Sometimes the truth kills…

The sudden death of Lacy Stillman appears to be nothing out of the ordinary, she was after all in her nineties. But when the richest woman in the county dies a day after she blocked her family from making millions, Zak Waller, dispatcher for the Sheriff’s Office, can’t help but wonder if all is at it seems. He knows the Sheriff won’t open an investigation into Lacy’s death, so if he wants answers, he’s going to have to find them.

Meanwhile Tiff Masterson is struggling with her own family problems. Her mother’s deteriorating mental health, her aunt’s mysterious behaviour, and the missing money from the family Christmas tree farm lead Tiff to have her own questions.

As Zak and Tiff delve deeper into their investigations they begin to unearth long-buried secrets that intertwine the lives of the town’s most esteemed citizens. When the truth is revealed in a shocking twist, Tiff’s world is turned completely upside down. The ramifications affect many of Lost Trail’s most prominent citizens and provide the missing clue to Lacy Stillman’s murder.

Tiff Masterson came back to Lost Trails because she lost her job and her boyfriend broke up with her. She decided to use her savings to travel and when that ran out she wasn't sure what to do. A friend had posted a message on Facebook and said she should come home. When she did come home she was worried about her mother who had lost her son and husband in a matter of months of each other. Tiffs aunt Marsha who was her mother's sister sold her home and moved in with Tiff and her mother to care for them. Then there was Justin who had Hodgkin's lymphoma and never told anyone. Then when he finally said something to his father who was a doctor he had a blood drive for people to get tested so they could find a donor for Justin. One of the people to get tested was Tiff and it turned out she was 100% match. The transplant was better if a sibling was a match but, Justin though he was an only child. His oncologist called him and scheduled an emergency appointment. Justin thought it was bad news but, the oncologist said to him why didn't you tell me you had a sibling. So he found out that Tiff Masterson was his sister. When her aunt found out that Tiff was gonna get tested she told Tiff not to do it. Her aunt was a nurse and knew that Justin needed the transplant in order to try and beat the cancer. But it turn out that Tiff 's aunt was always jealous of Tiff's mother Rosemary so when Rosemary and Justin 's mother had their baby at the same time and place Tiff's aunt switched the babies and gave Tiff's mother a child who had a heart defect. Tiff's mother Rosemary never new because her aunt had talked her into taking something and told her when the baby was born that the doctor just wanted to check him. No one really knew her aunt and the reason Tiff's mother never recovered from her son's and husband's death was because Tiff's aunt was keeping her drugged. It all came to light when Tiff was a match in the blood drive and that's why her aunt didn't want her to get tested. Then when her aunt found out she committed suicide and tried to kill Tiff and her mother to with Carbon Monoxide. But thanks to the ranch foreman insomnia he saw the aunt pull into the garage but not leave. He took a walk and when he came back the aunt's car was still running. She had opened the inside door to the house so the fumes would fill up in the house to.

It’s been a long time since I’ve enjoyed a mystery series so much. Ms Carmichael is an accomplished writer. I like her characters, the story moves along well and there’s no sophomoric scenes between people. I feel lucky to have found this author. I’ve now finished the first two Bitter Root mysteries and immediately bought books three and four in the series. Great writing!

This is book 2 of the series! I thought it was a great read and kept me guessing until the end. I like how the author provides enough details to allow the reader to be able to imagine the town and all of its characters without getting lost in details. I can't wait to read book 3 in the series!

I enjoyed this book as well as the first one in the series. Only problem I had was with time lines. In the first book, Tiff's Dad died 20 years earlier when Tiff was 10 years old. the second book, it was 16 years earlier, but Tiff was now 30 years old. Math wasn't right and little details like that bother me. Otherwise, there was good character development and the storyline kept me guessing right up until the mystery was revealed.

First: You have to read the first book with all the background. Then this one which was a whopper. The plot was amazing, and I'm not going to be a spoiler.......just read the books. I will be going forward with the rest of this very good series of mysteries.

The second book in this series was just as enjoyable, captivating & page-turning as the first. The characters & dialogue are written so well that I was caught up in feeling the pain as secrets were revealed that affected the lives of so many in the community. Evil was so well camouflaged it was hard to see but overwhelming when the truth was revealed. The twists & turns in this book kept me reading until late in the night. I'm looking forward to the next book & continuing the story!

I have never read a book by this author before, but he/she is a really easy to read writer. The theme is engaging and mysterious and at times thrilling, and the characters are all interesting and some of the key characters are extremely loveable. A winning combination, and I don't often say that.
Love all 4 of the books in this series! Waiting for No 5. :)

I love CJ Carmichael's books. The characters are believable and the plots are twisting. Most of all I like to get cozy when reading them as her books have a wonderful homelike comforting setting to them.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Very Good 2nd Book In This Fine Trilogy And I Highly Recommend It
Reviewed in Canada on October 10, 2018
Great! Now after finishing the first two books in this very enjoyable, well written and well edited trilogy I have to say that this book was even better, if that’s possible, than book 1. As other readers have noted the books in this series can be read as standalones but I think reading them in order really helps a reader to better understand many of the characters especially Sheriff Ford and Deputy Butterfield and it’s nice to watch the character growth and attitude and relationship changes in Tiff, Zak, Kenny and Nadine. There sure is a lot going on in the small town of Lost Trails and there are a couple of fantastic and quite unforeseen and somewhat unexpected twists in the solution of the mystery with Zak and Nadine’s investigation again leading to the “Bitter Truth” but this story is very much character driven with the character’s personal lives and problems playing just as much of a role in the story as the mystery itself. I think Ms Carmichael really handles the romantic sub plots very well and the romances are progressing nice and slow and realistically. I got a good kick out of Nadine’s response when Zak told her he’d told Sheriff Ford that he wanted to be a deputy and she said ““That’s awesome. You and me are going to run this town one day, Waller.” Do you think we’ll find out in book 3 “Bitter End” which I have already acquired and is pretty high up on my TBR list

Tiff's homecoming just Isn't working out! Would she be better off back in Seattle but Bitterroot is home, it's where her heart is. Nursing Tiff's ailing mother has been selfless Aunt Marsha 's role for far too long, it's time for Tiff to engage with her Mom again , since the tragic loss of her brother and father they have drifted apart can their relationship be salvaged?
To make matters worse money is missing from the Farm, a close friend is shutting her out and the new farm manager is causing her a few sleepless nights and was the death of a 92 matriarch really from natural causes?
A compelling story of family feuds, secrets and jealousy
