Sofia Coppola’s ethereal debut feature, illuminating the interior lives of five sisters in 1970s suburban America
With this debut feature, Sofia Coppola announced her singular vision, exploring the aesthetics of femininity while illuminating the interior lives of young women.
An adaptation of Jeffrey Eugenides’s highly acclaimed first novel, The Virgin Suicides conjures the ineffable melancholy of teenage longing and ennui in its story of the suicides of the five Lisbon sisters, stifled by the rules of their overprotective religious parents—as told through the collective memory of a group of men who were boys at the time and still yearn to understand what happened.
Evoking its 1970s suburban setting through ethereal cinematography by Ed Lachman and an atmospheric score by Air, and featuring a magnetic performance by Kirsten Dunst, the film secured a place for its director in the landscape of American independent cinema and has become a coming-of-age touchstone.
Director-Approved Special Edition Features
- New 4K digital restoration
- Interviews with Coppola, Lachman, Dunst, actor Josh Hartnett, and others
- Making-of documentary featuring Sofia, Eleanor and Francis Ford Coppola, the cast and others

The newly restored 5.1 audio and video are stunning, and the supplemental material adds layers of depth to reconsider this still-controversial film.
At age 24, it is still topical, perhaps even more so in the advent of the brutality unleashed through social media.
Even though I did not read the book until after seeing this, it's great that it sticks close to the source material, only cutting away some minor things that don't detract from the original by any means. What I love most is how well it compliments the book, I can still separate the two but it's nice to have the movie to put you in the 70's time period set in. The soundtrack alone done by Air, gives it a whole extra layer most movies don't have. It's haunting and really is a defining aspect that would lose something had it been a more generic score.
With this release you get 4K, though I do not have the proper TV to utilize that it still noticeably improved, the colors and art direction have always stood out here and only has gotten better. The sound mixing is brilliant as before, especially with how much presence the Air score takes and other songs of the era play into the scenes.
Bonus features have all the old ones plus a few new short interviews. I would have liked to see a more complete retrospective with the entire cast, but at least having Sofia and Josh are interesting to watch. Her first short film was a nice addition as I never heard or seen it prior to this. There are a ton of promotional photos from the time if you just do a simple search that are just fantastic, would have loved to see a photo gallery of all of them. Otherwise what's here is good and hard to imagine what other features could have been added. The packaging is class too, I like the image they chose for the cover instead of focusing on Kirsten Dunst as the face of the film. Booklet insert has a short essay and general info, welcomed addition.
There's next to nothing negative I can say about this film, it may seem simple but it's a joy to watch even with the depressing matter of suicide at hand, it's able to pull you in especially when all the acting is good. No annoying characters or scenes that I dread upon new viewings. Having read and seen both I certainly love the book more for the added details, but it's a wonderful companion to that when you want to absorb the story and all this version has to offer.
