Flip 3 vs Anker SoundCore Sport XL - JBL Comes Out Barely Ahead

Flip 3 vs Anker SoundCore Sport XL - JBL Comes Out Barely Ahead
I came to Amazon to buy a JBL Flip 3 based a widely positive reviews and a desire to have a speaker that I could use outdoors without worrying too much about sudden showers, dust and other hazards of the elements. While searching for it, however, I came across Anker's newest entry, the SoundCore Sport XL. Given the price, my general satisfaction with Anker, and Amazon's solid return policy, I decided to give both speakers a try. I'll note that the SoundCore Sport XL is probably more comparable to the JBL Charge 2 given that both units have a USB port to let you charge your phone or other device. The Flip 3 doesn't have charging output port.If you want the shortest possible answer: We're keeping the Flip 3 and giving the SoundCore XL as a gift. But it was almost a coin toss about which was going to stay.Sound:I wanted this speaker to have enough volume for modest outdoor gatherings (both meet that criteria, though the Flip 3 is probably a touch louder) and sound good enough that I wouldn't mind having it playing in the house. I'm also biased against today's tendency for consumer speakers to emphasize bass response over every other frequency range. If you like your music boom-y, I'm not going to like the same speakers that you will.My wife and I listened to each of them across a wide range of music from classical to folk to hip-hop to pop to hard rock, trying to get a sense of which we liked better. The answer, as it turned out, was "it depends." The Flip 3 is definitely not as "flat" audibly as the SoundCore. Within the limits of what you can do with a small speaker, the Flip seems to emphasize the bass and treble ends of the spectrum more. High treble even sounded unnaturally "sizzly" for a couple songs. In others, the vocalist almost seemed a bit buried under the rest of the mix--though never disturbingly so. (We're talking nuance here, and your ears may have a different experience.)The SoundCore is definitely more flat sounding. It doesn't produce as much bass as the Flip, but that's not necessarily a bad thing, and it never had the sizzling issue in the treble. It just sounds...even. People used to the punchy sound emphasized by consumer speaker and headphone manufacturers, however, may find that the music lacks a bit of life.Which did we prefer? Ultimately it depended on what we were playing. Folk, country and music from the 70s and 80s that clearly was mixed with the intent of playing over the radio we often preferred on the SoundCore. More current pop, rock, and hip-hop sounded better to us on the JBL. In the final count, the JBL came out on top, but not by much. I've been listening to both for a few days now, switching back and forth every so often, and I find that I'm inclined toward the JBL, but I certainly don't mind the SoundCore.Size and Build:The SoundCore Sport XL is about 7 x 3 x 1.75 inches and wrapped in what feels like very sturdy, slightly rubbery plastic. It's definitely heavy in your hand and makes you feel confident that it can hold up to some rigorous outdoor use. The biggest issue with the design is that I found myself constantly grabbing into the bass port on the back, which includes a metal cover over a stretchy membrane for a passive woofer. I have no idea if pushing on the cover would damage the passive woofer, but it was disconcerting. The Flip 3 is 6.5 x 2.5 inches and covered in a dense fabric with hard plastic ends. It's slightly lighter in the hand, and the cylindrical shape makes it more comfortable to pick up and carry around. It feels solidly built if not quite as tank-like as the SoundCore. The Flip3's dual bass ports are on the ends, out of the way unless you have a very odd approach to picking up cylinders.

Love this speaker! I really think JBL hit one out-of-the-park with this speaker, and it definitely outperforms the other bluetooth speakers that I currently have.

I currently own a UE Boom, Bose Color SoundLink and a couple other "off-brand" speakers.

The JBL Flip 3 outperforms all of them. My biggest issue with bluetooth speakers was that I could never find one that was loud AND had great battery life.

UE Boom: The UE Boom is a loud speaker, for sure, but it has a couple of things that have always kept me from really loving it. The battery life is first and it's just plain terrible. The one I have lasts maybe an hour before giving me the critical-battery message and shutting off. It's also very heavy for a "portable" speaker. The weight difference between the UE Boom and the JBL Flip 3 is pretty substantial. When you carry it around with you, you will notice the difference a lot more than if you just plop it on a table, so that may not effect everyone. The UE Boom "app" is (IMHO) useless. I don't like the interface and quite honestly, I just want my speaker to connect to my phone and play music.

Bose Color SoundLink: Quite simply....it's a nice speaker indoors, but not so much outdoors. Not what you'd expect from a Bose product. Battery life is ok but not great. Not a very portable form factor.

That brings us to the JBL Flip 3. I love just about everything with this device, minus one con that I'll mention below. First the pros:
    - Battery life is extraordinary compared to other speakers I've used in the past. I don't know how long it will last yet because it hasn't died during a single session yet! The longest I've used it is 5 hours and didn't have the first low-battery indication at all. Simply wonderful

    - Form Factor. I've always liked the UE-Boom-ish form factor as it's very practical and can fit just about anywhere. Love the form factor on this JBL Flip 3 and it's smaller and lighter than the UE Boom making it even better.

    - Sound Quality. Of course, all the pros in the world wouldn't matter if the sound quality was bad. It's definitely not. I think the sound is very clear, indoors or out. Crisp highs, bass that you can hear without distorting the sound, and clean mids. Absolutely love it.

    - Chaining speakers. The fact that you can chain multiple flip 3 speakers together is a great feature. We have a rather large back yard and when you are entertaining , people tend to spread out. Adding multiple speakers allows you to reach across a much larger area, or just simply make it louder in a smaller area.

Great purchase, would recommend it to anyone!

All purpose/all weather: This was a must for me due to the main reason why I wanted a speaker so I can listen to music while being outdoors or going to the pool and not having to worry about it being ruined if it got wet. I have had this item for a little over a month now and I have been outside with it multiple times and took it to the pool and have had no worries even when it got a little wet at the pool.

Price- I was looking for a speaker that was between $50 to $100 and the JBL Flip 3 was originally listed for the price of $99.95 and it was on sale for $63.50. This was a huge bonus for me because you can’t beat a good deal.

Wireless/Bluetooth: This was also a big one for me because when having to carry around an aux cord it is very annoying because you may not have one on you all the time and its one more thing to carry around. I can connect all my devices that have Bluetooth to the speaker so that is also a positive for me. I found out that you could connect up to 3 smartphones or tablets, which is pretty cool. I have yet to have a problem with the speaker, it is super easy.

Sound: My brother and I are currently remodeling his house and while we are working we wanted some music and playing it from my phone was not loud enough. I wanted something loud enough for us to hear while still working. The speaker did the job really well, especially inside.

Weight/size: The speaker is super lightweight it only weighs one pound and is about the size of a pop can but a little longer. This makes it really easy to transport and carry with you anywhere. I like this because when I go fishing or camping I am already carrying enough weight, so one pound is not much and is barely noticeable.

Rechargeable battery: Another bonus because no one wants to carry a speaker around with a cord hanging off of it trying to look for a plug in just to be able to play music. The battery also lasts roughly ten hours, really beneficial to me when I go out doors and won’t be near an outlet for awhile.

Color: The speaker comes in eight different colors and most of them are vibrant colors. This is nice to have some sort of selection so you don’t only have to get plain black.

Protection plan: You can get a protection plan for three or four years for under ten dollars. That is really nice of the company to do and lets you know that the company feels confident in their product.

Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 25, 2018
I managed to pick this up at a decent price when the new generation speakers came out and I'm so happy I got it. It's super portable and easy to use.

Sound quality is very good, but don't expect Bose level quality. I can sound scratchy at full volume and even normally it can sound ever so slightly echoey. Note that I usually use it for podcasts and for music, it's absolutely fine.

Battery life is very solid, I use it intermittently, perhaps 3 hours a day and it seems to last the best part of the week. Comes with a gorgeous orange charging cable (no plug, but you have a USB plug somewhere). The USB head is smart and is bi-directional because of a rubber flap inside. Getting the charging port open is a little tricky, but that's the price you pay for it being splash-proof, which is great when I want to take it to brush my teeth.

It feels robust, but the speakers at either end are exposed and although they're protected by raised bevels, I'm concerned when I accidentally touch the skin. It's not a massive problem the way I use it though.

Looks great in the black with the little orange brushed metal logo.
