About the Author

Diana Murray is a poet and picture book author whose other books include City Shapes, Grimelda: The Very Messy Witch, and Ned the Knitting Pirate. Diana’s award-winning children’s poems have appeared in many magazines, such as Highlights and Spider. She lives in New York City with her husband, two very messy children, and a motley crew of lizards, snails, and fish.

Bats Langley grew up in Wolcott, Connecticut and attended the Rhode Island School of Design. His art has been shown in galleries in New York City, Los Angeles, Hangzhou, China, and has even been displayed in the United States Capitol building. Mr. Langley has also been a regular contributor to Ladybug and Spider magazines. This is his first picture book. He resides in New York, New York.

    Bats Langley grew up in the dark and perilous countryside of New England. He spent the halcyon days of his youth surrounded by many eccentric pets and relatives, who greatly influence his work to this very day. When Mister Langley was six years old, he was given an honorable mention at the Putnam County Fair for his artistic crayon on construction paper opus, entitled Grandma's Despair. This early success ignited his passion for further artistic pursuits.

    Mr. Langley continued his artistic studies and graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design. Mr. Langley is a regular contributor to Spider, Ladybug, and Cricket magazines, and recently was featured on the coveted October cover of Cicket. His art has been shown in galleries in New York City, Los Angeles, Boston, Hartford, Providence, Hangzhou China, and at The New Britain Museum of American Art and the United States Capitol building. Mr. Langley's art was recently included in the 35th anniversary show at the AFA Gallery in Soho NYC, alongside some of Mr. Langley’s childhood idols, Maurice Sendak, Tim Burton, Charles Adams, Charles Schultz and Dr. Seuss. Mr. Langley's illustrative picture book debut, Groggle's Monster Valentine, came out in January of 2017, written by best-selling children's book author Diana Murray, and published by Sky Pony Press. His sophomore book, Alice’s Adventures in #Wonderland, is published by Woodhall Press and will be released in November of 2018.

    Today, Mr. Langley lives in a tiny, but spectacular apartment in the shadow of the Chelsea Hotel on the island of Manhattan, with his husband, Nicholas, and their two plants, Lily and Idina. Mr. Langley and Nicholas were recently married, surrounded by loved ones, in a dear friend’s haunted castle in the south of France. In his free time, you will find Mr. Langley drawing, painting, sculpting, writing, cooking and watching owls swoop in his backyard, which live in sanctuary on a neighbor's roof. He enjoys ghost stories, biology, medical curiosities, hoaxes, Dutch painting, museum visits, oddities, theater, fashion, old movies and collecting preserved skeletons of extinct animalia. Mr. Langley is represented by Brianne Johnson at Writer's House.

I'm giving the book 5 stars because it is filled with wonderful illustrations and a super cute story. The book did arrive with damage. The corners are frayed and scratched up and the book will not shut all the way as you can see from the photos. The box the book came in was not damaged though, so I'm not sure what happened or how it happened, therefore I did not rate it poorly just in case this was not the seller's fault.

This is a clever antidote to the syrupy valentines that early grade school children often find in commercial packets. The plot is simple. Groogle can't stop eating his slime-worded leaf valentines meant for his best beast friend, Snarlina. Diana Murray's valentines are a delightful take on the traditional made even better by Bat Langley's illustrations filled with slime, bugs, bat wings and snake bows. I couldn't stop smiling!
