After doing some research, I found out that the 7 hole has the SAME RANGE as the 12 hole, which excited me greatly, since I wanted an Ocarina that looked true to the game as well as being playable. Now, they do have a ceramic one for the Ocarina of time, both in 7 hole and 12 hole variants, but they are $108, which I certainly didn't want to spend on my first Ocarina.
This Ocarina bridged that gap, by being affordable, looking true to the game, and being playable. Speaking of playable, how does a $20 plastic Ocarina sound?
Now, generally, I don't trust cheap instruments, as they have a tendency to break, be uncomfortable, or just plain sound bad, which was my experience with my first guitar.
However, this Ocarina, after using it for about a week, sounds AWESOME. For a plastic Ocarina, it does a very good job at sounding like an instrument, rather than a toy. That said, it IS very loud. This Ocarina, while sounding great, only sounds great when you put enough air through it. At lower pitches, it can sound great with minimal air, but the higher notes forced me to use more air than I expected to, meaning this is not a quiet Ocarina.
If you are in an area with a lot of people who may get annoyed at your instrument playing, do not get this.
The only other problem is condensation. If you play this for a little while, it will collect moisture, and needs to be blown while covering the middle back hole to eliminate the sound. (I then usually take a microfiber cloth to dry it up.) This can be remedied by holding your hands over the Ocarina for a few minutes to warm it up and then the condensation only collects after 30 minutes or so, once it warms up. However, it is still an awesome Ocarina, especially for $20.
This is by far, the best Ocarina on so many levels. If you are looking into learning how to play an Ocarina, (a 7-hole one anyways) or just want to get it as decoration, for $20 this is an AWESOME deal. I highly recommend it, and since it uses the hole pattern of the 6 hole pendant Ocarina, it stays familiar.
Thank you Songbird, for making an affordable, good looking, and great sounding Ocarina for all to play.
Fast forward a decade later. I was looking for a gift for my nephew's twenty-first birthday that was hopefully less than $30 with prime shipping because stupid me had forgotten that his birthday had been at the end of the week and I was low on cash but still wanted to find him something I thought he would enjoy. By chance I stumbled on this Songbird replica and instantly remembered the company's name, and seeing how it was plastic and would be the least likely to break during shipping (since I didn't have any time to waste for shipping emergencies, again, plus he would be less likely to accidentally break it or have his cat knock it off a shelf) it seemed like the perfect choice.
I didn't take any photos of it when it came in, but Songbird truly dominates with quality. The OoT gift box was gorgeous by itself and the ocarina was beautifully painted with very few flaws - just a few spots from crafting of it, which some of them gently wiped off or were almost completely unnoticeable. It came with a small booklet to reach you the basics of playing it as well as a few LoZ songs, including the Song of Time on the back of the box.
He hasn't fully learned how to play it quite yet, but he seemed to enjoy the gift and said the sound was pretty close to the game although a tiny bit off to him. Plus it makes a great LoZ collection piece.
The photos advertised are as accurate as they come and I couldn't be more pleased with the product. I might even have to order one for myself to play with one of these days~
Aesthetically, this Kokiri Edition replica is beautiful. Unlike many "replicas" on the market, it is the right Zelda blue, has an accurately scaled Triforce symbol on it, and has the correct hole pattern.
The band around the mouthpiece is actually a sticker, which could potentially come off if one were rough with it. The adhesive seems pretty strong though, so I doubt it will simply from aging.
Several other reviews commented on, and I have noticed as well, that there are some tiny "scratches" on the ocarina's body. This is normal, and not sign of damage or abuse! Plastic ocarinas have these tiny marks because of the way they are made. My Focalink also has them. You will not find a plastic ocarina without them. If this is a dealbreaker for you, I would recommend getting a ceramic ocarina instead.
The greatest benefit to this plastic edition is how hardy it is. I wanted to use a Zelda replica for cosplaying, but was horrified by the thought of it getting broken if I tried to take it out to use. This ocarina solves my problem elegantly.
A note on shipping: I did purchase my ocarina along with one other item, and they were packaged together. However, this ocarina comes in it's own special box, and in my case that box was enveloped in packing air bubbles and placed within another box for shipping. In spite of it being plastic and hardy, they made sure it arrived in perfect condition.
Overall, I am extremely satisfied with this ocarina and may buy a second, perhaps even third one on later dates as gifts for other Zelda fans I know.
