Colgate Eco Classica III Dual Firmness Mattress

A crib mattress is more than a sleep surface.

Selecting the right crib mattress is as critical as choosing the right car seat.

Why? Because a crib mattress is more than simply a sleep surface. It’s a growth and development center. Your baby will be spending 70% of his or her time sleeping during that first year.

Who better to trust your family to than Colgate, a third generation, family-owned and operated company started in 1955.

    Eco Classica III

    Handcrafted in the USA

The Eco Classica III is Colgate's best selling crib mattress for a reason. The quality of the 6 inch thick, dual firmness mattress at this price makes an ideal mattress for the growth and development of your child.

    • Certified Organic Cotton Cover
    • Eco Foam Infused with Plant Oils
    • CertiPUR certified safe foam
    • GREENGUARD GOLD Certified for no harmful emissions
    • Dual Firmness For Use Through Toddler Years
    • Light weight for easy sheet changes

    Multi-layered Dual Firmness Design

The Eco Classica III's Dual Firmness (dual zone) design allows you to easily flip the mattress as your child transitions to the toddler stage.

Your infant will sleep on the firmer side. While this may not seem like it would be comfortable to you, infants need a firm, flat, even sleeping surface to maximize their development, strengthen their muscles, and ensure breathability in the crib. Babies need resistance and a firm surface to push up, turn and eventually stand up on.

Once they start to transition to a toddler, you can flip to the softer side of the mattress. This provides greater comfort for your toddler, while maintaining the level of safety that Colgate is committed to providing.

What is the Standard Crib Mattress Size?

    Two Finger Test

The goal is to have the crib mattress fit either very snug or moderately snug in the crib. A good rule of thumb is that no more than two fingers of space should exist between the side of the mattress and the crib frame. Any more than that, the crib mattress is too small and could be a suffocation and entrapment hazard.

    Snug = Safe

The Federal government regulates the size for all standard crib mattresses via the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 (CPSIA).

The minimum size is 27 1/4 inch x 51 5/8 inch with a thickness not exceeding 6 inches.

    Safety is our #1 Priority

Colgate not only meets, but exceeds all government safety standards and we were instrumental in establishing additional, voluntary industry standards to keep babies safe. We take great pride in our craftsmanship and exacting manufacturing standards that have produced the world’s best crib mattresses since 1955.

Our crib mattresses come with a lifetime warranty.

    The Baby Ninja: 4.5/5

Are you looking for a simple looking foam crib mattress with not-so-simple features that is especially made for added convenience and durability for your little baby but one that doesn’t compromise comfort?

    Baby Gear Lab: 4.5/5

A well constructed crib mattress that is light, eco-conscious, and less costly than many of its competitors.

    Best Crib Mattress Reviews

As a new parent, you naturally want to provide your baby with the very best that money can buy, and the Colgate Eco Classica III fits the bill.

    Crib Mattress Hub: 4.7/5

It is not too hard or firm, but is perfect for my toddler’s nimble body. The high quality foam makes it a good choice.

    Product Description

    Product Description

The Eco Classica III Crib Mattress by Colgate Mattress is a 6" thick, dual firmness, foam crib mattress, with an organic cotton cloth surface that will last throughout the infant and toddler years with your eco-friendlier family. Like all Colgate Mattresses, the Eco Classica III Crib Mattress is certified by the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA) and meets or exceeds all applicable American Society for Testing and materials (ASTM) and Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) safety standards.

    From the Manufacturer

The Colgate EcoClassica III is from the Colgate Cradletyme Naturals collection of eco-friendlier crib mattresses, pads, and accessories. The EcoClssica III is a high quality, lightweight (9.6 lb) , orthopedic style dual firmness Infant / Toddler foam crib mattress. The firmer supportive infant side is very firm. The less firm, more comfortable toddler side is also firm to support toddler bodies but, less firm than the infant side. Mattress fits all standard size American cribs and toddler beds. An overall 6" mattress thickness means tight fitting sheets. A certified organic cotton cover with a waterproof backing puts organic cloth closest to baby and the waterproof backing lets nothing into the mattress. Inverted seams provide for a sleek appearance. All foam in this mattress is CertiPUR-US certified to be safe, high quality foam. All foams are also eco-friendlier because they are made with (non-food) plant oils replacing petroleum based oils. The Colgate EcoClassica III mattress passes all federal and state requirements for flammability and chemical composition and has been GREENGUARD certified to have no harmful air emissions. Lastly, the mattress is made by Colgate, The Crib Mattress Specialist, who has been making mattresses and trusted by parents for over half a century.

Our new baby has not used this yet but it seems like it is going to work really well. There is hardly any odor to it which was a big concern for us as some of the others we looked at had a very noticeable smell. The dual side is great. The only thing that really let us down was the stitching was coming loose in several places and the filling was coming out too. We contacted amazon and the sent us a new one. Unfortunately it had the same issues.

Reviewed in the United States on March 3, 2021
I’ll be honest. I was not expecting to go thru stress and research when trying to decide which crib mattress to buy for our newest family member. Every time we have got a mattress for the somewhat normal size people in the past, it was the same process. We put it off forever, and then, when we can’t take it anymore, we head to the local mattress store where we lay down awkwardly in the show room. All the while, I am sure a very nice in real life, salesperson stares at us while we try to decide in a few moments which mattress I am going to spend “a 1/3 of my life on”, right? Not very comforting and relaxing, but pretty straightforward.

But now, when trying to decide for our newest, much smaller (not to mention, no offense, not very articulate) family member – it became exponentially much harder. Car seats, I could handle. I read everything I could, found the safest one I could find that would not cost as much as the first semester in college for my newest lovable, but slightly wallet-draining bundle of joy. But mattresses? How do I know it is the safest choice, the smartest choice, the most comfortable choice, and also be environmentally friendly – maybe it would be more pleasant to lay awkwardly in a store and pretend I was asleep.

We looked, we read reviews, we asked around, and while we were certainly the life of every social gathering and conversation with our mattress talk, we did find some truths that I thought I should share…

First, we wanted it to be safe. We kind of figured that every mattress that is on the market must be safe, or it wouldn’t be on the market – right? And I guess that is true, but like car seats, there are some pretty big differences in a product that “meets requirements” and ones that meet and exceed the requirements, certifications, etc.

Second, we want it to be comfortable. Listen, when baby sleeps, life for all lifeforms in the home is much better.

Third, we wanted it to be healthy for our baby and the environment. If this small mini-person is going to be in this bed all the time, we want it to be safe and comfortable, but also be made of good “stuff”- no smell, natural materials, etc.

Forth, Value. Look above at comment about wallet-draining, there are a lot of things to buy for this newest, non-income producing member of the family.

After all our discussions and research, we came to the conclusion that there are several good options (and lots of not-so-good-options) to choose from – and spoiler alert (not really, this is a review, after all), we picked the Colgate Eco Classica III.

We looked at lots and kept coming back to the Colgate. This crib mattress business is new to us, but not to them. It is a family owned in the good ol’ USA for 3 generations. I am sure they have forgotten more about mattresses then I will ever know. (and remember, I know enough to bore people to tears, just ask me)…

Safe - It checks all the marks for certification and safety (that whole meets and exceeds thing)

Comfortable – ok, didn’t sleep on it personally, but (another spoiler alert), our pride and joy sleeps soundly. It is waterproof but doesn’t have any “crinkly” or “plasticky” feel. It has what they call a “Dual Firmness” design, which is actually very important (foreshadowing value conversation). Cover is made of certified organic cotton. And, We LOVE that this mattress can be flipped over to a softer side that is perfect for toddlers. No need to buy another one for a toddler bed. It is pretty sweet.

Enviro-stuff – (my term, not theirs, but maybe I should trademark). The core of the mattress is made of something they call “Eco Foam”, it is made of plant oils and is a CertiPUR certified safe foam. Cover is made of certified organic cotton. No smell, no emissions (from the mattress, the baby – now that is a different story)

Value –There are other mattresses with a similar feature set to the Colgate, but to get comparative comfort, durability and Eco-stuff, they seemed to all be pretty expensive. The Colgate just seemed to have everything we wanted at a decent price. It also helped knowing that Colgate is a 3rd generation crib mattress company. These people have been doing this a long time. I trust that.

Ultimately, we decided on the Colgate Eco Classica III because it “checked all the boxes” – quality, safety, Environmental, and made by a company that people trust. Now, if they would just make a “adult” mattress for us, it would keep us out of the awkward mattress stores forever…

I bought this mattress on the recommendation of a couple friends in my mom group, and have only had it a couple days but love it so far. The infant side feels firm enough without being too hard, and it does not feel like it will ever lose its firmness. It fits snugly in our Pottery Barn crib (but not so snug that it's very difficult to get in and out) and is lightweight, so I can easily take it out myself to change the sheets (which was a must since I'm on the small side). The stitching at one of the seams seemed weird – most of the seam was inverted all the way around, except for one end of one side, which stuck out. I thought maybe I had gotten a defective one, so I called the number on their website and the customer service agent explained to me that they need to do it that way to be able to put the stuffing in and then sew up the rest. You can even see this in the main product image – the seam sticks out on the bottom. This made sense and I'm fine with it. Great mattress and great company! Reasonably priced too, compared to other organic crib mattresses on the market. This will now be the mattress I recommend to other mom friends.

This is a great mattress. We agonized over the baby's mattress for a couple of weeks. We couldn't decide whether to go with organic or not. Most of our friends did not buy organic mattresses and were perfectly fine with what they chose for their babies, but we didn't want to skimp on a decision like this one, but also didn't want to go crazy as the pricing on some of these mattresses varies significantly. We read reviews for a more popular and more expensive mattress, but those reviews seemed pretty average and we weren't convinced. We heard that Colgate was #1 for the regular mattress, and read the reviews. This version didn't have many reviews, but the ones it did have were favorable. Given that the price, at $200, no tax and free shipping, wasn't that much more than the regular version, and the reputation of the Colgate mattresses, we decided to take the chance, and if we weren't happy, we could replace the mattress. Well, we're very happy. There was no smell to the mattress when we received it, and the cotton cover is very nice. It's firm and our baby sleeps very comfortably on the mattress. Just like a baby's mattress is supposed to, it fits snugly in our baby's Pali crib. It is difficult for me to lift in and out of my baby's crib when changing sheets, even though the mattress doesn't weigh that much. I have De Quervain's tendinitis, so everything I do with my wrists is painful. I recommend getting Clouds and Stars zip sheets so that you can avoid the extra hassle of changing sheets. I was skeptical about getting such expensive organic cotton sheets, but I now see the hype. Anyway, that's a completely different review. Get this mattress. You won't regret it!

Baby isn't here yet so I can't tell you how he likes it, but I LOVE it. I bought this mattress to replace a Simmons Beautyrest Sleepy Beginnings mattress. I originally wanted a coil mattress because I thought they were more firm and had a cooler temperature, but when the Simmons came in, it seemed to bunch up way too much and the sides were not firm. I am so scared of SIDS and wanted a nice firm mattress so I sent that one back and after doing more research and seeing the Colgate on so many top mattress sites, I decided to try it. It is amazing! Truly lightweight but so firm! After putting it in the crib, there is no part of the mattress that seems less firm than another. It fit amazingly in my davinci crib. The corners also fit great without leaving any spaces. The mattress seems cool and lightweight and after putting the sheet on, doesn't bunch up a bit. I love that it has organic materials. I feel better knowing my baby won't be breathing in harsh toxins. I'm a little nervous about how waterproof it will be, but it says it is and I'm sure a mattress protector will calm me on that end. I would recommend this without a doubt.
