Product Description

Since starting Spyderco we've been told our knives are different, peculiar, even out there. All true. Thinking beyond established knife industry barriers allowed us to introduce new and radical innovations to the knife culture including: One-hand opening, serrations on a folder and a clip to attach a knife to a pocket. We didn't go into business to rake in a mountain of dough we're here for more selfish reasons- indulging our passion for creating knives. Spyderco is definitely out of the norm in the knife industry in our dedication to researching and developing fresh, improved and better performing materials all with function and reliability being key. Someone once said to Sal Glesser, Spyderco's owner, "You must design in the dark because your knives look so strange." True again. Our recognizable appearance is a result of designing ergonomic functional tools rather than applying lipstick and nylons to a pocketknife. We may look curious, homely, whatever, but we'll never be called unusable or undependable. Making knives that consistently deliver reliable high-performance requires an ongoing commitment to testing. In our million-dollar testing facility we examine edge retention with a CATRA machine, look for rust development with Q-FOG, check the force needed to open and close a knife. We also repeatedly test for stress, wear, optimal heat-treating and actively search for higher quality, performance enhancing steels and materials. As a customer you probably don't think about this, or much care, but it allows us to put forth a promise. When you purchase a Spyderco you are buying a high-quality reliable cutting tool designed and manufactured for peak performance and ergonomic comfort. Those Who Know Carry Spyderco.

I absolutely love this knife. This is my first Spyderco manufactured in Taichung, and I can see what all the fuss is about. The fit and finish is excellent, really a "cut" above (see what I did there?) your typical production knife. The design in and of itself makes this knife worth buying. I imagine it was difficult to get the traditional Puukko knife design to translate to a folder, but Pekka Tuominen pulled it if brilliantly. The handle ergonomics, blade shape, and proportions all scream Puukko. Everything about it is so clean and modern. When the blade is closed, it's nearly flush with the handle, a change from the typical Spyderco. The gentle s-curve that starts at the base of the handle and runs along the spine all the way to the tip of the blade adds just enough shape to the knife to prevent an overly boxy appearance. The cutout in the handle to allow you to access the thumb-hole is a nice touch. It's the perfect shape; your thumb will sink right into the right spot to open/close the blade.Functionally the knife is outstanding as well. The blade is very smooth opening, which was a concern I had because of the buried thumb hole. But sure enough, you can flick it right open with little effort. The lock engages reliably and seems very sturdy, although it takes a decent amount of pressure to release it (better than it disengaging too easily). Im very glad that Spyderco decided to add the micro bevel to the blade, as I imagine the edge was very weak without it. With the bevel, the blade geometry is excellent. I touched up the bevel to about a 60 degree inclusive angle, which is pretty close to where it was at to begin with. You'd think this would be too broad to be an effective slicer, but the primary grind is so aggressive that it still slices through paper effortlessly, and because of the 60 degrees still has great durability. Perfect! The handle feels great in hand; it fills the hands but certainly isn't bulky, and the texture is very attractive and grippy. Now for the critiques. First, why S30V? It's a boring choice for such an exotic knife. Why not go with some sort of laminated blade steel, which is common among Scandinavian fixed blades? S30V is a tried and true steel that's easy to touch up, very balanced, but still boring. My second critique would have to be the blade sharpness out of the box. This is the dullest Spyderco I've purchased. Not a big deal to me because I own a KME system, so I fixed that problem easily, but if you suck at sharpening it might be an issue for you. Lastly, the knife is bulky in pocket. Comfortable in hand, but a little thick in the pocket. Those three critiques do not detract enough from the knife to take off a star in my opinion, it's still an amazing knife! Get one while you can, especially now that the price has come down. You won't regret it!

I find it hard to adequately put in words how incredibly beautiful and exquisite this knife is. Its such a simple and elegant design.almost sterile. Much like the sleek ,modern furniture designs coming from Scandinavia ,this knife provides everything required of a modern, high quality folding knife and does so with a seemingly absolute minimum of materials and hardware.

Its sleek, austere ,minimalistic style hides the sophisticated and extremely precise engineering lurking just beneath the beautiful G-10 scales.

The gorgeous brushed/satin finish of the blade works perfectly with the matte finish of the scales which also have a brushed or straight wood grain type texture. The simple, squared corners and overall geometric shape is softened slightly by a graceful, flowing ,barely perceptible S-curve starting at the upturned blade tip and culminating at the slightly down turned handle butt. There is so much to look at and admire,i almost forget this is a functioning tool, not just a work of art. Trust me,as gorgeous as this knife is,it functions just as well.

The .177" thick by 3.5" blade pivots on phosphor bronze washers and hidden pivot shaft and is perfectly centered. It is buttery smooth with the perfect level of resistance and has absolutely zero play in any direction. The full flat grind culminates in a very fine micro bevel and is just shy of "scary" sharp. The spydy hole blade opener is rather small but still allows a reliable purchase and opening. The blade has hidden or internal stop pins consisting of C-shaped cam tracks milled into both steel liners and a pressed in stop pin in the blade that rides in the tracks. Its extremely strong and further adds to the simple minimalistic design as nothing is visible when viewed from top or bottom. Only the blade, smooth back strap or spacer and the liner lock can be seen. The effect is incredible.

The liner lock is fairly heavy and locks the blade tightly with zero play. The entire liner engages the blade to about 40% of blade. A very strong and precise lockup. It disengages smoothly with moderate tension. The pocket clip is very simple, blends pretty well with the design and works very well. I would have preferred it to have a recessed mounting point but as is it is fine.Overall an extremely well designed, well built knife.perfectly serviceable for light to med use tho i plan to keep in my safe only taking out to admire and maybe light household cutting chores. Its just too beautiful to get banged up.Its not intended for serious work anyway.the ergos and grip traction just wont allow for heavy use. But thats ok,we all have other knives for that. This one is special. It really is a work of art and is extremely highly recommended as a collectors piece or gentlemen's or dress folder. Absolutely one of my favorite knives and sure to be yours too.Truly a stunning, modern example of a classic Finnish pukko executed with flawless precision as Spyderco does best.

As an architectural/industrial designer I love the clear lines and well proportioned detailing of the Nilakka. Two things that I'm not happy about, that however will not change my top rating:

1. The color is not as in the pictures. I've written about it to Spyderco, telling them that in ALL their advertising and videos I saw slight orange, light brown, birch-like, (Scandinavian feel) handles/scales.
The overal feel for me was like an integrated design where all details "organically" fit in the same (Scandinavian) concept. The real color however is a dull, greyish, medium dark brown...
The response I got from Spyderco was that they mention (somewhere) in their advertising that it is a prototype... Yeah right, good try, not. Show the product, not an illusion, surely they've made enough of them by now to show the real colors, or does their marketing team also like the birch color better?

2. The clip. To me it seems that the clip has some effort to fit in the concept but was left as it was for budget reasons. Just a little more thought would have integrated it in the whole design.

Nevertheless, as I said, the total of this Nilakka styled folder is too good for me to change it from a top rating.

The Nikakka is a very sturdy well made knife with a hefty feel to it. The only drawback is that the edges on the handle are quite acute and it does not have a smooth rounded feel to it. I have removed the pocket clip and find that by having it lay in the bottom of my pocket, it feels better than when it is clipped to the side of the pocket. Otherwise this is a great knife and I am looking forward to using it more!
