Setup was simple and fast. Install the drives, let it format and run it's integrity check. While the check is running, you can use it. I come from a much older NAS, a ReadyNAS NV+, that was definitely showing its age, but served well for over a decade.
1. It's quiet. I assume a lot of this to do with the drives, but the ones I chose and this unit are whisper quiet. It sits less then 3 feet away on my desk, and the most noise it makes is a barely perceptible rumbling noise when the disk access is heavy.
2. It's fast. Compared to my old system, it's probably 10X faster on file transfers. Yes, it's noticeable that it's not a local disk, but I cannot complain at all about the speed.
3. Easy to setup and use. A basic install of disks and initial setup of the DSM software on it is pretty easy to manage - and it's a tool less install too. For setup, you can dig into it and make it much more complex, but setting up a plex server was simple enough and docker - well that depends on what you are installing. Only warning I have here is be careful how you set up networking. They have a tool that does a security check that warns you of potential problems, but you do not want to expose it unnecessarily to the Internet.
4. SSD Cache helps. It learns eventually what files are most accessed. It's useless for streaming movies - the disks are adequate enough for that - but the metadata comes quickly off the system. Make sure to tell it in the SSD configuration to stream large files off the disks to preserve cache space. I installed this about a week after getting the unit. Since I only have one M.2 card, the cache is for NAS reads only - you'll need two cards for a read-write cache. Turn it off, flip it over and plug it in. Flip it over and turn it on again. Then tell it you want to set it up a SSD and a few clicks later, it's done.
5. Plex: Runs like a champ on this system. I use it to stream media to iOS devices and the AppleTV.
The only complaint I have is that perhaps I should have ordered larger drives to put in it, but that's on me. 2 drive fault tolerance takes huge chunk out of your storage space. After migrating all my data, it was about 40% full. That's about 10+ years or so worth of accumulated data, so it may not be that bad.
My setup:
Synology DS1520+ w/stock 8GB RAM
5x Seagate Ironwolf 4TB drives, formatted SHR w/2 drive fault tolerance. 3.64TB (formatted space) x5 = 18.2TB, 10.9TB useable for storage.
Seagate Ironwolf 480GB M.2 cache card.
Set-up was easy, just open up the NAS and plug it in. Installing the drives (assuming you didn't have to shuck) is also a breeze and they provide extra mounting screws (although I didn't need them), along with setting up the SHR RAID. Make sure you lock your drives or they might fall out. The NAS is in my living room and, so far, it's been quiet and I haven't noticed any noise.
The NAS in general is solidly built, but not too heavy. I bought a USB UPS along with it and the NAS recognized it immediately, and even emails me when backup power is getting used. It's actually how I found out we had a power outage when I was away from the house.
I'll definitely buy another Synology in the far, far future when I decide to upgrade and keep this one as a backup NAS.
That said, I had nothing but problems setting this device up from the minute I plugged it in...don't stop reading and buy another product!
I started with three brand new identical NAS grade drives all of which were recognized and showed "Good" in the DSM interface. The problems began when the device started running the parity check. It would get to between 1-1.5% then go back to zero...two or three times. Finally, reset the device, re-formatted the drives and started over. Things seemed to be running normally for about 20 hours until the consistency check got to 70% then just seemed to stop then and stayed that way overnight. Drives still all said they were good and I could still access the volume. Gave up, packed the unit up and returned to Amazon...who probably now think I'm insane because I just re-ordered the same unit today. After returning the 1520, I bought a different (well known) brand, loaded my drives and powered the unit on. After doing the basic system config the unit almost immediately threw an error on one of the drives. Put the drive in my computer, ran tests, all passed. Put the drive back in the NAS, started over...same drive error. Luckily I had a 4th identical drive, replaced the one giving the error and voila...everything worked perfectly. Why the first DS1520 didn't pick up my drive error (although in all fairness, neither did my PC or the disk utility) is beyond me. The thing I've always like about the DSM's are their ability to "early warn" disk issues. So, I re-ordered the DS1520+ confident that all the issues were related to the bad disk. To be honest, my first thought was a disk issue despite it not being reported.
I should have listened to myself and swapped the discs one at a time to rule it out. Got the disc replaced under warranty and Seagate sent me a follow up that the RMA'd drive failed their tests and showed inconsistent results. I feel bad for returning a product to Amazon that may or may not have been faulty but I didn't want to get stuck with a $700 paperweight.
Many thanks to Amazon for their stellar return policy.
Update: 11/18/2020
Replacement unit works perfectly. Up and running in no time.
Synology make a great product..

I added 2 Ironwolf NAS 10Tb (on SHR), I plan to add 2 more in a near future to backup my PC, phone and laptop.
I also went to the Beta of DSM 7 (to be released summer 2021).
Really nice features and fast but don't do it if you have important data, it's still beta and not all apps are currently on package center.
I installed Docker and PiHole, so no more annoying ads.

Works like a charm
