At 80+ years of age, Robert Redford produced and stars in this film. If you know Redford you probably know he is very adaptable at playing a wide variety of roles. You may also be aware of his efforts as a producer and sponsor of the annual Sundance Film Festival at promoting “cutting edge” artistic film endeavors - especially from international independent producers.
With the above in mind, this film is far from the typical Redford or typical cops and robbers film. If you’re looking for the Robert Redford of Butch Cassidy days or for an action packed film, you’re likely to be disappointed. What the film is, above all else, is a study of aging. Central is Redford’s character, 80-something Forrest Tucker. Robbing banks is something he loves doing. And he is good at it. Mostly the heists are carried off with a large dose of guile and cunning - and little actual violence.
Casey Affleck plays the role of frustrated detective, always “hot on the trail” of the wiley Tucker - but seemingly always a day late. Through their cat and mouse experiences, it can be seen that a mutual respect and appreciation for one another evolves. The film is slow paced and dream-like. Hair styles, dress and background music take us back to the 70s and 80s.
Some relief from the robbery motif is presented with the introduction of a middle aged widow (played by Sissy Spacek) with whom Redford’s character develops a romantic relationship. Perhaps it is in that relationship that the ever cool-headed Tucker is most honest and at ease - though always the vigilant bank robber on the run. We, the audience, empathize closely with Redford’s character almost from the start. He is our heroic figure - much in the way “Bonnie and Clyde” turned the table on “good” and “bad” several decades ago.
The film comes in at under one hour and thirty minutes., but feels much longer.
If you love Robert Redford, or Sissy, get it,
I enjoyed it, and will probably watch it again.
Mr Redford said he was retiring from acting after this wrapped up so it may be his last movie.
It was tough to see how aged he looks in this picture but it's perfect for the character,
and he still lights up the screen.
There was nothing vulgar, or cringy or overly sad in the movie if you plan to watch it with your kids.
They may or may not enjoy it,
but I didn't recall any scenes that were uncomfortable to watch with my 15 year old son (he did enjoy the movie).
I bought it here because the Blueray + digital copy was cheaper than just buying the digital copy on line.
Recommended.
