I bought the 28" version of this sink about a month ago and it was finally installed last Friday, 4 days ago. It's under mounted on new granite. I have to say I'm impressed with the design, materials, and fabrication. Also, the 28" version seems like a great size for me. I could have gone larger but I didn't want to lose more real estate with the granite and this sink can hold the largest roasting pan I own.
Design - This is subjective for everyone but this sink is really sharp looking. It's deep at 10 inches. Add in the 3 cm thickness of my granite counter tops and you get an overall depth of 11 1/4 inches. That's something to think about for shorter people and kids. The sink this replaced was a Corian molded in double sink. That was just 9 inches deep. 2 1/4 inches doesn't sound like much but it creates a whole different feel to the sink.
Speaking of double sinks, I hated that thing. The wall in the middle of the two sink basins just ate up space and made each basin less useful. For me, a single basin sink is just so much more useful when it comes to washing big pots and pans or stacking up dishes after a dinner party.
The corners have just enough radius on them that you can easily clean the sink with your finger pushing on a sponge. But it looks very modern, not like the stainless sinks you had as a kid with big rounded corners and a big radius where the side walls meet the bottom. This has more of a square look to it with almost right angles where the sides meet. It's sharp looking. The finish is brushed rather than polished which should cut down on the visibility of scratches and keep it looking good as it ages. As shown in the photos for the Amazon listing, it also comes with a stainless steel rack that provides protection for the bottom of the sink. The rack comes with rubber feet for the bottom and rubber bumpers that install around the perimeter so the rack doesn't scratch the sink either. They also include a little bag of replacement rubber bumpers for the rack. There is liberal sound deadening material attached to 5 sides of the sink. The sink is totally dead acoustically. As in, water hitting it doesn't create any "drum" effect nor does setting down a pot or coffee cup. It's pretty much silent.
Materials - The 16 gauge stainless steel is heavy. The installer remarked about the weight when he first picked it up. Compared to the usual 18 gauge sinks you'll find at Home Depot this sink is heavier, more rigid and should resist dents a lot better. My personal advice is to steer clear of 18 gauge sinks. I didn't use the provided drain assembly because I have the sink hooked up to a garbage disposal which requires it's own proprietary drain unit. The sinks drain hole is standard size and the disposal unit went in without a hitch. But the provided drain assembly is also of high quality. And I'm not sure what material they used for sound deadening but it works really well.
Fabrication - The sink arrived in flawless condition. The finish inside the sink was perfect. No dents or dings or scratches. The sink itself came wrapped in a non woven fabric bag. Everything was plumb and square, nothing bent. It installed without a hitch.
As for the reviews that comment on scratches. Yeah even high quality stainless steel is gonna do that. While steel is hard, it's exactly the same hardness as your stainless steel silverware or pots and pans. They will scratch each other. A ceramic dish or cup is even harder than steel. More brittle, more fragile, but harder. Ceramic will scratch steel. You can be careful but I just accept the fact that any sink is going to scratch. It gains character with age.
As for the reviews that are lamenting water spots or rust spots, guess what? Stainless steel does that too. It has to do with your local water and it's hardness (mineral content) and acidity (pH). Chemistry will not be denied. As others have said, keep a bottle of Bar Keeper's Friend under the sink and give it a polish once a month. One bottle will probably last you 10 years.
And before you go running for Corian molded in sinks, let me tell you that's what I just ripped out. They are horrible. Ours was molded in white. Dump a cup of coffee, tomato sauce, coffee grounds, red wine, or certain fruits in the sink and you have instant staining that looks disgusting. That required scrubbing with a bleach based cleaner about 4 days per week to keep it from looking like a sink in a ghetto apartment. It was a big reason for my move to granite and stainless steel.
Want a granite sink? Expensive, extremely heavy requiring special installation, and the most labor intensive to maintain. No thanks.
I'm really happy with this sink. I can't really think of anything I'd change. Of all the materials out there, a good quality stainless sink is my favorite.
