Product Description
The Classic Sunflower or Mixed Seed Feeder with Ring Pull Advantage is a classic tube feeder designed for easy cleaning. Simply pull the ring to disassemble the feeder in seconds without tools. The 16-inch seed tube has a 1-pound birdseed capacity for fewer refills, and the bird feeder has six feeding ports to accommodate multiple birds at once. It works with a variety of seed types, including sunflower seed, mixed seed, peanut chunks, safflower seed, sunflower kernels and cracked corn. The ports protect the tube from squirrels, and the metal perches cannot be chewed by squirrels. For additional durability, the seed tube is made from UV-stabilized polycarbonate that resists discoloration over time. This feeder either can be suspended from its stainless steel bail wire or pole mounted. It measures 2-1/2 by 5-1/2 by 20-1/2 inches. Made in the USA.

Customers like the size of the wildlife feeder. They mention it's huge, holds a good amount of seed, and is large enough for species that like to tray-feed. I learned many years ago that no feeder I could find surpasses the Droll Yankee's. I love 'em. I got my first one this size as a gift from my mother 35 years ago. It's a tad discolored from exposure to sun and weather, but 100% functional. I bought 4 more same size and later 2 of the super large gallon size. Used them for the past 20- 30 years or so. This past winter we had so much snow and so many hungry birds, I felt the need for another and naturally it had to be a Droll Yankee tube feeder. In the past I had purchased other brands and styles of feeders. The only ones still with me are the Droll Yankee tube feeders. Need I say more about durability? And, the minor assembly that was required was a snap! No tools needed.
They have changed a teensie bit since my last purchase (in the 80s), and I was pleasantly surprised. Changes were for the better. (Added a baffle on the bottom to prevent unreachable seed from collecting and spoiling.) They retained the "armored" feeding ports, preventing squirrels from chewing and damaging the ports.
The birds love it. It holds about 2 quarts of seed. I mix my own - about 3/4 Black Oil Sunflower, the other 1/4 a mixture of Peanut chips and Safflower seed. (I use a separate special feeder for the Niger/Thistle seed for the finches, although sometimes I add a handful to my sunflower mixture) No wasted seed as there often is with some purchased mixtures. Here in SE Pennsylvania, I attract Chickadees, Titmice, Nuthatches, numerous varieties of Sparrows (Chipping, House, and others), Goldfinches, Carolina wrens, House finches, Purple finches, Cardinals, Blue jays, and more. Mourning doves and other larger birds including the Jays, Cardinals and even Crows fed on the dropped seeds. Juncos/Snowbirds feed on the ground seed in the winter, but they depart every summer. The gray squirrels got their share in the cold winter months, but in warmer weather are not interested. No matter how many squirrels feed, I have NEVER had one of them damage these Droll Yankee tube feeders in the slightest. They are very well armored against squirrel damage. I have even had the deer raiding the tube feeders. <grin> So I bought a bag of ear corn and put out about a dozen ears every evening in their path on the other side of my property and that seemed to satisfy them - and a few of the squirrels.
The company has maintained a quality product over many years. Surprisingly, this recent purchase is of the same quality as my 35 year old DY feeder. In the current market that has most companies reducing quality by the minute, I'm happy to say that this Droll Yankee product has not sunken to that level. Buy with confidence, but keep in mind, you will have to revise your will to include your Droll Yankee feeder. And, yes, I am confident it/they will last that long!
I can't speak for their newer designs, the ones with the colored metal parts, don't have any. I stuck with what I knew, this tube feeder with the Pewter colored metal parts. Very happy and so are the birds.
I originally gave a bad review for this feeder but it was my mistake. I had purchased 3 Droll Yankee feeders at the same time and I was talking about the 2.5lb capacity feeder with the wire cage as being the bad one. This feeder is awesome with the quick release cleaning system and I will definitely purchase more of these feeders.
Two months ago I wanted to buy another Onyx feeder to replace one of my older tube feeders and found the Droll Yankees A-6RP Ring Pull Classic Sunflower Feeder. This one gets 5 stars and 2 thumbs up! To clean this you just open the top and pull the ring on the metal rod. The metal bottom and all the ports just fall away from the tube. There is a clear plastic insert at the bottom of the tube that just slides out and the top handle with the cap for the tube is also removable. It is the easiest to clean feeder that I have ever seen. Just run a brush with soapy water through the tube. You can soak and scrub the metal ports separately if needed. Rinse well and in seconds everything is clean.
It is very easy to reassemble too. You start by inserting the metal ports into the uppermost holes. Make sure you line up the perches with the small holes below the port. Hold the ports in place with one hand and insert the metal rod (ring pull) into the center hole of the cross bar at the top that holds the handle and slide the rod down until it is just below the metal ports . That holds the top ports in place and you can now repeat that on the mid ports. After the mid ports are secure, replace the plastic bottom, lining up the slots in the side with the small holes on the side of the tube near the bottom. Next insert the metal bottom piece, again lining up the holes. Then insert the bottom metal ports so that the perches are also lined up with those holes. Slide the rod to the bottom of the tube and everything should be secure. Replace the bail for the lid into the cross bar at the top and if everything is dry fill with seeds. Once you do this a time or two it literally takes only a minute or two to reassemble
This feeder cost a little bit more than most feeders, it is not cute or pretty, but I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys feeding birds. Cleaning it is so easy and the birds will appreciate eating there instead of at a feeder that is all gunked up.
The Droll Yankees Onyx feeder is great but this one is even better. I cannot think of a single thing I do not like about this feeder, and they are made in the USA!
