Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 4-8-The reader is the hero of the greatest video game never launched in this interactive title. Readers step into treasure-hunter Cooper Hawke's shoes to find the secret of Phantom Island. As a plane heads at full speed to crash land, do you choose a grenade launcher or a wingsuit? Plopped down in a world of killer bees and carnivorous plants, readers must solve puzzles, anagrams, and sudoku to move forward on the journey. Collect achievement letters along the way to unlock the secret message at the end of the book. Make the wrong choice, and you're sent back to checkpoints to start over. Face tests of intelligence and logic as you explore volcanoes, ancient temples, and laboratories (think Jurassic Park). Scan explorer William Shandling's diary for clues. Brady's sardonic wink to video game clichés includes second-person narration and obligatory signature weapons. When you die, you always get to start over. High stakes situations-monster chases in tunnels, giant gorillas choking tree houses-can make for random and awkward story lines, but readers will stick with it for the interactive problem-solving and breakneck pacing rather than the plot. Keep a pencil and paper handy to work out clues and keep track of page numbers. Leafing back and forth through the book may prove tricky, and the story could use reiteration of the central premise. VERDICT An engrossing ride for die-hard "Choose Your Own Adventure" fans and video game devotees.-Sarah Webb, City and Country Sch. Lib., NYα(c) Copyright 2011. Review

Folks, let me tell you, this book is ridiculously fun. Like, it's WAY better than it has any right to be. I read it aloud to my 9-year-old son at bedtime, letting him make all the choices and solve all the puzzles. Not only was he asking for more each night... but I was all too happy to oblige! The choices, puzzles, items, plot twists, and boss battles you encounter in the book are straight out of a classic platformer, and Brady does an amazing job at making the book feel like a game. -Jamie Greene, The Roarbots

Dustin Brady's books are a treasure for anyone who is struggling with a reluctant reader. The writing is fun and extremely engaging. As an educational therapist, I work with reluctant readers all the time, and I have had so much success using his books to teach not only fundamental decoding skills but also comprehension. The greatest gift you can give a child is to foster the love of learning, and Dustin Brady has been able to do that with countless children.

My almost 8-year-old loves the Trapped in a Video Game series and was literally counting down the days until this new book came out. I have a lot of nostalgia for the original Choose Your Own Adventure books from the 80s, so I was looking forward to reading this with him.
I’m happy to say that this story blew away our already high expectations! This is absolutely the most fun and inventive choose your own adventure I’ve ever seen. It’s just full of twists and surprises. When you enter the game, for example, there’s an optical illusion that looks like the page is vibrating to let you know the “technology is working.” There’s a section where the villain asks you as the reader a series of question and does a mind reading magic trick right there on the page. It’s even got secret message that unlocks a 20-page online story.
Just like the Trapped series, there were several parts that had us both laughing out loud. There’s also lots of action and suspense that’s all age-appropriate. Something new that this book adds is logic puzzles, which was interesting. I loved watching my son get excited about the puzzles because he felt like he was playing a video game.
If your kids loved the Trapped in a Video Game series, they will adore this one. Even if they haven’t read that one, this is a good place to start since it’s really a spin-off rather than a sequel. Can’t wait for book 2!

So far so good for my son. My son looses interest really fast if it doesn't have pics lol. But this book has had him reading every page. Highly recommend. Getting him the rest of the lineup after he is done with this book.

It's interactive, but a little hard for him to read before bed because it messes with his relaxation (the storylines excite him, so not really a complaint)!

There is a very cool website he is ready to navigate with the book.

My 9 year old loved the trapped in a video game series. And this series… even better and more clever. We have such fun reading this at night. It is engaging, interactive, and the fun even extends with special codes on a website unlocking extra content. Just all so well done. My son and I both have such fun with it. So much better then regular choose your own adventure books! Hope they write many more b

My grandson loved this book. He loves games so this was perfect.

Reading is not my grandson’s favorite thing to do. He enjoys video games, so I ordered the Lost In A Video Game Series. He ENJOYED all 5 of those books! We were excited to see the new book ESCAPE From A Video Game come out. He was excited to start reading as soon as he received it. I hope this is the beginning of a new series.

This book was so funny, that it took me ages to stop laughing when I died! I would recommend this book to anyone who likes making decisions and absolutely loves adventure and comic stuff together. Also keep track of all the endings when you die.
