In 1965, 16-year-old Robin Lee Graham began a solo around-the-world voyage from San Pedro, California, in a 24-foot sloop. Five years and 33,000 miles later, he returned to home port with a wife and daughter and enough extraordinary experiences to fill this bestselling book, Dove.

Perfect for my dad for Father's Day! Thank you! The only comment I would make is that the cover states that there are 32 pages of photos, but I only found 2 pages.

What a great true story. Writer is good at explaining his experiences well. He also shares his true emotion throughout the book. It must have taken a lot mentally to start out at 16 that way

Such an amazing story of adventure, courage, fate and the American spirit our youth seems to have lost. This story needs to be retold and shared with the new younger generations

"Dove" is an incredible seafaring adventure that kept me hooked from start to finish. The book's enthralling narrative of a solo voyage around the world is perfect for those seeking thrilling escapades on the high seas. I would have given it five stars, but the used book's condition with bent and torn covers brought it down to four stars. Nevertheless, if you're passionate about exploration and courage, this book is a must-read.

This book is great for teenagers that are interested in reading. It shows that as a 16-yo, the world is open to be explored.

In the early seventies, while it the fourth grade, I won a writing contest on what I wanted to do with my life. My English teacher bought me this book. It did two things. It inspired my love of reading, and inspired my love of travel. This the true story of a 16 year old boy's five year journey around the world in the mid sixties in a small sailing boat. I'm fifty seven now and wanted to read the book over again and see if his book did in fact inspire me. It surely did and many things in the book led me to my current life. Thank you Robin Lee Graham.

I first read "Dove" when it first arrived in our local library. I was thirteen years old and entranced by what I'd read. This unique "coming of age" non-fiction account, inspired me along with hordes of others to pursue the kind of adventure that Robin Lee Graham wrote of in "Dove". For both blue water sailors and those dreaming of such experiences, this story and the movie that followed is to sailing, what "A River Runs Through It" and its movie was to fly fishing.

I have no doubt that global blue water cruising had increased in popularity as a result of Graham's voyage and his subsequent book that reads like a classic coming of age novel. After all these years, and having read nearly all the other books written by globe trotting sailors, a spark of nostalgia for those days in the early '70s inspired me to read it again. I'm really glad I did, because this one stands out among all the others. Not because it was one of the first of its kind, but because Graham made it personal. His account was of a boy coming of age during an extraordinary adventure in both idyllic and life threatening situations - all before the age of GPS and real time communications.

If you're a fan of coming of age literature or have an itch for armchair travel, this story will do more for you than satisfy the itch. It will inspire you to get out there and test yourself and perhaps discover true happiness.

Started reading this to a class of 4th graders after a friend recommended this book. At first the kids really enjoyed the aspects of adventure in this novel. The lulls in the book proved to be a bit boring, like when the wind stops and he starts talking to his cats while drifting around at sea. The children seemed to loose interest in the author's loathing loner doldrum ramblings. Eventually I put the book down and didn't finish it, and I don't think the kids miss it much.

Every kid my age read this story and what an adventure it was.... how the heck did that kid (Robin) talk his parents into letting him go on that trip alone..WOW.... mine would never said yes...its a great story, even after all these years... last I heard Robin and his wife Patti are alive and well living in Montana...now in their 70's. Wish them all the best

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful love story

This is as much a love story as it is a story of sailing and world voyaging in simpler times. How I would have loved to be exploring the world as young and carefree as Robyn in the 1960's.

This book made me want to drop everything and go back to my Ala Bianca, currently moored in Gibraltar. Another few weeks and we’ll be sailing east towards Malta.

This book kept me sane. It reminded me of the things I did when I was 16/17, travelling, meeting people of different cultures and customs. It reminded me that although most of us get caught up in “doing the right thing” there are some who never give up and continue use to live the dream.

To say this is inspirational would be to belittle the reasons why Robin sailed around the world. Even he couldn’t express the real reasons, but it is a compulsion. Something you have to do. Safety, responsible behaviour, should do, shouldn’t do, all becomes irrelevant. Yes there’s a price to pay, but it comes down to what you are willing to pay, because the piper will always need to be paid in the end.

This book definitely made me yearn back to my late teens and early 20s in a way that no other book has and brought back some fond memories. Thank you for sharing your experiences with me.
