Product Description

The NOKTON 40mm F1.2 Aspherical is a high-speed manual focus lens optimized for the imaging sensors of Sony mirrorless cameras. While retaining a compact size, this lens realizes a world first* as a full frame 40mm lens with a large F1.2 aperture. The optical formula features two elements each with two aspherical surfaces, so you can enjoy reliable optical performance and gentle very out-of-focus bokeh at maximum aperture. When used on a camera with an APS-C sensor, the 40mm focal length is equivalent to 60mm, enabling the lens to be used as a standard lens on both full frame and APS-C cameras. The aperture ring has click stops in 1/3 steps. The lens also features a click stop switching mechanism that enables the click stops to be turned off when shooting video. * As of August 2017 (check performed by Cosina) Main features ■ Full frame Sony E-mount with electrical contacts ■ Enhanced high performance utilizing aspherical lens surfaces ■ Optical design optimized for digital imaging sensors ■ Extremely solid and durable all-metal barrel ■ Manual focus for precise focusing ■ Installed with aperture click stop switching mechanism for video ■ Minimum focus distance of 35cm

Such an exceptionally fun lens to work with
5 Stars
Such an exceptionally fun lens to work with
So I was skeptical when I first got this lens. Although some very good reviews, I wanted to see for myself whether or not the manual focus would really deliver the pin sharp imagery that I was looking for. On a recent business trip I took the lens out for a test shoot. It really did deliver what I was looking for in low light conditions. For those that are looking for a lens that can give You semi static composition and superior performance with a compact lens package, this lens really does deliver. I’m shooting on a Sony A7III. The focus peeking works exceptionally well in low light and it was able to deliver a really amazing balance set of photos with this lens. I have attached several photos that I took at night in very low light conditions. I also tried my Tamron 28 to 75 mm lens. In low light, the focus hunted and the ISO was way too high to be useful, ( don’t get me wrong, I love the Tamron lens as well ). Truthfully, this lens is a lot of fun to use. Be careful of short focal length imagery, the 1.2 focal length will give you very limited background dispersion. Is this worth $1100,? In my opinion, yes. I am very conservative and skeptical when it comes to lens performance. In this particular case, this lens really does perform exceptionally well for the small package and quality construction it has. I truly do love this 40 mm.UPDATE - 5/26So after using this lens in multiple environments I do have to concede that it do not give you pin sharpness. So if that’s what you are expecting, I suggest moving on to Zeiss Batis at 2-3X the price. Also, for live movement you will need to practice as would be the case with any manual focus lens but once you get use to it, it is a lot of fun. But, my affinity for this lens continues to grow. Very pleased with this lens.

1.0 out of 5 stars BEWARE!! THIS IS THE SE VERSION NOT THE DECLICK VERSION SHOWN IN THE PICTURES!
Reviewed in the United States on March 10, 2022
Don't buy this lens if you are looking for the video/film version of this lens with the De-click Aperture. This is what the picture shows but it's actually the SE (Stills Edition) Version with the Click-aperture. The lens is amazing by the way not a single problem there, both versions have the same glass even, but details matter to professionals. So please buy instead from B&H Store and NOT from AMAZON. Last time I make that mistake myself.
