I found this kit quite easy to use. I activated the kit, collected my sample, sent it in, then sat back and waited. Meanwhile, my husband decided he would like to try the test as well, so he ordered a kit, collected his sample and sent it in. He got an email from Ancestry within 10 days saying they had received his kit. And I was still waiting. A week later, he got an email with his ethnicity results. And I was still waiting. Finally, 6 weeks after I mailed my sample in, I finally got an email from Ancestry that they had received it. According to their website, such delays are common—you can mail 2 kits in on the same day from the same place, yet they can be received and processed weeks and weeks apart.
As you complete the informed consent forms for the test, you need to carefully consider how much information you are willing to share with the Ancestry research projects. As they describe on their website, they request permission to use your sample and DNA data anonymously for any type of health-related research, for scientific or commercial purposes, now or at any time in the future. If you are not OK with any part of this, you can decline consent. And still get your sample analyzed. Just be sure to check the right boxes.
I was amazed with the DNA family matches from our samples. My husband’s grandfather was adopted as an infant. My husband’s DNA sample turned up cousins from his grandfather’s birth mother, through which we were able to find out more information about his birth family. In the past, I had done extensive research on my family, adding 5 or more generations of ancestors on my tree. My DNA testing results turned up a list of hundreds of long-lost cousins, noting which of them had shared ancestors who appear on my family tree. It’s really cool to see how the DNA matches combined with other people’s family trees confirm relationships as well as provide additional sources for ancestry research. The test also noted a parent/child relationship between me and my mother—I didn’t even know she had submitted a sample to Ancestry.
The health results are quite limited, however. Basically, all they report on is carrier status for:
--BRAC1 and BRAC2 (breast and ovarian cancer)
--Lynch syndrome (colon cancer)
--Cystic fibrosis
--Sickle cell anemia
--Tay Sachs
--Cardiomyopathy
--Familial hypercholesterolemia
--Familial hemochromatosis
--Familial thrombophilia
They also give some rather odd results about genetic markers for genes affecting nutritional status. They informed me that people with a gene marker that I have tend to consume more caffeine, so I should be mindful of my caffeine intact. Hunh? There’s some sort of weird association-not-causation relation going on there. Especially since I’m hypersensitive to caffeine so I never touch the stuff. Given how basic and limited the health results are, they are probably most useful if you know there are people in your family with one of these diseases so you might be a carrier, or if you’re adopted and don’t know any information about genetic diseases in your birth family. If you are interested in other genetically related diseases, such as Celiac or Huntington’s disease, you won’t get the results from this test.
Overall, this kit is simple to use but you may need to wait quite a while to get your results. This kit is great for people researching family history. The health portion is most useful for those interested in the specific markers for diseases listed above.
