The movie follows private detective Cody Abilene, played by Darby Hinton, as he investigates a case involving a missing person and stolen diamonds. Along the way, he encounters a cast of colorful characters, including a bevy of beautiful women, a bumbling sheriff, and a dangerous crime boss.
What makes Malibu Express so enjoyable is its unabashed embrace of the cheesy, over-the-top aesthetic of '80s cinema. From the silly dialogue to the gratuitous nudity, this movie is a time capsule of a bygone era of filmmaking.
And of course, there's the stunning Blu-ray transfer that really brings out the vibrant colors and crisp visuals of the movie. The picture quality is top-notch, and it's clear that a lot of care was put into the restoration process.
But perhaps the best part of Malibu Express is its sheer entertainment value. It's a fun, lighthearted movie that doesn't take itself too seriously, and it's the perfect choice for a movie night with friends or a lazy Sunday afternoon.
So if you're a fan of '80s cinema or just looking for a fun movie to add to your collection, then Malibu Express is definitely worth checking out. It's a blast from the past that will leave you smiling from ear to ear.
Mill Creek Entertainment gives "Malibu Express" a long overdue special edition blu-ray release which presents the movie in ample style. Transfer wise it features a 4K widescreen restoration in a 1.78:1 ratio utilizing the AVC codec. The film gets a high bit rate staying in the mid to upper 30's. While they had hoped to have restored the film from the original camera negative, unfortunately the negative has been lost over time. So they used a film print instead for this blu-ray disc. Going in with that expectation, the film does look the best it ever has on disc to date though it is obvious that they had to use a film print. Considering what they had to work with, the movie still looks good and very watchable. It is a big improvement over prior DVD releases overall.
Sound is presented in 2 channel master audio and English subtitles were included for the hearing impaired. A digital code is also included.
Extras wise they ported over an intro to the film from a prior DVD release along with a 43 making of featurette also from a prior DVD. An informative audio commentary track is also included featuring Andy Sidaris and his wife Arlene Sidaris who did not produce this film but did produce subsequent films of his. There are also trailers included for Malibu Express and 11 of his other films too.
Considering this disc is going for a bit less than 12 dollars, taking into account the effort they went through with the 4K restoration and transfer (albeit from a film print as the negative has been lost) along with some nice extras, fans of "Malibu Express" or just fans of 80's exploitation sleaze in general should pick it up without hesitation. Mill Creek Entertainment did a fantastic job with this blu-ray and should be highly commended for their efforts. It represents terrific value for your 80's blu-ray buying dollar.
Movie Weakness: Very few for a B-film! I know ol' man Sidaris would have loved to have had more than just 1 explosion.
Similar Movies: "Cannonball Run" (plus T&A), "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas" (minus the singing and dancing).
Carltonz Call: Good and funny film definitely worth watching! Just be mindful that it is a non-serious B-film. Definitely worth purchasing if you are a Sidaris fan!

… but enough of me. When rich, playboy private investigator Cody Abilene ('Firecracker's' Darby Hinton) is hired by a government intelligence operative to investigate who is selling computer technology to the Russians, he finds himself in all manner of barely clothed shenanigans. From a crooked socialite family to gun toting tech-spies, this grinning gumshoe is flanked by trouble on all sides, whilst still finding the time to bump uglies with the likes of various scantily clad Playboy models and one Sybil Danning. Hey, its a tough job but somebody's gotta do it...
Director Andy Sidaris' 'prequel' to 'Hard Ticket' is a fairly routine private dick story enlivened by weirdo humour and copious amounts of nudity. Lead Darby Hinton's Cody character is a clear lift from Tom Selleck's 'Magnum P.I.' but where that star had charisma to spare, Hinton falters with a numbskull screenplay that plays like an R-rated episode of 'Scooby Doo' but with added boobs 'n butts. Sure, Hinton is fine as the lead, but the low rent 'porn-lite' production values take away anything he brings to the table... Sybil Danning puts in nothing more than a cameo and she’s fine - even though she only seems to be around to show off the many facets of her amazonian figure. Hey, I'm a guy and not complaining at all, but if honest (like ''Hard Ticket'') these movies are very sleazy and in some places, feel downright uncomfortable to watch. I'm not a prude and love all things B-Movie and 'off-Hollywood', but there are weird moments that could be viewed as questionable especially when seen from today's viewpoint. If you can see it in context (alongside its light comedic tone), then perhaps you can gloss over some of the unsavory aspects of the film. However, I felt it was worth a mention as I viewed this and 'Hard Ticket' back-to-back with my friends and we all felt that some of the content was a little bit, shall we say ‘off-putting’…
Mill Creek's Region A Blu-Ray sports a great 4K transfer (for the time and obvious budget) with a vibrant audio, alongside a plethora of solid extra specials features such as: Behind-the-scenes featurette, audio commentary and a fun intro with the director and Julie Strain as they discuss the film and its brilliant poster art, which I felt was a really cool touch. For fans of the director, this is again a 5-star release (and kudos to Mill Creek for the effort they’ve put in) but for me its simply another 2-starrer (I almost feel harsh giving this comedic actioner a hard time but the out-of-date attitude hold it back). All in all, if you have a broad mind and happy to go with the flow, then this could be a cracking beer 'n dips night in - but for others who are easily offended, its probably wise to stay on the path of more mainstream fare.
