It took me a minute to figure out the proper way to wear them -- I think the label goes up by the top of your forehead, facing in a way that someone looking at you would be able to read it -- this leaves the speaker wire hanging down your back. The speakers were pretty much in the right position, but I did have to nudge one of them a little to get it in front of my ear.
My first experience with them was listening to a guided visualization/meditation, binaural ASMR style (ASMR stimulates a relaxing sensory response in some people). Right away, I was very impressed with the speaker quality. I would say it is as-good as my $200 on-ear pair, but far and away more comfortable for sleeping. The headphones become one with the pillow and are almost "invisible" in that sense.
I say "almost" because the headband itself, while a perfect fit for me (average size women's head), was a tiny bit uncomfortable and warm, but it's a minor detail overall and I can't really think of a better way to get speakers to stay on my head (except to try the molded in-ear headphones, which I've yet to shell out for). I'll add that I have tried LOTS of different headphones and never really found any of them to be comfortable for more than 30 minutes or so. The SleepPhones were far more comfortable, sounded great, and did not bother my ears at all! Given how comfortable they are, I am curious to try a headband made from a lighter fabric for daytime use. For night-time, however, the soft plush felt is the way to go, IMO.
Moving on... the cable is braided and although thin is nice quality and doesn't get twisted up like some of the thicker cable styles. There cable is long enough to place your playing device (iPhone, etc.) on the bed-stand, but I would say it is just long enough for this purpose and you can't really move. While you can purchase aux cable extenders, an extra foot of length would be nice to have and I can't see how it would add much to their manufacturing costs. I think this point has been made by other reviewers.
When my meditation ended, I woke up enough to take these off, meaning I did not sleep through the night with them. Judging by my experience, I expect that they would be comfortable for many hours of sleeping/wear and the only problem would be tangling yourself in the cable when moving in your sleep. I have fallen asleep with regular headphones (my v-moda on-ear) and the extended pressure causes discomfort on the ears that can last for an hour or more. I think the SleepPhones would even be suitable for side sleeping since I turned by head to the side while wearing them, and the speaker is so low-profile that it just blended into the pillow.
Overall, I have to give 5 stars when comparing these to the general quality of what's out there. You can tell a lot of attention went into making these and the price is reasonable too. I hope they hold-up because most of my cheaper headphones lose sound in one speaker after a while. If they last a year or even six-months of heavy use, I will be very happy and will have considered this money well spent for enabling my relaxation time.
- Speakers. The sound quality is great for sleep purposes. It is NOT going to replace your "high-fidelity" headsets, but for sleeping it is very good. And has the acoustic range is very good as well.
- Headband. The fleece headband is very comfortable, one-size-fits all. That is a small trade-off as I have a small head and the band can slide just a bit during the night, but nothing to bad. The speakers are set flat in the band and rest comfortably to my head both straight to the pillow or if I choose to sleep directly against the mattress. Also a trade-off, the speakers are "fixed" in the headband, so I sometimes find I can't quite get both speakers to line up in both ears, but I can center them equally relative to each ear and use the volume to balance the level. I also must say the fleece is fairly "warm". I sleep with a fan blowing directly on me anyway, so I can balance my "body temperature" for sleep, but I could see where some people might find that uncomfortable in a warmer climate.
- Construction. The cord is really durable...the wire is embedded in a nylon/protective cord vice the traditional plastic/rubber cords on most headphones. As such, it is very durable and seems less prone to the "shorts" I got in traditional cords as I would toss-and-turn during the night. I was worried that the cord could be a "choking hazard"...but I have found that it actually is pretty good and maybe better than sleeping with traditional ear-buds because it comes off the "back" of the head band (base of my neck when worn down or over my skullcap worn upward), so I can run the cord away from my head towards the headboard of my bed and it has a enough cord to be forgiving to some tossing and turning at night.
Great product. I have slept with it now for almost 6 months and look forward to many more restful nights for both myself and my spouse.
Top reviews from other countries
Amazon has a lot of cheap-seeming speaker headphones and pretty much all of them seem to have issues with build quality, sound quality, comfort, etc. AcousticSheep seems to be the only brand on Amazon.ca that has a reputable, persistent business behind it, with an actual website, an actual warranty guarantee, and actual customer service. I'm hoping that this reputation will hold up!
The pros, so far:
- 1 year warranty, and customer service!
- I can sleep!
- Takes a little getting used to, but I've gotten to a point where I am comfortable side-sleeping with the speakers near/on my ears. I don't wake up numb-eared like some other sleep headband speakers make me.
- Decent (but not perfect) coverage as an eye mask.
- Soft, good-quality fabric
The cons, so far:
- When I want to lie on my back, the velcro closure and/or the device inserted into the back of the headband are rather bulky and are uncomfortable after a few minutes.
- Taking the speakers out to wash the headband is going to be a pain, I can already tell. Especially with the bulky velcro closure in the way.
- The cord kinks somewhat easily.
The audio:
- This one is difficult to rate objectively, but for my misophonic experience, it's... acceptable. There are variances in my whitenoise audio that I notice, but less picky people probably wouldn't. I, personally, have found I can get past it. There is NO crackle or static so far, however. If you're just using this for music or other audio it's probably totally fine.
So far so good. I hope these last.
