used to being surrounded by models and socialites who just want to use him for his money and position. Sadie doesn't want any of the trappings of Olivier's wealth; she just wants HIM.

‘Two days of spending almost every hour in each other’s arms, within each other’s touch. Other than the time he had to jet off to Saint-Tropez for a meeting, we haven’t left each other’s side. It’s like we’ve fused in some way I never thought possible.’

I have a feeling Disarm, book 2 will bring the next chapter in this intense family’s saga.

4.0 out of 5 stars Two words Olivier Dumont 😍

Karina Halle always takes you on a journey through her books, this time Its France where we meet Olivier and Sadie. The story starts in the French Riviera traveling on to Nice, Paris and Bordeaux. The settings are so well written you feel like you’re there with the characters and you can almost smell the roses, grown lovingly for their scent and not their longevity, and taste the food prepared by Oliviers chefs.
I’m in love with Oliviers tortured soul and even though Sadie was on hiatus from men after her last relationship ended she couldn’t ignore the connection she has with Olivier. Follow these two as they journey through France but also through their emotions and discover what secret Olivier is keeping and why he’s made the decisions he’s made through his life.
I loved Discretion and honestly can’t wait for the other books to be released.

4.0 out of 5 stars 3 1/2 suspenseful stars

I’ve said more than once in my reviews “I don’t do YA, and I don’t do suspense” Discretion by Karina Halle is suspense and even though I knew that I started reading. I was okay with things, even liking the characters and storyline until 70% when all the suspense-y stuff came to the fore and I skimmed right to the end. I do think that (Dumonts book 1) suspense-y stuff will continue and have conclusions in future books in this series, which is not to say that this story felt unfinished, or remotely cliffhanger=y I just felt like the baddie hadn’t been dealt with as he should have been. But hey, what would I know really because I’m too busy skimming through the icky stuff to get to the HEA to know what really went on.
